Just thought I would post a goal thread to see if I can reach it.

20 years old/ junior in college studying mechanical engineering

Bankroll- ~$2400
1800 on ftp (memfan378)
550 on stars (ledn378)

Right now im currently playing a combination of 50nl,100nl, 50plo, and 2/4-3/6 lhe on ft and the $10-20/18-180 man sngs on stars.

I also play tourneys usually around $25 and have had some success this summer making 4 final tables and bringing home $4k

I really dont have any true bills to pay since I have scholarships and student loans it would be nice to make some good cash for my wallet.

Right now im beating 50nl at 2ptbb/100 over 35k hands and im down 2.5bi at 100nl over 4k hands.

Before I take a shot at 200nl I want >3000 on ft and success at 100nl over a reasonable sample size.

I still have to have time to focus on school cuz I cant afford to lose them and I dont wanna have to grind 50nl to pay the bills.

Long term after I have my degree and at least a years expenses saved up I want to try to make a living from poker since I enjoy it and like the freedom of working from home

35k hands is nothing, 4k hands is definitely nothing.

Stick to 50nl for another 75k hands then worry about 100nl, play another 100k there, THEN worry about 200nl

It looks like your on the right path. I found myself in the same situation that you are in about 1 year ago and I decided to put poker on hold to keep my scholarship because it was more than I could ever grind playing nl 50 but now since I have graduated and started a full time job in my career, I came back to poker. Working 40 hours a week and playing 20 hours a week, I am projected to make minimum 100k. I don't know many students straight out of university that could do that! Just keep your head straight and practice good brm. I would probably wait til your closer to 30 bi's before you jump to nl100 and I'm sure you'll do fine.

Good Luck

This is terrible advice. Keep taking shots and working on trying to move up. I'd definitely recommend being overrolled for 1/2 though, with $4k at the absolute minimum. The high rake at 50nl is enough to do everything you can to not play it for longer than you have to. Also, you can make good money at 100nl while still playing few enough tables to focus on learning and improving your game. That can't be said about 50nl imo.

hes not meaning to move up after those X number of hands, hes saying no matter how much money you have, play a minimum of those X number of hands per level before even thinking of moving up. So say OP goes on a sick heater and is somehow at 5k after 40k more hands of 50nl....that poster was saying still play 50nl til OP reaches 100k hands total of 50nl.

btw, your advice on brm and shottaking is pretty terrible too. OP shouldnt shottake 200nl til he has like 5k or more and then move down if he hits 4k

I know what he means and I think it's terrible advice. I disagree that he should play 100k hands before he "thinks about 100nl". If you're winning at 50nl after 36k hands, it's more likely that he's a winner than a loser. If you have the bankroll for it, you should take shots. I agree that 100k hands is necessary to realize his true winrate, but I disagree that that is important when moving from 50nl to 100nl. Why does he need to be sure he's a 4bb winner and not a 6bb winner? If he's winning, he'll probably win at 100nl and if not, he'll naturally move down before he goes broke.

Isn't that pretty much what I said? I said you should have AT LEAST 4k before he moves up. The OP said he was planning on taking shots with 3k +500 or whatever. If he's a winner, there's nothing wrong with taking shots with 20BI.

my first shot at 100nl only lasted 9000 hands til my bankroll dropped to below 1500 and i dropped back down to 50nl

but now thanks to huge heater in 50nl and final table of ironman freeroll im rolled to take my second shot hopefully with better results.

Reached 20000 hands at 100nl and my results have been very good so far.

Right now I'm beating it at 5.4ptbb/100. I feel like I have been running pretty well so I wont look to much into that yet. (Would post graph but cant figure it out)

I have taken a couple of 1 buyin shots at 200nl and both of them ended bad. Only 30 hands so w/e.

Im changing my requirements for moving up- I want $2000 profit w/o rakeback at 100nl over at least 50000 hands. That way I am pretty sure Im a winner at 100nl and when I do move up my br will be ~$4k-5k.

At the rate things are going I should be at 200nl by the fall.

100nl: $2200 profit. 7ptbb/100. 33000 hands
200nl: $1200 losses. -130ptbb/100. 420 hands
Bankroll: $3000

So my few attempts at 200nl havent gone so well but I'm confident enough in 100nl to play with around 27-28 buy ins so Im going to throw in a 200nl table in my sessions as long as I have $2800. Hopefully I will start running good and can break into 200nl for good.

100nl: $3150 profit. 7.6ptbb/100. 42000 hands
200nl: $2100 losses. -56ptbb/100. 1900 hands.
Bankroll: $4000

Still running pretty bad at 200nl but Im starting to get more comfortable as I play more and get info on the regs there.

Yesterday I finished 3rd in a $75ko tourny and took home $3100 so now Im rolled to add in a couple more 200nl tables into my sessions so hopefully can get into the green and play there full time.

Also at what level is Pokerstars VIP program>Rakeback+ironman at Full Tilt if I play around 10000 hands per week. Not sure how quickly I would get Supernova.

100nl: $4100 profit. 9.4ptbb/100. 44000 hands
200nl: $1250 losses. -12.8ptbb/100. 5000 hands
Bankroll: $5600

Had a $1600 day in cash games which is the most Ive won in cash games ever which is awesome.

Starting to feel pretty comfortable at 200nl and Im finally going to start playing it full time now unless I go on a bad downswing.

Just took a look at your graph at PTR. You've been losing player (guess breakeven when you include rakeback) for 1.5 years, and all your profit came from last month.
What have you changed in your game?

Yeah I started playing when I turned 18 and I was your standard spewtard/fish who couldnt fold tp and thought I was good and just getting unlucky all the time. I had no br management and would just deposit $50 or $100 and sit with it all on the table.

I found this site and really became interested in the theory and math involved in the game and started studying the game more.

In December I decided to make my last deposit of $200 and I would use good br management and grinded the $10nl and have just kept moving up. Ive also had several big MTT scores this summer that really gave my br the boost needed to move up to the next level.

Right now ive played 20k of 200nl and Im beating it for 3ptbb/100
