You can live comfortably in Chiang Mai, which is the cheapest city for around 1000-2000$ per month. Rent is usually around 150-500$ per month depending on location and how balla the place is.

food and booze are cheap as well. Wine and cheese as well as imported beer is a little expensive compared to thai prices of other similar stuff.
