Mitchell part 3


Mitchell's cousin ended up getting locked up and we couldn't go through him anymore. He moved in with me when him and his girlfriend had one of their many fights and her parents kicked him out of the house. They weren't broken up for long and I lived right across the street from her. We spent most of our time playing online tournaments and I had two desktops setup in the same room and we would basically game select by which tournaments had the biggest guarantees. We played on Paradise, Party, Stars, UB, FTP, Bodog and Pacific mostly. Sometimes Mitchell would be grinding some random sites because he thought it was rigged and swear off one of the big sites. We'd have some scores but I would usually spin it back down. Mitchell would always owe me money and I'd often take percentages of his deposits. When he did hit something he'd be transferring me my 1/2 from the deposit and then some more to get our debt lower. Whatever was left went to drugs and alcohol and he was back to square one. It used to bug me him latching onto me and seemingly not caring about making a change. Now that he was living with me it was a whole new level of dependence.

He'd always try to introduce me to girls he knew so I'd lay off him when he was delinquent. I was still into party girls so he'd talk me up and bring them to our place to hang out. They were usually really slutty and I never had anything last with any of them.

I did what I could for Mitchell for years and gave him whatever I had. I never wanted to see him become a bad person or coerce him into doing anything wrong. With that being said I couldn't continue on this way. What I did next was outline for him ways to make money. I related my own past experiences with his current situation and gave him ideas as to how to go about it. He wanted financial independence he just needed a nudge in the right direction. He had already been on the wrong side of the law but had been pussyfooting around and had nothing to show for it. Once he got the idea things got better, kind of.

Now with Mitchell having his own money he wasn't in debt to me anymore, ever. We had been close for so long he still was around me all the time. I moved out of my place and he insisted we get a new place together. He was playing bigger and had started playing more cash games. He'd play NL 6max, HU, Omaha and Stud. I had always looked up to him in poker and I tried to emulate him. Mitchell advised that I play a stake that I had 50 buyins for online so I started playing 2/4 on different sites. I wasn't losing a lot but I had some really bad habits. For one I would usually quit if I was winning a lot. If I got stuck I would always play bigger and not stop the session until I got even or I busted all the accounts and my deposits limits wouldn't let me play big enough to get unstuck. There were times I'd start playing 2/4 6max and end up table starting 10/20 or 25/50 playing HU or 3 handed. I'd also have these crazy marathon sessions that were over 24 hours where I'd be frantic trying to get my money back. Me and him always tended to do okay in the biggest stakes, partly because games were soft back then and also we probably took it way more serious and gave it out best effort.

He suggested one day that we deposit a lot on full tilt and split the deposit, both of us would play but we'd share our action. Neither of us really had enough money to be playing that big and he said that it'll prevent one of us from just getting unlucky and going bust. I agreed because I thought he was a good player and we put 10k each on the site and decided we would only play 5/10+ and just HU tables. It didn't take long for him to bust all of his deposit playing 25/50 and I think he had the account allin at 50/100. I on the other hand had run good and more than doubled the deposit, I think the biggest I played was 10/20. This small sample went to my head and I decided that I was better than him and I shouldn't be splitting my action anymore. Sending him his 1/2 was painful and after winning so much and it being a wash I didn't want to do it anymore.

I had a scare on epassport where he made a gift account for me in order to make a big deposit and I had a lot locked up. He didn't have enough to cover it but I made him promise to make good on it if they wouldn't give me the funds but it ended up being okay. We would have each other's passwords in order to make transfers in case one of us wasn't home. One day he called me and said he had felted my FTP account. He played on it without asking me and when I asked why, he confessed that he had lost all his money online. He planned to transfer the winnings out before I got home so I wouldn't notice. He promised that he had a cashout and would send me all of that when it went through. He said to meet him at his moms house the next day to get the rest from her. She was very nice about it which surprised me for having to write a check to me for so much. I changed all my passwords and told him we can't do those kinds of things anymore. He understood and apologized for what he did. We remained friends and his mom payed his rent so I didn't have to kick him out.

Soon after that he robbed someone for a lot of weed and was back in action. I had gone on the biggest heater of my life and was game selecting differently in tournaments. I refused to play a tournament that was less than 100k for first place. This meant I would just play Sunday's unless there was a special series going on. The big live tournament series would always end with a 10k but they would have preliminaries that drew huge fields and I would play those. I had no business in those games and was bricking everything. I'd also play too many tables online and be timing out and making hasty decisions.

Once I came home and there was an envelope hanging on the door. It had a letter saying that someone complained that they could smell weed through the wall and that they would call the police if it did not stop. I told him about it and his solution was to start smoking outside on the porch. I thought that was a bad idea but I didn't wanna argue with him. Cops coming over a little weed being smoked didn't seem all that scary to me.

One day I could hear him yelling as soon as I opened the front door. I walk in to see him crouched on the floor holding one of my guns and yelling at his girlfriend on the phone. He was telling her to call the cops and he'd shoot them when they got here and all kinds of crazy things. I listened to him for a while and finally decided to try and take the gun from him. It ended up being impossible, he was too much bigger than me and he was enraged. I just sat on the couch until the situation resolved itself and he agreed to give the gun back to me.

He finally broke up with his girlfriend for good and moved to another state. We'd still stay in contact and he'd want some of my Sunday action sometimes. One day I had a session where I lost and he owed. He gave me a date that he would pay and that came and went. When I asked about it he'd just give me excuses and even try to make me feel guilty for asking for the money. On more than one occasion he'd tell me a sportsbet would get me payed back if the outcome was in his favor. I'd sweat it and when he won I wouldn't receive a call. I'd mention how he won the game the next time we spoke, he told me once that the site didn't pay. Eventually I just wrote it off as a loss and he'd call me to catch up and I wouldn't even bring it up. He'd share his recent poker experiences with me which felt like he was rubbing it in my face that he was holding out. I stopped talking to him altogether and he hasn't made one payment in years.

Like everyone else has been saying. Love the thread, by far my fav in PGC right now. Also, so many similar and relatable stories.

I just got into live games recently. Been grinding 2/5 for a bit.

I wonder if i am playing a bit too tight. How much are you concerned about your range in these games? Nobody has any type of balance with their weak lines. C/c check turn etc... i feel like i can get away with murder and not really think to much about my range and how villain interprets it etc... wondering what your thoughts are about this. Either at your experience at smaller stakes or your current stake.

As a recent player of both online .02/.05 and live 2/5, I can say with one hundred percent certainty that online .02/.05 is much harder.

I agree. I have been winning at a decent rate. $35/hour over smallish 100 hour sample. But watched someguy literally VPIP and pot/pot/pot everyhand essntially and just was in awe at how well it worked.

The 2 hours of playing with him totally made me rethink my game in these things lol

I'm going to guess you are either playing in Vegas or LA because you can consistently play 5/10 and 10/20.

2/5 is prob gonna be soft anywhere you go bc most pros are going to play bigger. The pros who are playing those games are most likely just starting out and gonna be more green.
I'd imagine trying to bluff everyone in low stakes isn't gonna yield the highest return.

I'd like to think this is true but I've actually been really tilted during this downswing. Every little thing has been setting me off and I snapped at some people which I don't normally do. Stress levels are high, trying to do too much etc
