Hey guys,

Pretty meh Sunday yesterday, I made a run to like 300th or so in the Sunday Storm and cashed the Sunday Million for like the 3rd time ever (which is the same number of times I've bubbled it, lol) and also went pretty deep in the 888 Sunday Challenge, but couldn't get any super deep runs together. Running pretty bad lately with my deep runs I guess, but I'm really not keeping track of it. I got kinda tilted a few times last week when I was playing while feeling kinda sick, but apart from that I'm really pleased with how I'm keeping control of my mental state lately.

Next thing I need to concentrate on is just staying more focused when playing, and really getting in the zone more often. The Mental Game of Poker 2 comes out soon and it's mostly focused on that exact concept, so I can't wait to read it.

In terms of results, I've racked up a little pile of makeup at the moment with my ABI being higher than it used to be (around $45 since the beginning of March, compared to $30 in Jan/Feb), so my goal for the next few weeks is to drop my ABI back down again a little bit, and get myself out of the $15k or so of makeup I racked up before the time SCOOP comes around. I don't wanna go into SCOOP with a load of makeup to think about - it'll be the biggest couple of weeks of the year so I wanna go into it fresh and with a good mindset. Looking forward to grinding up some results and getting some Ws.

what kind of stuff do you do to handle tilt/stay in the zone? I handle it way better than I use to but I can't help myself from going off in the chat every now and then haha, and I know putting myself in that mindset is the worst thing I can do

In my experience (and after listening to a lot of hours of Jared Tendler, I'm pretty sure this is true), it's the belief that tilt needs to be 'handled' that's the problem. Most things that people do to 'handle' tilt are the equivalent of putting a folded up piece of paper under a chair leg to stop the chair from being unbalanced, despite the fact the leg is never going to grow back - a temporary solution to a permanent problem.

Until you discover why you tilt and correct your misconceptions about the game, realign your expectations and make peace with how the game works, you will always tilt. Analysing your tilt and discovering why it happens is the equivalent of sanding down the other legs of the chair to make them even again - it levels you out, stops you waiting for yourself to just 'get over it' or 'become immune' somehow, and addresses the real problem.

I honestly think 'going off in chat' is one of the worst things you can do as a professional poker player. It's bad for the game, and it's bad for you in so many ways. You wouldn't shout at a co-worker in an office just because you had to work late, so why would you berate someone at the poker table? Both scenarios make you come off like a complete dick, and if you truly don't care about people thinking you're a complete dick, then that's gonna cause you a lot of problems in life.

EDIT: Also, don't play if you're tired or sick. Pretty much the only times I tilt are when I haven't had enough sleep or don't have enough energy.

Good post. Like the chair description haha. Yeah its def something I need to work on, I want to take the chat off but I don't want to lose the option of chatting in general. It's never over a bad beat, it's just over bad plays. I hate sitting there stewing on it without letting the other player know how stupid what they did was. I've got the bad beats under control, it's just the CRAZY plays that drive me insane.
But what I'm doing is obviously more stupid as it's bad for my game, and why should I be berating players who are the ones that make MTTs profitable? haha
Thx for the advice GL

Exactly. Doing it that way is even worse, because you're literally costing yourself money every time you do it by telling the other person how much they suck.

MTTs are dumb though, because someone can make a terrible play in a spot that will never, ever come up again and you can lose a bunch of equity that you'll never get back. If I could do it all again there's no way I'd become an MTT player.

Yeah I dread the day something like that happens in a once in a lifetime spot.
Everytime I think of a bad beat in the worst spot, I think to FTOPS 2011, guy horribad calls a 5bet shove with 33, guy shows KK.
Think it was about 500k up top.

x x K 3 3

I'll never forget it haha.

Still though, I don't think I could handle being a SNG or cash player, such a good rush running deep in tournies, even better binking them

Sometimes it happens in cash too. You see a 85/60 guy with 20% 3b who is on a rush and just keeps sucking out on people over and over again and he cracks your AA with like 97o. You want to play more because he's super deep and bad, but he quits after 30 minutes and you never see him again. That sucks :/
However I understand how frustrating it is on final tables in MTTs, I remember so many hands from the Million where people were super bad and kept sucking out. I don't know if I'd be able to stand these beats mentally, the amount of money at final tables is just too big imo.

I guess its obvious what you said but since english not my native language could you elaborate a bit more on what you meant?

Sure. I just mean that if I could go back to the beginning of my poker career and start again, I would definitely not choose to play MTTs full-time.

That statement implies that either you think the level at which you currently play isn't high enough/ money potential in MTTs isn't good enough as compared to other formats you could currently be playing while also saying that a switch to a different format is absolutely impossible. I think one of these has to be wrong. If you have the drive to get sth done then IMO there s always a way. And knowing you from ur prev threads you seem to be a driven guy. Rethink ur opinion maybe? Just some rando thoughts man best of luck

I didn't mean to imply I don't think it's possible to switch. I do intend to switch in future. It's just not the right time for it at the moment. I think switching games is necessary from time to time, I just mean that starting out my career in MTTs was a stressful way to start.

I have similar chat issues and have had for a long time. I've taken a lot of self enforced chat bans and say such ****ed up **** when I'm angry that I've even had a few short official bans.
But it is ****ing terrible and I always feel ashamed at the thought of people I respect seeing that and realising what a prick I am lol, and of course at being a contributor to games getting tougher that has nothing to do with me getting better.
It's just a terrible thing to do for too many reasons to list.

...and the most important reason for not spewing off in the chat that I didn't even hint at, is that you possibly end up making the guy who just wanted to have a bit of fun and let off some steam feel bad, when they had nothing to feel bad about...obviously there are "business" reasons for not doing it that tie into that, but that is clearly the most important reason not to spew off in the chat...a lot of these guys aren't out to cut throats they're just looking for an escape like we are when we play video games.
