Oceanside

Took a trip down to check out the situation at some of the SoCal card rooms with my buddy Cleo. All of the places we went have moved the majority of gaming operations out into tents with more ventilation. The lists were very long Friday night so we jumped around a little bit in LA before going an hour south to Oceans Eleven. Games were decent, weather hasn't gotten too cold there yet so it wasn't bad playing outside.

Online grind is back going in the right direction for now. Up about 5 buy ins at 50NL. The player pool is fairly static so my compiled reads are becoming useful in marginal spots.

All of the casinos on the Strip have officially reopened, it is going to be a very challenging economic outlook for the city going forward.

Cheers! Can't beat a good hike or run in one of our parks. Thanks for complementing my art. Live scene has been good, plexi and masks are way better than nothing at all.

North End Sign

Sunset Park

Got to hit up Bugsy & Meyers, a brand new restaurant at Flamingo on a first date with a girl I met on FB dating. She seemed pretty cool, the steak was excellent.

I've been sweating the Polk vs KidPoker high stakes battle. I don't really care who wins, I just think it's good for the poker world to see some 6 fig pots.

"High Stakes Poker" is also rebooting which was my all time fav poker show. I loved watching Durrrr 3bet/4bet relentlessly and Doyle nit it up. One of the reasons I have stuck to cash games all these years.

NYNY

Got in a short hike in an area I haven't explored much on northwest side of the valley.

50NL going pretty smooth lately, as of today I am half a buy-in from hitting my 20 buy-in goal. I feel like I am pretty sharp and playing well for the most part.

Hospitalizations are setting records in NV so I expect some restrictions to be reimposed.

December is drawing to a close a very tumultuous year. There is hope on the horizon with the first approved vaccine beginning to be administered in the USA. As tough as this year has been for a lot of people, I am cognizant that there are many much worse scenarios that could unfold in the next couple of decades. So I think it is super important to remember all of the luxuries we take for granted an prepare ourselves to adapt and to be resilient in hard times.

I've been getting in decent volume online. Crossed the threshhold of 20 buy-ins at 50 NL then promptly lost back 10 buy-ins but managed to grind it back in not too much time. It's a good remind of how swingy this game is. Now I'm mixing in 100 NL tables and my next target is $2k or roughly 20buy-ins but perhaps a bit more because I'll still be mixing 50 NL. I've been soaking up a lot of strat content and I feel my game is getting sharper and I am staying more engaged during my sessions. If I stick at it, I think I can grind up to 200 NL and 500 NL within the next year.

We recently lost key community member Tony Hsieh, RIP. I respect how he used his fortune and influence to invest in reimagining and redeveloping DTLV.

I have a tradition of setting goals at the beginning of each year. I rarely reach them all but it's helpful to have an ideal to strive toward.

Happy New Year!

It was a crazy year for sure, lot's of tragedy and hardship worldwide. But I think it is better to focus on the positives and the things we can control.

In 2021 my trajectory will be mostly the same as the last few years, I'll post my updated goals in the next post.

Cheers to another fresh start, don't squander it!

White Rock Loop (photo credit bikeking19)

We had a weather system blow through LV. First significant precipitation in months, got a good 4 inch blanket in the surrounding mountains. Hiked white rock loop for the first time with Cleo and Bikeking19. Nice easy 7 miles.

I signed up for a 100k race in early May, gunna train a ton to make sure I'm ready.

I'm about halfway through this 20 BI 100 NL challenge. Pretty swingy but should be able to get it done sooner or later.

You better start running a lot more if you're really going to do a 100k in May. Have you run any marathons before? I don't think ultra distance running is good for the human body in any way. Way too much stress put on your organs and bones and connective tissue. I would reconsider running the 100k. I ran cross country in high school and ran a couple of marathons as an adult. Take it easy in my opinion.

I appreciate the concern, I'm not very fast but I think I naturally have more endurance. I understand ultras can be grueling and tough on the body for sure. I've got 4 marathons under my belt. 62 miles seems like just the right step before I attempt a 100 miler, which is my ultimate running goal. I do need to beef up my long runs, gunna build up to 40 miler in early April as my longest training run then taper off.

I'm a nit, I already paid so I can't back out!

You got this!

I tried 100m in Feb. Tripped over a tree stump carrying an ice chest to camp 10 min before the start. At 22 miles my ankle was done. Tried to tape it, but I was too much of a wuss to keep going.

I did realize I was not ready for 100m, tho. Did not put in enough miles over the winter. Over estimated my willingness to train in the cold and wind. Also, it's really flat where I live. The hills would have got me, eventually. I also realized my running style is very much a shuffle. That doesn't work on a course with a lot of free roots.

Anyway, I signed up for an easier course in April. Didn't want the training I did do, to go to waste. Also, a more realistic 100k. I'm 47 and considerably bigger than you. If I had to bet on one of us to finish, my money would be on you.

Good luck and I appreciate the content you provide.

Slab City Skate Park

Spent a few days in SoCal with Cleo. Played a little poker in LA and SD, hit up some beaches and stopped by a cool spot near Salton Sea called Slab City. Fun trip over all.

Vegas tourists have started to return in force, it has been very busy here every weekend for the past month.

Resorts World is on track to open this summer, with all the poker rooms closing it will be good to have a new one open up.

I salute you for the 100m attempt. There is always that element of unexpected set backs that are inherent in running. But just toeing the line takes big cajones, respect.

I remember running a half marathon out in the Red Rock area 4 years ago and I stumbled over rocks on the trail at least 3 times, fortunately didn't face plant, but came close. It is weird having to focus on picking up my feet higher since I'm used to training predominantly on sidewalks.

GL with your 100k, you got this!

Closing in on my 100k race on May 8th. Got in a couple long training runs, 24.5 and 33 miles. The first one kicked my ass, didn't quite drink enough and got dehydrated, leg cramps and nausea, the sun was getting to me. I felt a lot better on the 33 mile run, drank enough and started eating some energy gels every 3 miles during the second half, those kept me from bonking. My knee hurt a little in the last 3 miles but kept a good pace.

I am going get in one more tough training block with back to back long runs. Gunna shoot for a 28 and a 12 miler on consecutive days which will be a little less impact than running 40 miles in a day but still give me some experience running on tired legs. Then I'll have 2 weeks to taper and ease back a bit and let the body absorb and adapt.

Poker has been pretty meh, just fell into the negative for the year, was negative in the first part of last year as well. About 10% behind on my volume goal so just gotta keep truckin and try to catch up. Looks like no WSOP again this summer so I won't feel obligated to stay in LV and will probably look to travel somewhere like Seattle or Tampa.

I completed one of my most intricate paintings since the big cabinet doors I painted in lockdown. I've got a lot more geometric ideas to keep me busy.

Wondering how you feel after those long runs, aside from exhausted? Exhilarated? Relieved? I’ve never run more than ten miles, but even after running a few miles these days, I feel pretty dam good. GL with the 100k.

Very interesting thread.
I spent like 30 minutes going through the first 15 pages or so.

Maybe you could ask the mods to update the 1st post with an overview of your story or something?
Would be very interesting to see how you did without having to scroll through 150 pages.

I'm assuming you actually moved to Vegas?
How long did that take you?
Are you still living there now?

Also, why do you want to date 6 girls in a year?
Seems like a weird goal to me, so I'm interested.

I usually feel pretty good, great way to relieve stress and spend time contemplating. I definitely feel euphoric with the boost of dopamine especially on runs over 6 miles or so. I think the best I ever felt was after my marathon in Sedona, a combination of the amazing setting and accomplishing a goal I felt elated. I also feel depressed if I go a few days without running so it is a relatively healthy addiction. Thanks!

The thread has become rather lengthy, we are coming up on a decade since it's inception.

It took me about a year before I initially moved out to LV in 2012. I spent about 90% of my time out here and some time in SF Bay Area, LA and a 3 month stint in Atlantic City. I've been back in LV since last June when the Strip reopened.

This is just kind of a log of my activities and striving toward my goals. I don't think there is much value to reading the whole thing. Just drop by for the latest updates, which I plan to do roughly every month or so.

Dating for me is usually short term relationships, my lifestyle is not really conducive to long term relationships. Whether it's one date a few dates or sometimes things last a year or 2. I'm not really looking to start a family or get married anytime soon.

The newest poker room coming to Vegas this year

Race day is tomorrow. I got in my last training block, had a little pain in the tendons on the outside of my right leg, starting at mile 20, pushed for another 7 miles through it. Cut back the second day run to a slow 2 miles. It feels mostly better but it could reemerge during the race. I figure worst comes to worst I hike it out the rest of the way.

Anticipating a nice sunny day, projected high of 88. Will be a fun day/ evening of exploring lots of trails I've never seen. I'll be sure to get some clips to share.

Grinded back to 16 out of 20 Buy ins for my 100 NL goal, pretty happy with my play, staying in my A and B game for the most part.
