Enjoyed catching up, especially the last one.

How many times have you kissed the toe? I'm setting the line at under 12

The chip package you sent me was lost for a few days in the sorting facility here in Tallahassee but after setting their best agents upon the task it has been located and is waiting for me to pick it up.

I'm looking after someones very poorly trained dog and can sympathize with your frustration regarding the kids, the little bugger just chewed up a finely worn pair of dollar store flip flops lucky for him he's very cute.

Week 8, Day 4

Yukon time, I tell you... The same day, old like the mountains, repeated over and over again... which is probably why I mistakenly wrote Week 4 in my previous post, as time simply twirls and meets itself again, right

I appreciate the silence. The implicit. That moment in between hands where we cease to be competitors and become fellow Yukoners again. I guess it shouldn't come as a surprise, but tucked behind the discretion of the humblest players, lies a great amount of skills . Like this fellow tonight, for instance, that I have known for years, who is allegedly one of the best miners in the Yukon... Or this other fellow, who dresses simple and talks in all modesty, who happens to be a multimillionaire...

Never kissed the toe ; being French and all, I do select wisely which lips mine will carress

Glad your got those chips man, and really glad I selected priority mail so you could have a tracking number

Kids are gone actually, as the mom (who's house I live in) has taken them to camp for 2 months (she is a miner). Will help for the online grind, yet I do love those little buggers (despite their tilting high-pitch screams ).

A little tilted from my live run bad in 400bbs + pots, where my 80%+ equity repeatedly fails to hold up : -400$ live, +100 online. Bah, it is what it is.

Week 8, Day 5

There are 2 specific items that make Dawson City a notorious place : the sour toe (as previously mentioned this week) and the Gold Rush tv Show, swiftly putting these northern parts on the international map. Us, locals, don't think much of this reality show, yet it remains part of our attraction.

For the most part, the tv crew has been known to be arrogant, an attitude that does not fit well in a remote town where simplicity, both in the lifestyles and personal attitudes, is probably ranked as the highest virtue... So I was pretty impressed when one of the cameraman humbly introduced himself as "I work for this tv show called Gold Rush" when the subject of his work came into the discussion. And it was not fake modesty. We need more humbleness in the this world (especially in the poker one ).

Bah, slightly tilted after losing a 900$ pot to a 2 outer on the river... But whatever, I am happy with the way I played and variance will come my way... (it has to, right ). I actually had to get away with murder in 2 X 600$ pots in order to break even tonight That said, the next hand is about a bluff catching and one of the worst possible live tells : looking down at your cards when a potential flush hits the board.

1-2, 4 handed, 200$ effective stacks

Villain is one of the nittiest players in town. He is a small winner, yet has a predictable range, obviously. He also has a tendency to get out of his comfort zone to try to get me... Anyhow, villain limps in for 2$, I make it 15$ to go from BB with AJ, villain calls.

Flop (33$)
764

Not a great flop for us, but considering that his limping range consists of mid pocket pairs and broadways (he raises 1010+, AK, perhaps AQs...), I cbet 15$ for protection/value. He calls.

Turn (63$)
764 2

I decide to check/give up, yet reassess when villain looks down at his cards and bets 20$. I tank-call, knowing that his range is limited to 6 combos of 88, 99 and then about 20 combos of AJ, A10, KQ, KJ, QJ...

River (103$)
764 2 8

Gin river I check-snap call his bet of 55$
Spoiler:
he flips over KJ

Challenge : +10, 030.20$
Spoiler:
cashed in about 50$ of rakeback just so I wouldn't dip back into the 4 digits in this challenge... It is all about the psychological perspective, yo

The same faces. Those brown, blending walls. The pictures. The tingling slot machines. Every night, those Cancan shows on repeat. Yet looking down at those AA still fulfills all anticipations... The unexpected suckouts remain a shock... A final table, a joyful experience.

Lots of Native players over here ; pretty funky to oftentimes see a table consisting of 60% natives, 30% French Canadians and the last guy an English Canadian born Yukoner

Interesting situation today at the final table when, down to 6 players (pays top 5), the 5 other players had in between 3-6bbs each while I was sitting on 21bbs Can you say ICM pressure I was shoving top 60% of my range depending on who was in the BB and who had enough of my aggression...

+1100$, my AK > AQo > KJo

Week 8, Day 7

The skies came crushing down on us in the form of thunder/pouring run, which made my short walk back quite eventful and wet Unfortunately, the action inside the casino was uneventful, probably inversely correlated to the amount of rain pouring outside ... Only 10 people showed up for the tournament, which on Music Fest Weekend, is an absolute slap to the face
Spoiler:
even a bitch slap...

Got down to HU for 2 days in a row, against a decent agro Alaskan fellow who put a ton of pressure on me during a cold streak of cards. No problem, as we were 30bbs effective. But when the blinds doubled up and we found ourselves at 15bbs, I 3bet-shoved A4 and he snap-called with J7 I guess that because the tides were changing and my stacks were rejuvenating themselves, he snap-lost patience
Spoiler:
nevertheless, his 39% got the best of me
I mean, at 15bbs effective and vs a decent player, I will take the 61% any day, this said, vs your normal opponent over here, I would not venture under 70%
Spoiler:
yup, I figure my edge to be titanic enough to limp/min-raise and repeatedly get away with murder post-flop

It is 7pm here, out west, and considering that it is Yukon time and all, and that even from a macro/universal perspective, quantum time gets to be pretty funky, I will just call it a week, despite the fact that I still have quite a few hours of grind ahead of me tonight

Like I mentioned yesterday, I will be choosing different Yukon towns to blog about this coming week, accompanied with pics/stories. I also finished my post for my travel blog about the Gold Rush, so expect that in a couple of days

Week 9, Day 1

I had the privilege of experiencing a few handfuls of outdoors activities that have been simply magnificent. To name the most memorable ones :

- Grand Canyon hike down + up :camping by the Colorado River, smoking a joint and watching the full moon rise over the canyon was simply a unique and mystical experience. Yes, I did almost die on the way back up, under the 50c+ sun (word of the wise : DO NOT LIGHT UP ONE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO HIKE UP), yet it remains a must do.

- Camel safari in the Rajasthan Desert was surreal : I had never experienced a peaceful atmosphere within which every single sound reverberated - there were not many - could be observed, analyzed and even reflected upon, until spending a few weeks in the omniscient desert.

- 7 day trek in the Himilayan mountains : the weather was chilly and wintery, yet the scenery was splendid ; top of the world baby!!!

- Canoe trip down the Yukon river : don't know what was more amazing, the flow of the river, of the wine or the great company of 4 jokestars that constituted our group

- A week stint in the heart of desolation : unlike most national parks, in Kluane, you rapidly find yourself in the heart of nowhere

Yukon River. Canoeing down the river is an old man's game : simply let yourself drift with the current and enjoy life

3 years ago, I decided to take the week off from the grind, catch a ride down to Whitehorse, rent a car and meet up with this girl - that I was previously casual with - for a 5 day camping trip in Kluane National Park. She unfortunately deliberately let me know, within a few minutes, that she was not single and had no intentions on being unfaithful Nevertheless, this did not prevent us from having a great week.

Pretty intimidating how after an hour or 2 or hiking, you find yourself in the core of the bush, with no fellow humans kms upon kms away, and half ass expecting to encounter a bear at every footstep...

So instead of settling for the taste of those fine boobs, I deliberately let myself get lost in the middle of this grandeur... A perfect reminder that we are but a dot compared to the known/unknown forces that transcend us... that we belong, are part of this whole cosmos thing, you know dude.

They are a ton of glaciers in Kluane National Park. We would at times see a car pop by on the road, only to disappear and relinquish us to the heart of the wilderness, once again minuscule, a part of the whole

Every place holds its getaways. In Montreal, it would be the Laurentides, a mountain chain about 1h north of the city :

We would find some remote waterfalls to camp by, jam by a bonfire and munch on a whole bunch of mushrooms

And even here, in a remote town like Dawson, you get that claustrophobic feeling of being confined... So 5 Mile lake is a common escape little haven for Dawsonites :

Little dock on which we would listen to tunes from ipod/cheap speakers, sip on wine, pop open some shotgun beers and the likes

When you are grinding 60h/week in kitchens, sweating balls like no tomorrow, all you can think of, on that rare day off, is to **** off So **** off we did, jumping in my jeep at 11pm, just after the shift, driving the 180 kms separating us, thus getting there at 3am Why a couple of hundred clicks away, you might ask... well, for a remote Canadian remote town, Dawson is seriously lacking some nice lakes to swim in Hence, the need for a long distance round trip drive of 8h just for a single day off

We would make up for our shortage of time though... Oh did we make up for it : a ton of shotguns upon arrival, a few shooters here and there, until we past out, drunk, slept for a couple hours, rinse, repeat

Interestingly though, 5 Mile Lake is also a getaway for the Mayo folks, so a ton of children would show up in the afternoon, while we were staggering drunk, creating an interesting dynamic of sober-family-folks-meet-advanced-drunkards

The end of the world. That fine line, at the horizon, where aspirations meet expectations. An imaginary realm. The pursuit of an impossible quest.

In my 20s, I was chasing this unattainable dream : somehow, somewhere inside of me, I thought that if I pushed the limits of possibilities far enough, I was going to find some form of truth. Call it a metaphysical journey, a young man's innocence or simple desperation, but the pursuit of this climax is what brought me to the peak of the Article Circle, up in Inuvik.

Inuvik. Looks exactly what one might expect : Industrious, unimaginative and frankly hideous

We were 25 when me and my gf decided to go up to Inuvik. We were young, in love, and somewhat on a farewell trip, as she was going back to Montreal for University, and I to India for, you know, enlightment or something

We hitchhiked from Dawson to Inuvik, making a love nest out of our journey We didn't care much for the destination or even our brief stint to Tuktuyatuk, one of the small islands within the Arctic Ocean :

North of the Globe baby! There is 2 ways to get up to the North-West Territories : north of Dawson, on Dempster Highway, or north Edmonton, about 3000km east of us

We would go on to spend another year together, my gf and I, but this trip was one of connection and symbolic breakup.

North of the world folks!!! Where the Arctic Ocean is punctuated by a ton of minuscule Canadian islands

There are quite a few notable roads that I had the pleasure of dwelling upon, which were splendid for reasons varying from splendor degree, surprise factor, visual eye candy or introduction to different forms of vegetation/scenery.

Road 1, off the Californian coast, was spectacular let alone for its splendid view that overseas the ocean... Then you have this single lane rural road in Guatemala, linking Coban City to the Honduras border, upon which you could contemplate, a few hundred metres below, a ton of car wreckages that had fallen to their death... Or up here, we have the Alaskan Highway.

The Alaskan Highway extends from Dawson Creek all the way to Delta Junction, Alaska :

You never get bored of the scenery on this road

Of course, the view is breathtaking for the extent of its 2700 kms, but what distinguishes the Alaska Highway from other Rocky Mountain highways, is its isolation : the absence of traffic enhances somewhat the proximity/intimacy with nature.

And then you have these majestic mammals, old like the world, crossing the road as if everyday is Sunday

Unfortunately, I also had the displeasure of driving down to Vancouver during the first snowstorm of the year ; since we were hard pressed to make it down to the WSOPC in time, we drove 24/7, making those snowy ditches/cliff drops even more merciless

It is but a long session, poker is one long session... Perhaps we should make a mantra out of it... With some chanting and all, playing this friendly reminder, every night before bedtime...

A bit tilted after one of those meh-whatever-not-great-but-not-terrible sorta hands, which saw me lose 300bbs (-150 in EV) , just when I had racked up my chips, ready to leave But whatever, lets leave those negative emotions behind and focus on a solid finish to the month.

Monthly Report

Live : Not a solid month overall, but running really, really bad in 800$+ pots, will naturally affect my winrate negatively. Like previously mentioned, sitting down at the table with these guys is a huge + life happiness EV thing : +2800$ in 132h.

888 : Have been putting in more volume at the 100 Snap tables, thus slowly moving my action from 50 upwards (hopefully...). Really happy that I was offered a 1000$ bonus this morning : life is good : +1670$ in 42h.

Party Poker : wondering how the purchase of Bwin by 888 will affect this site... +968$ in 27h.

Total : +5443$ in 202h.

Mental State : overall pretty darn good, despite the few lapses, lack of motivation - at times -, and general laid back attitude (volume wise and not reaching my monthly milestones on neither 888 or Party). I will again try to reach 5 figures in August, while renewing my Palladium and Platinum statuses (especially considering that I will be playing full time online midway through September).

Bah, that's it for tonight, but since I overloaded you guys with a ton of numbers and all, wanted to finish this post on the lighter, sexier side

From LAG to TAG... Or perhaps, from 20s to 30s... Not really sure if the transition is purely stylistic, or a level of maturity... I do know that my game is no longer contrived... That it comes naturally... Gone are the days where I went to war every hand, trying to be victorious by all means, be it triple barreling in dubious spots or even getting under my opponents skin to scratch my way outwards...

Sure, I still 3bet A5 for instance, a move that remains unknown to my live peers, yet I let the game come to me... A sense of peace, of acceptance has gradually settled in. Let the game flow, let the game flow...

I look down at A4 and decide to limp in, as my opponent is quite agro and with 18bbs effective, I would hate life if I opened to 2bbs and would have to fold to a shove...

We are HU, as the short field of 10 players has been disseminated to the last 2... I am opting for a limping/low variance approach, as a min-open does not seem to get any folds... She snap-shoves on me ; I take a few seconds to remind myself that she would not shove 18bbs with her premium range, and make the call : my A4o > K10o.

Sure, it is pleasing to be on the right side of variance (albeit my first all in vs her was unsuccessful : Ax < Kx), nevertheless more so satisfying to not be out to conquer the world anymore. Or on a mission to crush souls.

Still haven't decided what the theme will be this week, but will come up with some ideas tonight... I hope so

I had forgotten that familiar feeling of TILT... Those ants crawling underneath the skin, trying by all means to scratch a way out... Even the gorgeous afternoon with its golden sun were lost on me, as the outside world lost its grip on my tilted soul... Only those damn ants filling me with an urge to destroy, to exterminate, to nuke the world... Darn, maybe it is all that acid I did in the past...

Thankfully though, I still managed to put myself back together, to come back to the virtual world, and crawl back from the 1000$ hole I had dug myself in (in 2h of play ) to a mere 250$ hit : -250$ online in 8h.

How I got away with murder this week :

A LAG player opens from MP to 10$ which, considering that she splits her range, is always a medium strength hand, making my call with Q9 OTB a very enticing and profitable one. 5 of us see the flop of :

Flop (50$)
1062

Our LAG lady pursues her story by betting 25$ ; we call as does another player. We could of raised her, but considering that she pots the top of her range and half pots medium strength hands for info/value, no need to play our hand face-up.

Turn (125$)
1062 3

After villain 1 checks and that LAG continues with a 40$ bet, we make it 125$ to go ; only the LAG calls after some deliberation.

River (375$)
1062 3 9

Villain checks, I quickly bet 200$, she snap-folds East game Life is good when you are a serial killa

Only 6 weeks left to this challenge, and we are relatively on pace for that 25k (it kinda depends on how I will do during the White Ram/season ending tournaments). Thx for following guys, I truly appreciate it

I have been enjoying grinding from home lately - AKA the comfort of my pyjamas/couch -, but will be spending more time at the casino in August, as a few busy weekends are coming up. There is also a bounty tournament on August 22 (400$ + 50$ bounty +25$ rake), which should be fun... +450$ online in 4h.

Just as a simple personal reminder how juicy the live games can be here, lets look back at my milestones during the years :

- Biggest single night score in 7h of cash game : 4300$. I got away with repeated murder, ran like God and put the whole table on tilt TBH, I don't remember the last 2 hours of that evening, as shooters upon shooters upon... were had Don't even remember cashing out... But did grab my wallet, first thing in the morning, to make sure my winnings had not dissipated themselves

- Biggest loss : 1700$. Standard run bad, but also facing a lineup, in an afterhours game, of out-of-towners that regularly plays together...

- Biggest White Ram weekend : +6500$. Pretty low considering I have taken down one of the tournaments for 10k a different year, yet only had 60% of myself after swapping 2 X 20% and was in the red prior to the score (swings of often 2k/day during those 5 days...).

- Worst White Ram weekend : last summer, -2000$. Painful as I had made a deep run in the main event, only to min cash it after a frustrating coin flip loss. Tilting experience, as the caliber of play during the White Ram is horrendous.

- Best summer of exclusively live play in 4 months : 25k. I use to spend more time at the casino, nevertheless averaged over 50$/h that summer . The games were better, my LAG style crushed and I obviously ran over EV. This was the summer of the Gold Rush, so action was not lacking.

- Worst live suckout seen : 3 way all-in on a Q82 flop. Player1 has the flush, K10, player2 has middle set, 88, and player3, a station that never folds a pair, has a 2x. Turn 2, River 2 Can you say Runner-Runner perfect 0.1% yo.

I never thought it would happen to me... Never thought I would reach rock bottom... This is what it feels like... The darkness. The weight of the world. Aloneness. Pure solitude. Monstrous, hideous reality.

You grow up as a kid imagining dreams of grandeur, of glory... all this greatness that awaits you, magnified by a child's imagination... but you never, oh never, imagine such a sinister destiny for yourself : being a shortstacker

To lower variance and because I do not yet feel comfortable vs the 100 regs in deepstack situations, I have been buying in for 60bbs and going south when I reach 120bbs... I know folks, I am a disgrace But bare with me, soon I will be the deepstack player you will fear : +550$ in 6h. Good volume as well : 22% of Platinum on 888, 27% of Palladium on Party.

I walked away from the virtual world - and thus my computer -, because, primo, I was bored, and secondo, I was haggard. When you spent too much in the bush, we say you are "bushed" ; in the darkness and the cold, we say "cabin fever"... is there a term for computer screens? +1000$ in 5h. I wish I could say I got away with murder tonight, but it was all standard/run good situations.

I have been contemplating my winter plans and outside of grinding the last few weeks of September online here (once this challenge is done), I have a 10 day meditation retreat in Merritt, B.C., and then will most likely grind down in Vancouver during the WCPC (West Coast Poker Championship). The 2-5 games should be good (they were during the WSOPC) and the 5 day event closure is the 2.2k ME, not too shabby.

So many people that venture into the wild without the appropriate bush smarts/survival skills. I am by no means a typical bush guy, yet always carry a first aid kit, knife, matches and essential survival gear regardless of where I am in the world... This said, there are quite a few idealistic people that come up and want the spiritual experience of exposing themselves to the raw forces of nature...

Week 10, Day 5

Well that was interesting... I 5bet shoved JJ for 190bbs only to lose to QQ Pretty standard spot though, considering live tells and who the 4better was... -20$ in 7h.

Funniest thing ever that happened at the table this week : this action fellow shoves his chips all-in, only to suddenly realize that he had ordered a beer , so he pulls 10$ back, to the consenting hilarity of the table
Spoiler:
he lost the pot and did need those 2 chips to pay for the beer

Finally am ahead of pace for this 25k challenge, and on a steadt trend to reach the juicier 30k+... +200$ in 2h online.

Got this interview published this week : http://www.rakeback.com/poker/moving...ker-in-canada/

Week 10, Day 6

There is no justice in poker. Maybe it is that controlling aspect in me, but God of gods, do I oftentimes wish the pot was pushed towards player1 instead of annoying villain2, to establish, you know, a sorta karmic order to the poker world and put everything in its rightful place... nope... Nope. Nah. Randomness. Pure chaotic uncontrollable force of nature. Poker. Life. Bollocks, I tell you

Finished second in the tournament today (+575$ in 4h) ; crazy how good I run on the MTT felt, yet cannot hold up for the life of me in 400bbs+ pots in the cash game...

Got our first glimpse at the Northern Lights yesterday ; yup, winter is coming (Games of Thrones stole the expression from us ), as back are the darkness and the crispy cold, accompanied with the fall colors, of course :

Even puts Quebec's and Ontario's autumn to shame

+400$ online in 2h. Just playing the 100 Snap at the moment, and God is it ever soft in the summertime... Or has my game improved that much? I am hoping it is the latter

Week 10, Day 7

Changed my mind, decided to make it to the casino even though the expected mere turnout of 8 people barely justified it, if it wasn't for the entertainment factor (love me those tourneys ) and the great structure : finished 2nd, +135$.

Heads up play was quite intriguing, as I had never limped 90% of my hands prior to today, being 40bbs effective Villain's tendencies warranted it though, as he was an agro fish who never folded to preflop raises Since I got no premium holdings in 2h of HU (44, AQo were the 2 better hands) and I wanted to benefit from a postflop edge, smallball was thus required

Murder in the MTT

blinds 200-400, 6000 effective (villain has me covered)

As per usual, I elect to limp in 69, villain checks his option.

Flop (800)
Q103

Villain checks, yet seems interested by the flop... I check back.

Turn (800)
Q103 5

I like the turn, especially when villain checks again, as I feel I can double barrel and get him to fold so, so often... I bet 400, villain snap-calls.

River (1600)
Q103 5 10

Villain bets 600, I raise to 1500, he tank-folds Uncharacteristically, I flash the bluff, knowing that I will crawl under his skin

The very next hand, villain raises to 800, I call with A7. After he cbets on a 101010 flop, I shove, he sighs, calls with Q8
Spoiler:
he spikes a Q on the river, and his KQo > AJo on the very next hand sends me packing

Cool to feel emotionally unaffected by this mini-slump : -400$ online in 3h, -300$ live in 5h (cash game was brutal).

Week 11, Day 1

I clearly remember that day, when I was a 10 year old kid, sitting on the bus on the way to school and thinking to myself : "we still have 2 more days to go before the weekend... Will it always be like this? Will I always be pursuing the weekends all my life? "
Spoiler:
I obviously wasn't a big fan of school as a kid

Considering that the weekdays unfairly outnumber the weekend 5-2, the thought was quite depressing... Heavy... And hard to counterfeit. Yet the equation subjectively changed over the years : when I reached adulthood, I made sure to have some drinking nights on the weekdays, tilting the equation towards a 50-50 correlation

When I quit the kitchen job and started playing poker for a living, everyday became a Friday : I could get drunk at the tables, wake up when I wanted to and didn't have to answer to a boss anymore, bombaclat

And then I quit drinking ; everyday became a weekday A whole new different equation all together, bringing in a different dynamic... But I got happier, slowly letting a certain level of peace settle in me...

I know this equation will further change throughout my life... Perhaps the equation will no longer be seen through the prism of days, but hours... minutes... seconds... Perhaps the space-time dimension to it will simply be eradicated... Or I, as a subject, will no longer question it?
