Hard to know where to start after so long without updating, but here's a couple of photos from the Koh Samui comedy show back in January:
Was so sick to get paid while being flown out and given free accommodation in a 5 star resort to tell some jokes to 150 expats living on a Thai Island. One of the highlights of 2023 so far for sure.
Any of my Russian lurkers Viktor Komarov fans?
Shortly after spending a few days on an Island Paradise it was off to Cambodia for a month to grind at Nagaworld
I grinded there for 4 weeks and was pretty disappointed with the place as a whole. The rake is MUCH higher than in Scotland. $15 cap over $300 on the 1/3 and $20 cap over $400 on the 2/5.
There was also a $5 tax to run it twice and I just generally didn't like how lenient the floor was towards string betting and players talking in foreign languages at the table. There is also no betting line on the table, and there was one very annoying instance where I checked to a player on the river and he pushed all of his chips into the middle of the table holding on to them as his arm was fully extended all the way out. As I picked up a chip to throw in the call he pulled it all back and said "check." I called the floor and they said it wasn't binding because he didn't release his grip on the stack. They didn't even hold him to a minimum bet so I could reopen the action. Very dumb.
I definitely did appreciate seeing higher stakes games running at times (As high as 20/40 with lots of $80 straddles) but Naga is not cardroom I am in a hurry to go back to, even if it's one of the few options in my favorite region of the world. Still met some great people in Cambodia. So shoutout to BigBananas, OpticAdam, PollardPoker, zLasVegas, Andy, Andreas, Jorden, Dwayne (The Gilf Hunter) and all the other people that were out there playing cards when I was.
I did also manage to do a few stand-up shows while I was there!
After that I went to Laos for a week
First time visiting the place and I loved it, really chill country that's worth visiting if you love nature and want to see what Thailand was like 40 years ago.
I went to Vang Vieng and did a lot of psychedelics. Just me in a quiet bar with sick mountain views and a happy menu.
After that it was back to Thailand. It was then I had a mental breakdown, where I had to cancel plans to go to Vegas and just fly back to Glasgow, where I am now.
--------------
life in Glasgow is pretty good right now. I'm still doing stand-up and I'm balancing my time between grinding online and live poker well. I'm also very happy with my living situation. My flatmate is a powerlifting brain surgeon (Total Gigachad!) who I get on very well with. I took a 3 month break/detox from social media when I got back home. It was extremely therapeutic, but saying that, I have recently come to the realization that it would be for the benefit of my comedy pursuits to be a completely social media whore.
The unfortunate reality of making it as a stand-up in 2023 is that it is not about who is the best joke writer or onstage performer (Not that I'm suggesting I'm currently great at either) but it's really about who can make make the most watched 20 second tiktok videos. It's the people with the social media following that are given preference over those that are making no effort in that domain every single time. I can't really fault promoters, because they're just trying to make money and obviously the guy who can plug the ticket link to their 50 thousand instagram followers is more likely going to help them sell out the show, but it does make this craft feel a lot less like a "meritocracy" than it was years ago.
I will start making tiktok content in July, along with being a bit more active on Instagram and twitter as well. I am also thinking about streaming poker on twitch, so let me know if any of you guys might be interested in that.
I promise it won't be another 6+ months before my next update
