Do you and your doctor think you might be able to recover enough to no longer be considered eligible for SSI/SSDI? Not to discourage you, but it can be pretty tough to build up a solid roll and play professionally if you have health issues of a certain severity and aren't sufficiently treating them
Had certainly been the case for me wrt to mental illness, and I've known or seen quite a few people sabotage their careers or potential careers because they didn't manage their mental illness (or even physical) well enough. If you have bipolar disorder that's especially true. There were actually two guys that I know of with serious bipolar disorder on here a few years back who were right on the cusp of playing professionally. They were both decent enough players, but they both eventually spewed off their entire roll in a manic state

Many people who are eligible to receive SSI/SSDI are capable of performing
some level of work - they need to be able to make something like $1600/mo at a job in order to no longer qualify iirc. That's what the government considers to be "gainful employment." There are a lot of people receiving such benefits who can work in a limited capacity. If OP didn't currently have issues maintaining gainful employment due to a health condition, it's not super likely he would even be on SSI/SSDI in the first place
Quite frankly, I kind of just get the sense that you had a knee-jerk reaction to OP's statement because "muh welfare cheats" or some such. I don't know how else you would've so definitively come to that conclusion if you've actually read through this thread
