I'm doing the same thing as you at the moment, but I went as far down as 2NL, to really get a ego-boost. FWIW, I had almost the exact same hand happen to me two times, and both times it was a set. If you called, make a player note. If you folded, gg. I doubt these guys balances with any kind of draw, and even then you are not far ahead. The pot is just too small to risk your whole stack.

AA: I like your pre sizing and I would have just shoved OTF against an unknown.

JJ: Given your reads I'm not folding.

I think AA is closer than JJ. JJ i'd snap all day. AA ... i think i'd probably get it in (shove or fold, no poiint calling given stack sizes) but i think you'll see a set of 10s or Js a fair bit of the time. Hopefully he's a spaz and plays KK/QQ this way.

Very true. However, I'm liking my call less and less the more I think about it.

What he is doing this with that beats me: sets, random 2p, straight

What does he do it with that I beat: 99, TT, AK-AJ, 66, 55, A8s, complete bluffs.

I'm fairly sure he sized me up as not folding an overpair here and just went for max and I'm not sure he would have done it without the nuts or near nuts.

Dunno.

Still not playing well. A good day is usually followed by a few bad ones where I get so frustrated by getting a bad beat or two or no action, that I eventually start paying off the river bets of the lucky donks who suck out and just exaccerbate the problem.

Decided that seeing as everyone is making FR look so easy and less swingy that I would give that a go for a week or two and gets a sample of how i go there. Just booted up my first session and I'm already 2 BI down after 140 hands and still paying them off.

Example:-

The three villains to my right who all limp/call 7.5x are playing 40/7, 67/25, 47/7. Three deat set whales. Of course the donk flops two pair when I have him dominated and manage to flop top pair.

Well finished up after 2 sessions at 10NL FR.

Didn't post a profit which was disappointing but after being down 2.5 BI (see above) very quickly I managed to actually get my nose in front before a few awful beats smacked me back down.

However, I must say I was surprised I finished down when I had a look after the session because I felt I was playing pretty well once I settled in. It was only after I went back through some hands that I didn't realise I had been outdrawn a few more times where I had moved on to other tables and hadn't seen the final results of the hands while playing. I guess this is what PG1 is referring to with multi-tabling FR as those hands i didn't see didn't tilt me. A few hands annoyed me over the session but I managed to keep my head for the most part.

In terms of this challenge I think I will stick with this for a bit now. Results didn't go my way tonight but I felt I had a pretty good handle on it and there seems to be a lot more passive fish willing to donate money than in 6 max. I just need to refine my game to the FR format so any tips from you FR experts on FR strat will be appreciated.

So here's my short term goal: Play 10NL 6 max for 15,000 hands and take a stocktake at that time. For me this should be about 2 weeks play. If I am continuing to lose steadily I might take a break for a period. If I feel I am making some progress I will continue with this format and stake through until December 31 at which point I'll take another stock take and then consider some further goals in the new year.

Welcome to the sleepy world of FR! I definitely think it will suit your game – once you get used to the difference in the way it plays compared to 6 max you’ll be fine. I think the main thing is just to slightly raise your hand requirements in terms of the hands you want to play big pots with – generally villains will have stronger hands, so you need to as well.

I think pre at 10nl, you can get by with only getting it in with AA and KK (obviously villain dependent – sometimes 1010 is fine). I tend to flat quite a lot with AK/QQ just to pot control and only play a big pot when I really want to. I’ve folded KK a number of times pre and been happy about it every time.

And post flop, if in doubt, fold. Almost every time I’ve stacked off slightly light, when I’ve known really that I could have found a fold, I’ve lost – it’s rare that someone will run a big bluff and you can hero it with one pair. There’s always a better spot, and you can totally avoid marginal situations and still do really well. Obviously some villains still bluff, but generally when they say they have it, they have it. Equally I think the scope is there for you to bluff in the right spots, because everyone is terrified you have a set (but again, no need to push this too much at 10nl). In general I tend to try to pot control quite a bit with decent made hands, and keep it as low variance as possible. Obviously you can’t avoid getting stacked sometimes but generally small(ish) ball will be successful and soon someone will pay your monster because the fish don’t adjust properly and they massively overvalue their hands, so when you do hit a set there’s a chance you’ll get paid.

And the thing to remember is that over a period of TWO THOUSAND HANDS you can break even across all your tables and then stack someone once with a set, and you’ll still have a very nice 5bb winrate. Think how long a period 2k hands is. Stay patient and don’t try to play big pots every chance you get – keep it small and over the long course of things, playing well, enough spots will go your way that you’ll come out with a profit.

As for the hands you posted above:

Hand 1 KQ – I think I could potentially get away from. There are no draws for him to do this with, and he can have all sets/2pairs and even AK/AA here. Unless you have a good read, these types of fish don’t generally spaz often enough with a hand you beat for you to call here.

Hand 2 – AQ – bigger on the turn (b/f), otherwise nh.

Hand 3 – I think river is a reasonably +EV shove rather than c/f, though you won’t always be ahead by any means when called.

Hand 4 – 73 – NH.

Hand 5 – K3 before checking the spoiler I was thinking go bigger on the river, even overbet shove. This is one of those hands where he can have a really big hand (straight) that he might call any betsize with. It can be insanely profitable to massively overbet shove in some of these types of spots.

Hand 6 – K10 – NH

Hand 7 – KQ – a bit bigger on the turn, and depending on villain I’m probably value betting the river.

Hand 8 – AJ – NH

Hand 9 – AK unless he’s a total drooler I hate the flop raise. Our hand isn’t all that good here so this is one I’m looking to keep the pot smaller (though I appreciate he’s ½ stacked so it’s harder to do).

Hand 10 – AK – fair enough if he’s been 3betting a lot, otherwise I flat pre.

Hand 11 – QQ – again I flat pre unless the guy is particularly agro.

As usual, it depends. Most decent regs are too smart to pay you off when you flop a set, but it's def still worth set mining (assuming you're 100bb+ deep) agains any remotely fishy player or a nit who might get married to a premium. i'm more likely to play them ip and multiway, but tbh i'll at least call to see a flop most of the time. IP especially you'll find you can often take the pot because PFR doesn't cbet - e.g. you have 44, flop 965ss, UTG checks, you bet, he folds. People are really scared of sets on boards like that and will give u credit. In the blinds, depending on the villain i'll sometimes 3bet a pp, sometimes call, sometimes fold (esp vs agro shorties).

In EP i tend to just bin 77 and below unless there's a fish somewhere who will pay me if i hit. if i think i'll get 3bet alot i'll def just fold pre.

In MP and LP i'm raising all PPs.

Any more specific scenarios you've got in mind?

Thanks mate.

No, nothing specific. Just looking for thoughts on what you dump early (22-77) and whether you are always calling, ever 3betting from blinds etc etc.

In 6 max I always bet utg (even 22) but I did dump quite a few small PPs from EP last night and also folded some in the blinds when I didn't think set mining was profitable in the particular situation.

Are you ever limping small PPs from EP/MP if you expect you will get a string of callers behind you?

Ok then - 2 sessions approximately 1 hour each.

I won't post graphs every day as it is kind of short sighted, results oriented and pointless, but I'll do it today and then every few days or week from this point.

Started like a house on fire, gradually dwindled it away and then stacked off and had myself frustrated that it seemed to be going like so many other sessions where not much is happening and when I finally get it all in, I'm on the wrong side of it. However, I plugged away with patience, folded a few spots where I might not in previous sessions and then got a nice running going towards the back end of the second session.

I'm pretty confident that with a little discipline and patience I can start working the graph in the right direction at the FR tables. Only early I know but impressions are that there is not the same intensity and pressure being applied as 6 max so if you just wait for some good spots and target the right villains then it is very beatable.

FR graph over the first 2 days:-

HANDS

HAND 1

Villain is playing 7/4 over 56 hands so while the sample is small I expect his range to be strong when he opens. I flop TPTK and expect him to cbet this board 100% of the time. Outside of AA I feel like I'm ahead of everything else here.... I beat PP KK and below (unless he has 66, 77 which he may or may not play from EP) and I don't see any two pair combos in his range.

Any point raising flop at this stage? As played, I call and he checks to me on the turn where I fire 1/2 psb for value and then get raised which takes me back. Turn move? As played - river?

Villain playing 23/3 over 35 hands. I flat IP to take a flop and flop top set - a spot I often get no value from when I bet/raise. Just call flop on this occassion and raise turn hoping he has overpair he can't fold.

I haven't looked at any spoilers so i'll probably get all these wrong!

Hand 1 - i don't raise at any stage. the turn is gross, it's basically AK and AA mostly, but i can't fold given AK is more likely. I might even check back turn to induce him to call the river when he has KK/QQ.

Hand 2 - i raise the flop because of the various draws. Otherwise NH.

Hand 3 - NH

Hand 4 - NH

Hand 5 - fold pre - you have no odds to setmine and your hand is cr@p compared to his range. As played i'd possibly raise the flop given he's never folding AA/KK etc.

Hand 6 - NH

Hand 7 - NH, can't possibly fold to the flop raise given stack sizes.

December goals ->

* Play FR for entire month. Aim for 30,000 hands. At least 15,000 at 10NL and re-assess at that point.
* Stay calm, stay patient, articulate thoughts before acting.
* No snap PF shoves or river calls. Stop, think, act.......post HHs for review if necessary.
* Read another poker book.
* Release $50 PS Stellar bonus before Dec 31. Currently on 2879/5000.

First session for December didn't go so well. Only played 6 pots bigger then $1 but the bigger ones didn't fall my way. Don't think I could have done too much different though.

I guess I'm only ever losing to TT here as I don't see KK when he just flats in BB multiway. He could have put me on a steal when I bet from the Btn when checked to and got funky with AK, KT, JQ. Anyone ever finding a fold when he jams?

Only hand I'm worried about here is KK but how often is he flatting OOP here PF? When he calls flop AK is a large part of his range, although I have 2 aces. Not really sure what flush draw he could have seeing as I hold As.

Take a multi way flop on the Btn with a nice hand and flop a big draw which comes in on the turn. Get a great price to call on the flop and decide to just flat turn as well as both cbets seem weakish to this point and having the nuts I don't want to lose him. In hindsight a shove on the turn probably gets called.

That'll do for today. Always seems to have this type of session straight after I post something along the lines of "I think I'm going well".

Since the above post the same villain has stacked me twice when my overpair has been all in on the flop and he's put it in on a flush draw both times and got there.

I know you have your share of coolers and bad beats, but I just would like a period of a few days or a week at least where I can string winnings days together. Not always a day of bad beats straight after I have a positive day and feel like my game is in order.

Graph since switching to FR.

Hand 1 - i could never fold the set there, just a cooler imo.

Hand 2 - NH

Hand 3 - difficult one because when they bet smallish it's normally weak and they fold when you raise, so i don't hate a call on the turn. He had close to the top of his range, and i'm surprised he played it that way and didd't go bigger on the turn.

Cheers mate.

I'm enjoying the switch to FR. I'm still a bit up and down and about break even at the moment (only about 4500 hands) but feel I can do alright here. I'm getting paid off in a few more spots I think but need to get better at assessing the relative strength of my own hands as I'm still paying off some bets I probably shouldn't.

Going to put in 2 solid weeks here and will then post the graphs and perhaps some stats for you leak bust. Will try to pick out some tough hands in the meantime for feedback.

Would love some thoughts on whether you are calling this river bet and your thought processes right through out the hand.

I have no more than a handful of hands on this player and this is the first time he has entered a pot, raising from EP. With little info I decide to take a flop and assess as the hand plays out.

When he check/calls flop I think AK and perhaps PPs 77-99. I expect him to bet TT+ and sets.

I decide to check turn (rightly or wrongly) thinking I'll call or bet myself on the river when checked to. When he jams river is anyone ever calling here? JJ & 99 got there, as did AKss. Is he ever doing this with a hand I beat?

Definite fold. Probably AKss (even A10ss might have to be considered as an unknown). Dont think he spazz out with JJ or 99 like that.

AA,KK dont add up on flop/turn betting but beat you anyway.
QQ doesn't add up on flop/turn and you only chop with.
10 10 unlikey.
99 JJ possibly but does he spazz out with them?
AKss or A10ss nut hands trying a strange shove hoping you call with QQ,JJ,99 etc.

Whatever villain has his line is dreadful, but you're very likely beaten so its an easy fold. I'd bet/fold the turn and check back alot of rivers tho, i think it makes it easier to establish where u are in the hand and gets max value from worse
