I was living devilish. Back in 2020 the pandemic nearly killed me. I caught the bug and it wasn't the airborne kind. It was in my mind. It's all good though. Incoming cringe new age philosophy speak: I had to lose myself in order to find myself. So that's what I did. Can't go into detail about that year just yet. Maybe never. Some things Bobby Peru just has to take to the grave with him.

At the start of 2021, I was still unsure of what direction I was headed. So near the end of January I ate 2g of psilocybin mushrooms and had an epiphany: I shall dedicate my life to poker. Up to that point, poker wasn't the only thing in my life that I tried to master but it was the only craft that I returned to time and time again since I first fell in love with the game watching John Juanda beat some old geezer in Tunica on ESPN Thanksgiving 2002. Before the hole cams. I'm an OG for real for real.

So around middle of Feb of 2021 I started grinding. Started slow at first just playing 10blitz on ACR and ****ing around on StarsPA. Played a $20 10k and shipped it for $1k. Ran up another $800 that night playing ppl HU and 3 and 4 max and said okay, I got a roll now I'm going to grind 50nl for a month like an actual pro and see what happens. Crushed it in March for 10bb/100 but then regression to the mean hit me. Kind of broke even for April and May and wasn't sure if I was even any good so I decided to start shopping for a CFP.

Ended up talking to the head honcho of a brand new start up called Nachos Poker. After talking with Patrick for an hour I just knew in my gut that this was the one. Best decision of my poker career. Wish I would've done it sooner but everything comes in due time. So I spent June learning and applying the strategy and in July I was officially on stake and part of the team. I spent the first 3 months going through small ups and big downs. I just couldn't seem to put it all together. After a decent September I was ready to shot 100nl in October and that whole month I fully popped off and ran like a god. November paled in comparison but it was still good enough to start shotting 200nl in December.

With the holidays approaching and with Mrs. Peru and the baby Peru's to look after I took a sizable profit split and was excited to end the year on a high note. The gods had other plans. I lost 30 stacks that month. With the cash out it felt like I lost 60 stacks. 2021 ended with a thud but I was determined to right the ship and take all that I learned that year and run it back in the new year.

My poor mindset and lack of professionalism were my biggest setbacks last year so my main focus for 2022 is to bring my A game for every day, every session, every hour, every hand etc...I'm pretty confident that when I'm in my zone I'm at minimum a 6evbb/100 winner so my goal is to cultivate that zone at all times and to stay in it for as long as possible and pump out that quality volume. January started back licking my wounds at 50nl but ended with shottaking 200nl. February I played mostly 200nl with 100nl mixed in to fill tables. 70% of my volume for March has been 200nl and I can now confidently say that after a shaky start I have stuck the landing. I've always felt like 200nl is the entry point into the league. Like being drafted and now you're playing out your rookie contract in hopes of landing a life changing deal. And now 12 months later, here I am and I'm ready to show and prove that I belong.

I'm making this now because during the many and many downswings and setbacks that I've experienced throughout this first year I would read countless poker blogs by the greats of the game for inspiration. It is my hope that one day this thread will serve to inspire another up and coming poker player on there journey through the chaos.

My main goals are to just play A game and be in that endboss mentality 24/7. OTB sht. Secondary goals are to play 1knl by years end and to go to my first WSOP this summer. Also need to get back on the fitness and diet grind. I crash and burn with this often. Let's rock.

The game is the game my friends.

Always.

Go, go, go! Gl.

There was an older Asian male poker player in our room a while back who would always say in his thick accent, "game is game." I wonder where that expression came from.

Hey man,

I just logged into 2+2 for the first time in years and your post was the first thing I saw! I think I'm in a similar spot you were in at the end of 2020/early 2021 - I played poker full time for years back in the early 2000s, online and live. After Black Friday, I began playing less and less (as my opportunities to play live became fewer and further between..).

Anyhow, I often get the itch to return to grinding - I've recently dusted off my old workbooks and notebooks and am looking to get back into grinding micros and SnGs to rebuild my bankroll. Do you recommend the sites you mentioned in your OP? I was playing a good bit on Bovada years ago, but have no idea where the decent rooms are nowadays (and am also in a state in the South, so I don't have access to all the rooms people in other states might).

Currently looking for recs on decent rooms! ACR, Bovada, etc?

Thanks!

Dumbo! Not sure where he got it from but it was a popular saying in The Wire.

Hey man! Means a lot to read this words thank you so much. Bovada is still a good room to play and one of the softest around. I highly recommend. ACR is usually tougher but not sure about SNGs. GL bro!

While "the game" was referenced quite regularly on the show, I'm willing to bet that scene may have been the only time on the show that particular phrase was used, in the way only Brother Mouzone could. I'm feeling overdue for a re-watch of the show, but that would only cut into my volume even further, lol.

Good luck on 40K hands. Seems like a healthy amount. I'm still struggling with some breakeven. I was grinding back up after my 30BI downswing only to hit another 20BI downswing. I'm feeling overdue for one of those can't miss stretches that even the fish have. I have gotten some coaching recently and sort of wished I had sooner. I don't think I put in the volume for a CFP to make much sense for me (15 to 20K for a good month) but if I can get to where I'm a reasonable winner at 100/200 I'll be happy.

Other references that aren't exact. "The game done changed" "The game the same only got more fierce is all" "It's all in the game" etc.

Ignition has better bonuses than Bovada from what I understand. I get a free $535 monthly milly bonus ticket offer every month for making a deposit. Bovada doesn't offer that.

I'll show you mines if you show me yours. But only through DM. Pool too small and regs too good to be sharing too much info publicly.

Thought of a question.
What would you say your biggest improvements were that you made as a player after completing your CFP?
Even just 2 or 3 things if you don’t mind getting a bit specific.

Been trying to figure out my biggest couple leaks lately and am curious about a fellow OG, as there was lots of flawed old school poker theory we probably both had to violently kick out the door.

I'd say my biggest improvement was in learning how to exploit and win more vs recs and learning which spots are over/underbluffed, overcalled, overfolded etc etc. This leads to defending more but defending better if you get what I mean.
