Haha thanks, pretty good timing for shot taking I guess.

Not anything that could earn a living outside of HUSNGs but there are some super soft low-mid stakes stuff that run on Ignition. The triple ups in particular, despite the ridiculous rake are absolutely crushable for double digit ROIs up through at least the $15s but 4 table cap makes them an MTT volume filler more than a real grind.

Pretty sure I used up all of my run good. Just bricked $500 worth of tourneys in about 3 hours...Oh well, I guess I'm off to bed early.

A couple odd days of poker since last Sunday. Was running rather atrocious while playing sub-optimal as well. Found myself trying to "win" the tournament in the early/mid stages focusing more on building a stack than stack preservation. Combined with running rather terrible, led to bricking 20 straight tournaments at a significantly higher ABI than previously ($25 compared to the old $6).

Re-focused a bit in last nights session and managed a 4th in the $22 4k Gtd and 16th in the $10 10k Gtd. Nothing to get excited about from a $$ perspective (well fourth was $400ish), however, it felt good to have my focus back and have a session that wasn't just brickorama. Had a couple other small min-cashes as well.

Moving forward, I think I'll be focusing the majority of my play on Ignition as the games play significantly differently between Ignition and ACR and it's tough to adjust between the sites during a session.

I'm going to play a schedule that looks something like the below in the evenings that I'm available to play (all times CST).

6:15 $11 5k
7:00 $55 25k
7:30 $5.50 2k
7:45 $11 8-10k
8:00 $22 4-5k
8:15 $55 8-10k
8:30 $3.30 1k Turbo
8:45 $22 4-5k
9:15 $11 3-5k Turbo
9:30 $7.70 1k Turbo KO
10:00 $33 3k Turbo

Pretty simple, straightforward. I usually don't start my sessions until 7:30-8:30 PM so some tourneys will be skipped if I'm buying in for less than 25bb initially. May reg a bit later into the evening as well. I also include most of the $10 3 table SNG's that launch during this time.

I'm withdrawing about $12k of the score I managed earlier. May redeploy some of those funds to Global or ACR but haven't decided yet, just back to enjoying the grind for enjoyments sake.

Hope everyone had a great Easter and is crushing it if you're playing today!

Monthly Conclusion Update:

Well...not a ton to say I guess. My plan for April is pretty well solidified in the previous thread.

BI graph for the month:

SNG volume was negligible if any.

MTTs Played: 108
Total Buy-In: $1,564.80
Rake: $138.05
Winnings: $16,785.26
Net: $15,220.46

972.7% ROI month. Seems acceptable to me. /end thread

For real though, obviously ran incredible this month with some well timed plays (15.2 evbb/100 and 19.9 bb/100). I have a long ways to go to really become a crusher though.

I was watching some old (mid 2017) Jeremy Menard vids on RIO yesterday and he said something that kinda struck home. I'm paraphrasing and probably butchering things but:
Quote:
low-mid stakes regs rely a lot on their fundamentals and but have to flip and run well in order to generate a profit in the short-term. High stakes regs have developed their games much more distinctly into more profitable spots by leveraging their stacks more often post flop. They find themselves in less 15-25bb spots and in more 30-50bb spots deep in MTTs.
Paraphrasing and drawing summaries at the same time but what Jeremy said there is really true. I'm no crusher, but I certainly beat these games. I could probably beat them much better if I didn't just play standard ABC and was capable of recognizing good spots to barrel off and good spots to just check fold.

April Goals:
1.) 100 games minimum (that's like 10 days of play for me)
2.) Review 1 full MTT from March each week (FT required)
3.) Don't play any games over $55 buy-in (already blew this playing a $82 last night but NO more)
4.) Finish all of the Jeremy Menard content on RIO (17 more vids I think)

Decent session tonight. 13 tourneys I think and nothing over $55. I continue to brick the $55s like mad but whatever.

Took 3rd in the $11 4k Gtd tonight for $400. Sadly TT<JT bvb AIPF for the chip lead 3 handed.

Shipped one of the two $11 27 mans as well and a few other min-cashes. Likely not playing again until either Thursday or Saturday depending on how things go.

TLDR: Cutting trees & making money @ the real job.

Good evening everyone. Well the poker grind is back to normal, normal meaning pretty much breaking even over a still tiny sample of games. Nothing terribly exciting. I'm on pace for my games goal for the month, slightly ahead at the moment actually but may fall behind. The next few days will be minimal if any volume. Work is slowing down for the next few months which is fantastic, but I'll be heading up to my in-laws in Wisconsin tomorrow evening to do some work on the property that the Mrs. and I purchased last February.

It's a 12 acre wooded lot about 2 miles from her folks place. We're in the process (my father-in-law and I predominately) of clearing the 900 feet we need in order to get a driveway from the road to where the house will go. We downed 16 large trees (45-70 footers) when we were up north 3 weeks ago and I need to get back out there to clean up the Oak trees before the temperatures rise and Oak Wilt could become a problem. I'll be working outside with a chainsaw and slogging logs around starting Friday morning in the 24-35 degree Fahrenheit rainy/snowy weather until mid-day Sunday when I'll return home for the week.

Here's a picture of me last spring taking down the first little tree on the property:

And a picture of a bit of the mess I'm headed up tomorrow to start cleaning up:

Results for the month thus far, not including yesterday's break even session are below:

BI Graph of the Month:

$ Graph of the Month:
Spoiler:

Outside of poker, life is great. Work is fantastic at the moment. I was recently introduced to a new prospect that is actively looking for a new partner. That single introduction could result in a nice little $60,000 revenue boost. As of this week, I also convinced a 15 year client of our agency to let us have a look at their medical program (we've handled their dental, vision, life and disability lines of coverage forever, but they had never engaged us about their medical program for various reasons). Anyways, meeting is on the books for two weeks out to begin discussing what our takeover of that program may look like. Could easily be another $40,000 revenue as well. I'd been planting the seed for close to 2 years for us to get involved on this program and the group reached out of their own accord after I knocked their socks off for their ancillary renewal this year.

We've had a bit of a tumultuous start to the year losing a few small accounts, gaining a few large accounts, losing two personnel and replacing them with three new folks in alternative roles. All of which has been extremely favorable for me as I've picked up a handful more accounts (and a significant increase in revenue under management). Unlike most folks in my position within an independent insurance agency, I'm compensated directly based on the value of the book of business that I consult on rather than a fixed salary.

We are currently looking at two more candidates to potentially bring on. We'll be hiring one of the two for sure but would really like to be able to extend offers to both. Both are great candidates in their own right, it's just a matter of figuring out how exactly to plug them into our benefits team (currently 13 folks on the team). The excitement for me stems from the fact that we were a team of 5 when I joined in April of 2015. The growth potential is virtually uncapped in our current position within the marketplace and I have every expectation that we will double in size over the next 3 years. All of our add to staff positions we have evaluated recently have been with the intention of where they can lead our future and how those individuals can grow with our team.

With commission checks and salary increases, my expectation is for my annual earnings to hit a lifetime high this year which feels pretty good. I came out of a lucrative career as a 26 year old when I first started playing poker full time and despite peaking in my poker career around what I expect to make from the real job this year, it feels good to earn that income in a less variable fashion.

Anyways, just felt like sharing a bit about my true passion (my woods!) and more so the amazing team I have the pleasure of working with day in and day out.

Hey there everyone,

Not too much to report. Definitely behind on my goal for the month in regards to tourneys played as I've been focusing on work and family. Played 2 short sessions in the last few days of all cash games, no MTTs as my time has been quite limited and the nights I had the ability to put in 5-7 hour sessions I just wasn't really in the mood to do so.

Up a little shy of $500 playing mainly 50 and 100NL on Ignition over 2000 hands. Broke even at Zone for 1,200 hands (I should know by now not to play zone) but crushed some 100NL, namely when my 2x pot overbet got called on Qd4s3dQsTh while I was holding TT in a 3 bet pot for a total pot just shy of 500bb.

Will update in a few days with some additional life musings and hopefully either get back on the tourney grind here soon or really put some effort into brushing up on my cash game.

Good morning folks.

Not a ton to update, I've played 2 short cash game sessions and have been running well and playing well. Decided to pick up a new computer last week, just waiting on my new monitors to show up to get my new grind station up and running. Looking forward to putting in some solid PIO work once the new set up arrives.

I'm still planning to play MTT's as well once or twice a week moving forward, but it's nice to have the option for cash games when my session time is limited.

Bricked a few MTTs the other day bringing my to about break even on the month on MTTs. Thankfully, I've made a little bit of money in the small amount of 50-100NL that I've played. Been focused on 6-9 max normal tables (and no zone). Broke even at Zone over the first 1500 hands or so. Graph since then since I've avoided Zone and focused on regular tables is below.

Monthly Conclusion Update:

+$900 or so in roughly 35 hours of play. Made about $100 playing timbeys and $800 playing predominately NLHE with a small loss playing PLO. Sadly, no graphs or pretty pictures to represent this lazy month as I just set up a new desktop and monitors this evening and am too lazy to load hand histories off the old machine.

I've also moved on from HEM to DriveHUD due to it's compatability with all of the sites I'm playing on (save Global if I wind up putting in some volume there).

Picked up a new machine so I can adequately use at least the free version of PIO (old machine was an i3 with 4 GB of ram...rofl.

New i7 with 16gb ddr4 a 2TB SATA drive and a mediocre video card. Picked up two 23" HP 23es monitors as well to replace my ancient 23" HP and 24" Samsung. Spent a whopping $800 picking everything up refurbished on Woot. New keyboard, mouse and speakers (well likely a bad ass headset instead of speakers) should be ordered or picked up some time this week to complete the new grind station.

Going to focus May on cash game study.

May Goals:
1.) Gain at least a basic understanding of PIO and run some spots
2.) Play 40 hours of NLHE cash (get back to 6 max)
3.) Time bank required before making any non-trivial river calls - I still feel like I sheriff way too often. Once I have a sample size I'll have an idea if I'm making reasonable calls.

One interesting (at least to me) hand from today's session (been playing 9 max for some silly reason instead of 6 max but only 200 hands per hour when capped at 4 tables on Ignition means I either need to add Global FR games or move back to 6 max I think:

I think I played this right but can't be sure. Thought process was I had a Td blocker so blocking a lot of his quality draws and T9ss/K9ss but villain was running 60/20 over 20 hands so likely to peel flop extremely wide. Pick up the GS on the turn and the over scare card as a great card to barrel and much better for my range than his after he check calls flop. The offsuit ace on the river, while not phenomenal for either of our ranges (and perhaps better for his due to A5ss-A9ss), provides that extra FE against 9x or 7x. Wasn't sure about my sizing on the river nor entirely sure about my turn sizing.

Any/all feedback is welcomed and appreciated. I'm a cash game fish still for the record. Just playing 100NL to learn while avoiding the rake trap of micros. I'm likely a breakeven tagfish but have been running well over my LOL samplesize.

Not that my whopping 200 hands from tonight matter but...:

Will share that 0 equity 120bb loss another time after I PIO it to determine how bad of a play it was...

Hey Everyone,

Played around a little on WPN. Decided I'm not playing there anymore, lol. Super annoying software issues plus the games, while still very beatable, are pretty not ideal compared to Ignition.

Ignition Games Are Dead

Yes, that is VPIP and PFR as first two stats. I busted the 75/25 guy for like $300 so missed including him in the SS...

Anyways, I'm on pace for the month if I include my ACR 2 hours the other night which I won't. I'll have to do a bit of grinding this weekend to catch up to my hours goal.

I am back to 6 max as well as of tonight.

One additional goal for this month, don't sit in the new PLO zone games...

Yes, my volume sucks, lol 4 tabling but hey if I can long term wind up around 10bb/100 or better I'll be super stoked with that at ~325 hands per hour.

Good luck this weekend for you COOPers.

Tonight's Session:

Month To Date:

Made one absolutely atrocious river snap call tonight for which I was pretty pissed with myself. Composed myself within a few seconds but there were a lot of F bombs dropped. 76dd in CO vs aggressive fish in BB. He check raises a 358 rainbow flop for little more than 2x my cbet. I flat, turn 6 bringing backdoor flush draw. He bets 75% of pot. River 7 bringing in the backdoor flush. He pots. I snapped without thinking cause he was pissing me off and I wanted a piece of him.

Not too much else to say. Should get in at least 2 hours tomorrow if not a second session for another hour or two.

Have a great week of work upcoming after knocking a meeting out of the park on Friday for my largest client. Have a prospect meeting on Tuesday that, if I can seal the deal, should be a nice $15k in my pocket at some point over the next 18 months. I really want this one as it's pretty much my ideal client (outside of the fact that they are in the city).

Have a great weekend everyone!

Went in a different direction tonight and played live for the first time in god knows how long. Went to one of my old regular venues. They used to run an lol $2/5 $300 max with 10% up to $8 rake. It's now a $500 max with $7 rake and a BBJ (which hit for 90k last night funny enough). I guess there's a $5/10 $1,500 that runs relatively regularly also and has a table max buy-in once the game is running(supposedly $150k on the table a few weeks ago).

Anyways, ran pretty hot for the 3.5 hours of play and finished +$935. Was up about $1,300 at one point.

Misplayed two hands on the night IMO, neither of which were absolutely terrible, but likely not optimal.

I open 44 from the HJ for $20, get called by button and BB. Flop 754r. BB checks and I bet $45. Button folds BB calls. Turn A, bringing a backdoor FD and BB check raises my $110 bet to $270 with about $180 behind.

BB is competent post flop, aggressive, and very splashy preflop.

I think I should be flatting here and take my odds on boating up, instead I talked myself into a jam, fearful that he may fold if the board pairs and he has a straight (never happening). I think he's also very very capable of making this play with A7, A5, A4 which in hindsight likely makes my shove okay but I was reading a TON of strength in his turn check raise (pot committing him). I'll have to run some ranges later but I think I should just flat the turn and re-evaluate on the river (hoping to boat up?).

Other hand, I limp behind 2 limpers in HJ with Ad7d. CO limps and BTN (older eastern European with a reg like stature raises to $30. Wind up 5 ways to the flop of A75r.

Checks to button (I think I should be leading here when checked to) and he fires $100. Folds to me and I make it $250 (we were about $650 effective to start the hand). After a bit of deliberation button mucks AKo face up. I think I need to lead here or flat call, a check raise just looks too strong on this dry of a board.

Will likely include some live play in my schedule when I can (I enjoy it, but hard to find the time).

I should also note, tonights game didn't play much differently than games did 5 years ago when i played $2/5 pretty regularly. A little tighter, while most of the regs are competent, they are far from good/capable.

Only one remotely interesting hands from today's grind. Curious if folks take a different line on this hand? If the same line, what does your river sizing look like? I wanted to jam but don't think overpairs can ever call a jam, do we go smaller? Villain was looking like a reg, could likely comfortably 4! vs his SB 3bet range but had only seen one 3 bet from him in ~65 hands (playing 27/23) and it was AA against a shorty. Little nervous of wanting to puke if I get 5 bet this deep...rather take a flop in position...

Another two hours of poker work tonight. An hour on Poker Snowie (500 hands) playing at "intermediate" level. Still have a lot of work to do but I do enjoy that tool. Will likely have to purchase it after my free trial runs out.

Played an hour on Ignition after, just some more 100NL 6 max. Still running well. Lost a 120bb 65/35 with QQ vs AJdd AIPF tonight but oh well. 6 winning sessions in a row.

I think I finally understand why I never used to do well playing cash. I was always so focused on playing "correctly", trying to grind too many tables at micro stakes while still learning rather than focusing on maximum exploitation of my opponents (and population tendencies). There's a slim chance I get a live session in this weekend but will try Saturday evening if the wife will let me run away for a bit.

Just gonna keep doing me and try to hit my volume (hours) goal for the month. Currently 10.5 of my 40 hours on the tables. Ignition graph for the month below.

Mini Update:

Played 5 hours live last night. +$2,090 playing $2/5 at Grand Vic again. Ran like jesus in terms of pre-flop card distribution, aces 5 times, kings 3 times, queens twice. Those were about the only playable hands I had. A couple suited aces but very few broadways or suited connectors. Needless to say I won a lot of pots pre with 3 bets, it took until the end of the night for my first large pot.

Made some good thin value bets, some good folds, and had a villain kind enough to donate $900 to me with one pair when I had top set. Same villain stacked my set for $400 his first hand at the table when he turned a naked gutshot.

I'll share some hands later when I have some time.

15/40 hours on the month now. +$4,252.24.

Lost $1,000 even in 4.5 hours of live $2/5 tonight. Lost an $800 55/45 and $400 85/15. Nothing too crazy.

I did barrel off in one interesting spot, may have been a tilt barrel but hey it worked.

$450 effective stacks, towards the end of the evening. Hero is BB with Ah6s. Limps around, 6 ways to the flop.

Flop ($30): 3d4c5s
Hero leads for $20 and gets 2 callers (mp and btn)

Turn ($90): 8s
Hero checks, MP bets $25, button calls, hero check raises to $125. MP calls, button folds. Now that I've been called I'm planning to barrel all non board pairing spades and A762. Placing villain most likely on a medium overpair, two pair, or a set.

River ($365): Ks
Hero jams ($305) IIRC, MP folds after a minute. Hero shows the 6s.

Table was a bit nitty tonight, one fun player, lot of limp folding, sadly I just never really made a hand but it was about time after 8 winning sessions in a row. Paid off a $100 river bet from the fun player on AJ86K when he check called twice and then led river. He'd been playing really slow all night, taking lots of time with decisions when he had solid two pairs, etc.

Sadly he had KJ here and I think my AT despite blocker to QT is likely just a fold but in the moment I thought I had a timing tell due to how quickly he bet. Watched him triple barrel QQ9AT with 66 earlier and get snapped by 97o lol. Still don't understand that guys river call, I mean, I do, but no way.

Other than my questionable at best river call and my barrel off, not much of note. No premiums and whiffed a ton of boards with suited connectors, suited aces, unsuited Broadway's, etc. Barreled a couple times in good spots and got through about as often as I didn't.

Not sure what the rest of the weekend will look like for me but good luck everyone!

Curious what led you from playing poker to your current job? That seems like a very fast transition; did you have a background in employee benefits prior to poker?

Hey, thanks for asking. I had no background in benefits before poker.

I graduated high school in spring 2003 and chose not to go to college. By fall of 2003 i was working for a telecommunications consulting and contracting firm traveling the country. I did that until January 2011.

Chose to leave poker and pursue an alternative career for a few reasons in Oct 2012 (left in Dec 2012).

1.) Family life as a grinder is challenging and I found myself becoming more and more disconnected from my personal relationships.

2.) Financial stability was the second major facor. As my wife and I were aiming to begin having children, the inconsistent income of poker, while being highly compensated on average, was making planning for a family difficult.

3.) My largest success and how I wanted to continue to earn a living was in online mtts/sngs so I could work my own schedule from home. Games were drying up and earning a 6 figure income was becoming increasingly difficult in the US without relying on heavy MTT schedules which is not something i wanted to pursue long term.

I started consulting a number of family and friends regarding their thoughts about different industries. I settled on the insurance industry as I knew I could land an entry level sales role with no prior experience (1099 commission only) and grow from there to wherever I wanted to go within the industry.

I spent 2.5 years as a 1099 sales agent selling medicare supplements and life insurance earning about $32k my first year and would have been around $80k in year 3 all while receiving excellent training.

I then left that 1099 role and joined my current agency in a sales capacity (W2) about 4 months before the birth of my son. After 15 months, at my request, I transitioned to a consultative role to existing clients eliminating my sales quota, but still allowing for substantial income growth based on how we structured my compensation arrangement. Simply put, I love sales but didn't want to "prospect" anymore.

I received some good news last week and if all goes as planned over the next 2 weeks, I should have 2 new clients closed by July 1 providing an additional $20k/year income stream on top of my current ~$150k compensation.

While I had no prior experience, like most successful poker pros, I'm reasonably intelligent, have an affinity for numbers and details, coupled with 5 years of sales experience and training, places me in the perfect role to utilize all of my current skillsets.

Thankfully I have a good enough relationship with my "managers" so that I'm not bucketed on a flat salary like most other folks in my role. After I played poker for a living, I never really wanted someone else to dictate what I was worth (salary or hourly wage) and with how my agreement is structured, and my managers willingness to work with me to achieve my long term goals, I get paid precisely based on the level and quantity of work that I perform.

Just to throw a number at it, the book of business I consult pays our agency roughly $1,300,000 per year. I get a small piece of the pie for what I do but I have the capacity to handle high volume (and ideally, a book of business worth up to $2,500,000 if we continue to structure it correctly).

Interesting post OP. Not too much detail. Even being buddies in the poker past, I still didn't exactly have a good idea what you were doing at your job. Congrats on the success in building up!
