A few months back I made a thread about quitting my job and playing poker. I never followed through with the thread but I did finally quit.

Starting Bankroll: $5k
Currently playing 2/2/3 at California Grand Casino
I've been there three times this week and have made a little over $1k. (Excited for variance to kick in)
Current Bankroll: $6020

Going to keep grinding these stakes until busto or my bankroll is around $10k and splash around in 2/5.

Anyone else around the Bay Area?

Cool challenge!

I'm in the bay area but if you want to talk to someone who plays regularly and well (i'm pretty mediocre) look up WhirlingDervish. He has a nice thread on here.

I looked up your prior thread. I assume your life roll is way bigger (it's got to be to live in the bay area and take more than a week off work lol) than your bankroll for poker. Normally I've heard people just say a big number that's supposed to be for everything.

I also used to live in LA so if you do move down there it'll be better overall for poker and cost of living (still not cheap).

I’ll look them up. Where do you normally play?

Yes the life roll is larger, luckily I have a partner to split costs so that makes this easier.

The goal is actually to move to LA. Love the weather and vibe.

I played mostly at CA Grand. I lived in Walnut Creek so it was pretty close by. I have played a few times at Bay 101 and once at each Graton and Lucky Chances. It's been a while since I've played live (last time was in vegas).

Are you no longer in the Bay Area?

Just finished a quick session. Bought in for $300 and cashed out with $699.

Bankroll is now at $6438

I usually leave the table when I hit a pretty good number as I tend to spew when I have a large chip stack. Need to plug that leak.

Nice session!

I'm still in the bay area. I moved into SF from Walnut Creek recently so I'm not that close to CA Grand. I also haven't gone out to play poker in a while.

I have a similar issue of getting ahead a bit then bleeding chips. I feel like 1/3 of the $ I lose is from being too loose, and the rest is just bad luck when I'm all in. I normally get it in 55%+ and typically I'm the one putting the pressure on players to make bad or mediocre calls. Still, it's an area I can improve on to make my win rate positive haha (right now I'm down $1200 after 81 hours of play in ~2 years).

Hit & Run?!?

Played a quick 2 hour session of 1/1/2 at a different card room. Play was incredibly slow and 5 handed at times. Bought in for $200, left with $473.

Generally when I decide to leave I always leave right before the BB gets to me. I'm sitting with a stack of $410 when I decide to play my QTss hand UTG. I end up winning the hand against a guy that just sat down and as I'm racking up chips he hits me with that "hit and run." I politely let him know that I have been here for a few hours and was planning to leave this orbit anyways.

What are your guys' opinions on this?

Bankroll now at $6711

Haha, nice win and funny that the guy gives you crap for leaving. That doesn't seem like a hit and run. You've been there a while. If you've gotten a drink and tipped a waitress once then I think you are officially there long enough to leave whenever you want haha

I think if you’re in any kind of card room it’s absolutely fine to leave whenever.

One of the biggest leaks I have in my game has always been that guilt that gets me to stick around longer than I really want to/should.

I think the only time there is a courtesy required is in a private game, sometimes calling 30 minutes is required.

I learned how to play in the LA underground where it was required to call 30 minutes if you were up on the session at most of the games I played in so I always assumed it was a learned habit of guilt.

Obviously, you’re there to take their money so there is no obligation to stick around and give it back! Lol

I used to feel the same guilt. I've been trying to adapt the idgaf mentality. It's been working out so far.

I'm a Moron

Played another quick 2 hour session of 1/1/2 at the same place as before. I talked to the guy that accused me of hit & run and he let me know he was joking. I'm sure he was, he had only been there a hand so I didn't have a read on his humor.

Bought in with $200, cashed out at $368

This club seems a bit less friendly to bad players than the other club. I made a horrendous play with 93ss and put a short stack all in. I had middle pair on a T95 rainbow board. I have about 200 behind, he has like 70. He leads out for 20 into a pot of like 30. I repop him all in. turn was blank, river 3. He goes nuts and calls me and a few other people at the table morons. Definitely wasn't my best moment.

Current Bankroll: $6878
Current Hourly: $125

Live folks go on tilt all the time. Played with a fella who was down, we were short handed on a limit table, but he was calling ATC. Easy to make money off of. We have a high hand bonus every 20 minutes, and he hit a straight flush with his ATC approach. We all say, there you go, money back. He takes a break from table, since straight flush when card room not full very hard to beat.

But, alas, someone beat it. Guy was still gone, I stated he was really going to be pissed when he came back. Pissed was a polite word for his reaction, chips thrown around room. When they tilt, they really tilt.

I find it super entertaining when people tilt.

The Losing Session

I finally had my first losing session yesterday. For some reason I just chose to play extremely bad. I was calling way too wide pre, and getting my money in behind. I needed a losing session though, I was getting way too comfortable. Luckily this wasn't too bad of a loser.

Bought in for $600 (2 buy ins) at 2/2/3, left with $593.

Current Bankroll: $6,872
Current Hourly: $90.22

Going on Vacation for the next week and a half in Florida. Hoping I don't die in the hurricane.

Just wondering if you have money for living and paying bills outside of your bankroll?

I did the same thing you did awhile ago and found that 1/2 stakes are way too low to support living and paying rake at the poker room. My first month i had 1 losing day out of 24 maybe? this sustained me for a couple months where i broke even and had a losing month but in no way was it worth the amount of time I put into playing.

Just not worth it at all with a low bankroll at low stakes. Anyways good luck.

Hey yeah good question.

I was pretty fortunate to have a great paying job before starting this journey. My life roll is significantly more than my bankroll.

I’m starting small to learn a bit more about the game. I plan on moving up in stakes once my bankroll can support the larger buy ins.

I’m having fun, if I go busto I still have my life roll to fall back on. But this is infinitely better than my stressful job.

$500 High Hand Every 30 Minutes

Didn’t win one... BUT

Today was a pretty good session. The local card room was running a $500 high hand promotion every 30 minutes from 10am-10pm

I bought in for $200 and stayed and played for 4.5 hours and left with $512

I only spewed a few times in a few bad spots. I also ran pretty well so that also helps.

Current Bankroll: $7,184
Current Hourly: $86.50

How much is life roll?

Your bankroll is very weak.

If life roll is 12 months, and won't tap it, okay.
