Suppidysup.
As mentioned I took last week off to spend time with the gf. Not a single hand of poker was played until today and thus nothing updateable happened...Pokerwise.
We ve had an awesome week checking out a bunch of places all over Malta and since i had promised a few TRs ever since I started this thread and never made any the following is likely gonna be a tldr post with a bunch of pics, and for my good friends from the UK and Down Under -
- theres obviously gonna be some pix of some delicious meals we cooked
can honestly say I ve never eaten so many amazing things in such a small timeframe
----------------------------------------------
the first notable spot we checked out was Mellieha Bay in the north of Malta:
which actualy was the first real sand beach i ve been to since i moved here. Pretty nice especially when compared to the rocks we have around st. julians/sliema but it took a full hour on the bus to get there.
A few days later we decided to quit doing the bus thing and do what the cool kids do and rent a car. Found a pretty decent deal for a Ford Fiesta and in typical maltese fashion had the car keys within 10 minutes of entering the office. I made my license in germany about 3 years ago and since then have basically not driven at all so there was some risk there so we decided to take it easy so that i could get used to a) driving b) on the *wrong* side c) for longer periods of time and after about an hour i had gotten accustomed to all of the above (or so i thought) so we decided to check out marsaxlokk and then Marsaskala:
However, getting there wasnt exactly easy since neither me (driver) nor my gf (navigator) had any experience in our new 'jobs' so we ended up roughly going this way:
we were real smart to forget our big roadmap of malta at home so all we had to go by was the minimap on the back of a malta tourist guide whch turned out pretty useless by the time we got to Valetta (we drove there thinking we could just drive down the coast till we get to where we were headed. Instead we nded up getting pretty lost just outside of valetta lol)
after a while we did manage to finally get a view of the bay that marsaxlokk is located in:
Marsaxlokk (pronounced marsashlock) is a cute little fishing town located in a really quiet bay where most of the 'action' takes place in the early hours which we happened to miss since we arrived at around 1-2pm. Here's what we saw when we had lunch there:
A quiet town with nothing at all going on but around 20 restaurants serving the day's catch. I gotta say the fish they have there is pretty amazing.
So from there our plan was to head over to Marsaskala head to the beach then find a campsite to chill in overnight and get up in time for the sunrise (aaawww cheesy ikr?) and given both towns are less than 10 km apart that shouldnt take much time right? Not for car n00bs like us haha. this is where we ended up going after lunch
In our defense though, the traffic signs in Malta (esp if u re used to good solid German traffic signage) are absolute trash. Not to excuse our ******edness but ya know...things added up there. So we basically got back to Valetta around... 6pm just in time to buy another big roadmap. At this point we were both fairly close to saying fk it and going home to sleep but then decided to give it another shot till sundown (around 7:30pm) to get it done and fiiiinally got to marsaskala to see this:
pretty beautiful bay and looked like a great spot to watch the sun rise in the morning. The big problem was that there was rocks and rocks only so no way we could set up our tent. So we had to find a hill/patch of grass in the middle of the town which we were lucky to find while the sun was still there. Barely, but still there:
town
tent
and after all that was finally out of the way we had a nice dinner in an Italian style restaurant. Had amazing ravioli and some local beer ('Cisk' pronounced Chisk) which i gotta say i m a big fan of, went to sleep on our hill and woke up to this:
first over-the-sea sunrise both of us had ever seen. was beautiful.
so to keep that theme alive we decided to drive up north, actually get to spend some time on the beach that day and finish the day off watching a sunset on one of the beaches in the aptly named 'golden bay'.
It seemed like we had learned our lessons in navigating as all the driving we did henceforth went incredibly smooth withut ever getting lost. I think it took us less than 20min to get home for example (4-5 hrs the day before lol)
so heres where we spent the day:
and ended the whole adventure with this beauty:
thats pretty much all the travelling we did. did a bunch of shopping in the capitol Valetta or in the party town called Paceville but didnt hit any clubs or take much in the way of pix.
We did however as i mentioned earlier cook amazing stuff almost every day. didnt take pix of everything but here's what we made:
Rabit stew (marinated in balsamico)
Shepherd's pie
Seafood Paella
Sticky honey Pork Ribs
used the juice of the ribs to marinate chicken for an asian style stir fry
paella:
ribs:
hard to tell which one of those was my favourite rly as they were all amazing. will deffo make them all again!
