Growing Up, Making It Happen - Road to Midstakes Growing Up, Making It Happen - Road to Midstakes

Hey guys. I'm Cam, i'm 19 years old from the UK, a 2nd year Uni student and this is my background

I've been actively contributing on this forum for awhile now, and been playing poker for about 2 years. Over that time, i've ran up and busted numerous rolls because of my severe tilt problems and lack of any self control. Within the last year i've busted rolls of over 1.5k 4 times within a few hours playing on lifetilt at stakes way higher than my BR or abilities allowed.

I've played most of my hands at 100NL, on Party Poker and FTP, and have been a marginal winner over a medium sample (80-90k hands). After busting a roll at the start of summer 2010 i seeked out staking, and given my knowledge for the game and reasonable results i managed to get 3 staking deals within 4 or 5 months. Unfortunately, i was in no mindset to play poker, i'd recently ended a long term relationship with my then girlfriend whom i was pretty serious about, and was struggling for direction in my life with my apathetic attitude to anything causing me to struggle to pass my first year of Uni. As a result i under performed during all these staking deals, losing money, playing badly, tilting, and generally losing all faith and confidence in my poker ability.

This all came to a head around 3 months ago when i came back after a drunken night out with friends and dumped 1.4k in a couple of hours playing 100NL blind drunk. When i came to i could barely remember any of it happening, and until now had been self banned from Poker, live or online. I did alot of soul searching in the future weeks, spoke to the people who's opinion i respected, some of them friends from this site, and started to get my act together. I feel better about my life, more motivated, more committed to stop this under achieving and i am determined to make my poker aspirations work. I've been posting a ton of strat over the last couple of months, taking in people's points, firing out my own ideas, and as a result i think i have a sharp analytical mind when it comes to most poker problems, and resultantly believe i am a difficult opponent to face over the internet felt. And so....

The Goal

I'm going to be playing 50NL HU and 25NL 6max until i've worked my roll upto a sufficient size for me to start playing 100NL 6max again. Whether im going to continue playing HU at this point i'm unsure. The plan is to be playing at least 1/2 by Summer of 2011, hopefully 2/4 by the end of the year and i'm hoping with a little encouragement from you guys, some rungood from Howard (ship it) and some serious work on my game in between, i can get there.

Ive also made a promise to myself to improve my lifestyle, my work ethic and my all around contribution as a person to friends and family around me. I'll be touching a little on this at the right times

So for now, all that's left to say is, i hope you enjoy the thread over the next few months, and for reading that painstakingly boring opening i come bearing gifts for you all.

Day 1 Update

I ran reasonably well to start today, unfortunate how many 50NLHU regs seem to sit out after only a few hands of play once you've 3bet or shown you don't limp buttons lol. Not sure how they expect to progress up the limits without playing other regs but whatever

Final day tally : +$255.95

Am good cheers, just been chilling without Poker for a while, but starting from the beginning of January I've been trying to make Supernova this year, which will be pretty hard considering my track record of how much I do actually grind, but we'll see, I'm already well behind pace already (standard for me).

I also need a new headset, so if you order it online, please to be shipping me the link .

Good luck!

turn sizing is really bad, i decided to c/c river cos he was the kinda guy that'd snap check behind AQ/KQ so i figured he has enough missed draws aswell to spaz because my turn bet was so small. realistically, i should be c/f or jamming for value. vs this guy, it was an easy c/f

some rungood

see you posting in uNL, and I just wanted to say that there are a handful of posters who I really respect as far contribution goes and you are one of them. Thanks to that forum I've turned my game into a solid one and I've made about $1500 in the last two weeks grinding out nl25. My goal thread:

http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/17...88/index2.html

My story is kind of similar to yours...negative variance...tilt...cash out/bust stop playing, rinse/repeat.

You sound a lot like me when I was your age (I'm now close to 25). Smart, in college, but somewhat apathetic. Take it from me, and many of my now graduate friends...everyone feels like you do at some point in college. We realize that it isn't a guaranteed stepping stone to our dreams, or that what we learn really matters at all. I think at the end of the day the big point of college is that you can stick to a goal and achieve it. It's not really about the major or whatever...just that you can apply yourself to a long term goal and have something to show for it. Same concept as in poker.

If I can offer one piece of advice it's to get involved in some sort of club on campus. I was on the rowing team for four years in college and it was the best decision I made period. Sport is hard as hell, but it gave me purpose and some of the best friendships a guy can ask for. Having something to do so you are not thinking about school or poker will be good for you. The sense of camaraderie with a group is invaluable.

TLDR: Been where you have been. Don't take school too seriously, just work through it to show that your can. Good luck with long run +ev poker.
