Update 43

This session was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo frustrating! In 68 games I cashed in 10, final tabling 7, which is amazing! However I finished 6th 3 times, a 7th, a 9th and fortunately I ended with a 2nd to save the session and bring it just into profit. I feel I played extraordinarily well this session, but just got unlucky on final tables. Same old story I guess, but it all evens out in the end. The funny thing is that my ROI and $/hour for this session were almost bang on my overall stats, so they have remianed at 16.5% and $5.01. So I had a fully expected session in making $24 Can't complain and it puts me OVER THE 4-FIGURE MARK FOR PROFIT! Woooooop

Games During Session = 68
Profit for Session = $24.03

Update 44

Just played a quick session of 27 games that did not go so well :/ I only min cashed 3 games. Obviously it's only a small sample and I just seemed to lose most races I got in. Although I did outdraw AA with AK at one point...

Update 45

Had a long session, which I felt that I got fairly unlucky on, but I salvaged the session with my last game finally making a 2nd. 93 games and I cashed in 12, with 6 final tables. These finishes were 8th, 7th, two 4ths, a 3rd and a 2nd. Again, I feel I played well and it's just a matter of time until I reach my goal of $1800.

Games During Session = 93
Profit for Session = $34.62

Bankroll = $1305.06

Update 46

Standard session where I constantly got unlucky in the latter stages. I managed to scrape a 2nd and 2 6ths along with 2 min cashes. I'm a bit disappointed with my volume recently, but that is mostly due to a ridiculous sleeping pattern meaning I'm not awake for peak registration times. Need to sort it out.

Hi,

A nice blog u have here, I'm just wondering how many tables u are playing at once?
When I got a free day I'm trying to play the similar amount of games, however I divide it in 2 sessions (25 tables in each session), which takes for me total about +-5h. It seems with your way of playing u are saving more than an hour of time.
Anyway GL @ tables!

At the moment I am playing 16 tables on one screen (tiled 4x4). I started the thread only 12-tabling, then moved up to 17 as I had access to 2 screens with 9 on one and 8 on the other. However, my laptop now overheats (it is pretty old) so only works if I have it upside down so air gets underneath it. So since I can only use one screen, it can only hold 16 tables. Maybe one day I'll move up to 25.

Just a note that when I am heads up in one game I generally stop registering until the heads up is done. Or if I am on 3 or more final tables I will also stop regging until they are done. I'd hope the reasons for this are obvious

Anyway my sleeping pattern is semi sorted and today is gonna be a BIG day

It's currently 11am and I plan to register to games straight through from 1pm to 11pm. Need to shower and eat first. Big session soon. If it goes really well, maybe I can make $500 and complete my challenge! :P

Hi Bazza2103,

Do you think it is easier to be a winning player at these 180-mans then at the 9-mans or 18-mans? Do you feel like they need a different approach?

These words could not be more true my friend I got so demotivated after that last session. Took over a day off and kind of forced myself to play a quick 4 hour session right now. Anyway, I played 49 games and got a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, (no 4th), 5th, 6th, 7th and of course a 12th For what I believe is my 2nd highest session ever. So happy right now. I have the motivation to push on I got pretty lucky in this session to get some of my big stacks. I ran 10 BB/100 above EV so all is good I still feel I played well. Indeed by EVBB/100 was 14 whereas this stat over the whole sample is 10, so I ran well situationally or played well, which is good to know.

For me personally, I have discovered that the 180-mans are my most profitable game. I 17-tabled 9-man SnGs for a bit last year and broke even over about 500 games. I have never played the 18-mans though. However I lost about $300 over a sample of about 1k 45-man SnGs. But I profitted from the 180-man so decided to make a challenge from them. Imo, every poker player has natural ways of playing which are well-adapted to certain types of games so the sensible player chooses to play the games he is most profitable yet. Try different games out and see what you prosper in and stick to them. At least for now anyway. We got years to learn other games. But firstly, I want to make some money from poker so will play my most profitable game.

And yes there is no doubt that these different games need different approaches. The most important thing in 180-mans is to know correct pushing and calling ranges (in other words ICM). There is hardly any post-flop poker play, which is clearly different from cash games for example.

At the moment, I am running 16 tables at a time. And I usually play session of between 40 and 100 games in one go. 40 games would take me about 2-3 hours while 100 games takes about 6 hours.

I have played 2 24-hour sessions also. Those threads are here:

This session was going fairly frustratingly having made 5 final tables from, but persistently getting unlucky to bust them in 4th, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th. I also had one 12th. However, in my final game, I sucked out twice to reach 2nd, to bag a nice profit for the 55-game session

At that time I was 12-tabling. However, between the times of about 2am to 9am registration takes a long time and it is impossible to even get 12 tables up. I recall that it went as low as 3 at one point.

Now I've moved up to 16-tabling so if I ever do another 24-hour session (which I might do soon), I would hopefully get in nearer to 400 games

Update 50

I haven't played for a while because on the 14th I moved out of my uni house for the summer, back home to Essex. Our internet at home is awful, so I didn't want to risk playing. We're getting a new internet on the 28th, so I'll play a lot more then. Anyway, I risked playing a session and I got in 60 games in 4 hours with no internet problems.

Unfortunately, I have no comment to make about how the session went. Let's just say 'variance'.

Games During Session = 60
Profit for Session = -$120.88

Overall Profit = $929.90
Bankroll = $1229.91

Hey.

So our internet at home has been very dodgy recently, hence the lack of any playing. However, the problems have primarily been fixed although the internet may cut out for a very short space of time intermittently once every few days, which I think I can just about cope with.

The months of August and September are the only two in the year in which I am completely available to play the most poker. So in the interests of completing this challenge, I am going to set myself the challenge of making Gold Star from these $2.50 180-mans in August and September.

Some Quick Maths:

Gold Star is 3000 VPPs

You earn 5.5 VPPs per $1 of rake. These games have a rake of $0.22 so I earn 1.21 VPPs per game I play.

3000/1.21 = 2480 (rounding up to complete Gold Star)

So I need to play 2,480 games in the next 25 days. Clearly this is 99 games per day, but given that I probably won't be able to play for all 25 days (let's say I will be completely free all day for at least 18 of them), my target is to play 138 games (2480/18) per day for each of the days that I play poker. This will take approximately 8 or 9 hours per day (16-tabling). I would obviously most likely split this up into two sessions.

So I will update this thread at the end of each day rather than the end of each session, and all of this is provided that my internet proves to be stable throughout the month (and that I don't go busto)

I am also about to play a session now, which is obviously not part of the 25 days, so this is like a bonus session

So let's go!

Update 51 (Day 0 of 25 to reach Gold Star)

I found this session very enjoyable. Typical of 180-mans, it was full of ups and downs. I started off the session continually getting very lucky, but ended with a few bad beats, resulting in finishing 10th twice. However, I did make two 2nds, despite one of them losing QQ to 94 heads ups. I hit quads twice during the session and made 4 final tables out of 67 games: 2nd, 2nd, 7th and 9th.

Looking forward to starting my ascent to Gold properly tomorrow (I'm already 2.7% of the way through :P)

Update 52 (Day 1 of 25 to reach Gold Star)

I started registering at 5:30pm, planning to register until midnight. Remember that I need to play 99 games per day for 25 days, or more realistically , 138 games per day for 18 days of actual poker playing. Registering for those 6 and a half hours, I got in 126 games, so not too bad. I might start registering a little earlier in future to make sure I can reach my goal.

Also, thankfully, the session went amazingly. Now when a session goes well, it means you will play less games in the same time period because you remain in one game for longer. So therefore, I should be well on course to complete my 2480 games in 25 days.

Of the 126 games, I cashed in 17, including 3 10ths!! Of the 17 cashes, 12 were actually final tables though! With 2 1sts, 2 3rds, 2 4ths, 2 6ths, a 7th and 2 8ths So all is good. I got fairly lucky admittedly, with my EV BB/100 being 12 and my actual being 21. (These two numbers over my whole sample so far are both about 11)

So, off to a good start and pretty close to completing the challenge to get to $1800.01!

Games During Session = 126
Profit for Session = $244.87

Overall Profit = $1227.20

Update 53 (Day 2 of 25 to reach Gold Star)

This session was an absolute joke. I am happy with the volume getting in 149 games in 8 and a half hours. In the 149 games, I actually made 10 final tables, which is amazing. However I didn't get a single 1st or 2nd, continually losing hands like AA vs Q3, AA vs 99, AJ vs AT twice just to name a few of the hands, for pots of like 60-80k+. So frustrating, but I guess I used all my luck last night! (Ironic that I actually hit a royal flush tonight too!)

Also, I had severe internet problems in the past hour causing me to lose a few extra chips unnecessarily in my final games. My parents are desperately trying to sort the internet out but TalkTalk are absolutely ****. After nearly a year's worth of complaining about the connection cutting out intermittently, we finally got put through to one of their top technicians to resolve the issue, but he won't be coming for a few days.

So yeah at the moment, I'm highly frustrated with this session which kept teasing me with many many possibilities of big wins (even just 1 would have got me break even!) and also the internet has been rubbish so yeah grrrrrrrrr. Hopefully, everything will be better tomorrow.

Games During Session = 149
