1st post, 1st goal: Build a Decent, Steady Income - School's Out This Summer

Hello Two Plus Two community! This is my first post and I thought some personal goals would be the best way to get posting. I hope some of you would like to follow my progress, even if it is just for the laughs, when I fail at new limits or to correct my non-native-bad English. Tips, answers, comments and help would also be greatly appreciated though.

I will try to post new goals each month. I hope this will motivate me, help me learn, keep me from taking stupid chances, and so on. I will also post questions when they come up.

Background
Boring background outside of poker
My name is Thomas, I am 18 years old and I live in Copenhagen, Denmark. I'm currently attending a gymnasium, which I guess is equivalent to a high school in most other countries. In June I will graduate from the gymnasium and my plan, as of now, is to have two years break from studying. In this break, I would like to have a decent, steady income, giving me the opportunity to travel a little. After this short break, my plan is to study economics at University of Copenhagen

Poker background
I was introduced to online poker by a friend with decent winnings. I quickly made a deposit at a small site, on a small network. It did not go too well, but not too bad either. I took a break. Then, in January, I moved my deposit from the little site to Pokerstars. I started playing more seriously. First some NL2 FR cashgames and then some MTTSNG. I started to learn the game.

Fast forward to now: I am still playing NL2 FR cashgames, now easily multitabling them and beating them. Here are my results for the last two days (I do not have more data as I just reinstalled the OS):

I am also playing some SNG especially the 1,5$ 18-man non-turbos. Completely in love with them eventhough I am having some troubles beating them (again sorry for the lack of volume):

I would love some hints on where I could read up on anything that could improve my 18-man SNG game.

Goals
Goals will be colored green when/if succesfull and red if failed. More will be added.

Neverending goals
1) Move up, crush, repeat
2) New goals every month
3) Keep posting updates

"As soon as possible"-goals
1) Build a decent, steady income (let's say $3000/month fulltime to start with)
2) Move up to NL5 and crush it
3) Beat the 1,5$ 18-man SNG consistently

Goals for April
I will focus on my NL2 cashgames in April to build my BR and prepare for, hopefully, playing some NL5 next month.
1) 10k+ hands played at NL2
2) 100$+ earnings
3) Atleast (!) 1 update in this thread every week.

Freeroll
If I reach my goal for April I will give-away 10% of my profit (excluding bonuses and no more than $30) to a random poster in this thread on Pokerstars.

See you out there and good luck to all!

So I started one day early of april and, well, today started as a great wall of ****. Might have been caught up in rushhour playing too many games or something. Premiums got beaten all the time and the few times they were not brutally beaten, they gave me minimum value. Did not hit any sets or anything like that and generelly just played badly. So I took a break when i was 8$ down or something, with intention to play another session, at least winning back what I had lost. I stopped again feeling sleepy and my game got a little off again.

Today's graph 'n' stats

C won: -$0.64
Hands: 2,614
BB/100: -1.22

April's graph 'n' stats
C won: -$0.64/$100
Hands: 2,614/10,000

heres a couple tips

1. dont sell yourself short! 10k hands is not much if your getting 2.6k in a day, make sure you work on your game but in the back of your mind I hope your aiming for more like 30-50k !

2. find one game you like the most and stick to it. If you want steady income one day in the future, cash is prob your best, also you will get a better understanding of the game and become a better overall player than SNG/MTTs (and imo SNGs are the devil, bad for poker, and boring as hell)

switching between too many will effect your performance and therefore results

3. Don't set monetary goals! its only setting yourself up for failure/dissapointment. variance is something you can't control and has a very big impact on your profit margins. All you can do is play your best, learn and improve your game, and the money will come in its own. its best to avoid these types of goals so you dont tie your skill or ability directly to your profits (or lack thereof)

Thanks for the tips, really appreciate it! I know it might seem like I am selling myself a bit short, but this month is really busy for me, and I am not sure how many days I will be able to play a decent amount of hands. Apart from that the goal was also set for me to stick a little with one game. I know I have been switching a bit too much between different games and, as you say, it really hurts my performance. On the plus site, the switching has given me bit of a feel for what I like in poker and what I dislike. One of the dislikes is the variance in MTTSNG, hence why I'm trying to stick with the cashgames for a bit now.

Concerning monetary goals, I agree with you as well. Next month's goal could be something like being profitable at NL5 and getting the silverstar-status on stars.

Again thank you very much for the tips. Really great to here somebody else's thoughts on my goals!

Okay thought about it some more and I think you are right... It is not really a goal if it is something I am gonna reach no matter what. So I will raise the bare a bit and say 25k hands. Not sure I am able to get them, but I will try my best. Thanks for pushing me a bit haha

żo,

I am also finishing high school in 8 weeks, giving a 1-2year break to play poker fulltime and then go to uni. I play sngmtts though. Why it's called "gymnasium" there instead of high school?

Seems like we in pretty much the same situation then Well high school and a gymnasium are not exactly equivalent, so I guess that explains the different names. The purpose of a gymnasium in Denmark is to provide the students with general knowledge and to prepare them for a higher education, e.g. a university. It is not obligatory to attend a gymnasium, some educations don't require you to have graduated from one, giving people the opportunity to go straight to these if they want to. I don't know if it is the same with a high school?

Best of luck to you!

cool, thought gymnasium was like you train in a gym and get tutor'd since you'd be a professional sports person...totally off! GL to you, i started learning poker from 2nl FR, great place to start to learn. Admittedly its less profitable then 6max, BUT its more of a steady climb so less stress :P
