My 2016
Hey guys,
Haven’t been updating at all lately, but I figured I’d close off the year with a final big post that summarises the my journey in 2016.
January – Moving to Thailand.
The first month was an exciting one right away. Late in 2015 I decided that I’d give Thailand a try after having lived on Malta for 3 months. Around the same time I quit Spins and decided to jump into mtt’s after having binked 2 live hyper Mtt’s. So I packed my bags & moved into a hotel in the outskirts of Bangkok, starting my grind with a 4000$ roll for poker. I then set the following goals for the year:
[ ] Win $100k
[ ] Prove to be a winning player at stakes up to 215$
The first month of grinding went very well, I played up to 22$ and sometimes 33$ games, selling action in order to play higher games on a daily basis. Since I woke up early (before 5am) because of my jet lag every morning, I stuck with grinding early mornings for the first month. Almost everyday I got up, got breakfast at 7/11 & then grinded from my bed until sometime in the afternoon.
All with all it was a strange first month, in which I made about 4000$. My lifestyle however was horrendous in hindsight (Little entertainment, horrible sleep-rythm and poor setup), but I enjoyed it at the time.
Just an example from a previous post of mine of how terrible my mindset was:
Last night I had <4h of sleep, got up to grind at 2am and the session went damn awful.
I always have trouble letting poker go after it went really sh*t, and today was an extreme example of that. Basically planned on sleeping all afternoon to catch up for the last night, but when I finally got to close my eyes I woke up to my phones alarm 20 minutes later which was on for whatever reason.
After that I couldn’t go back to sleep anymore so at a quarter past 6pm I decided to make a little schedule to sell % for and started playing at 7pm.
Febuary – May, Joining Apex Staking
Halfway through February I was doing pretty well, but I had started the year with quite a small bankroll, both for poker and my life. After having a bad experience with my previous stable I was very hesitant of joining another one, but after several conversations with my current coach I decided to join Apex Staking. The deal at the time included all Mtt’s up to 33$ and regular Group + 1 on 1 coaching sessions.
As it turned out the timing was great, since right after I joined I went into a nearly 10k$ downswing. For 3 and a half months I grinded inside the studio apartment I rented without any results. It was quite frustrating to see the red numbers increase week by week, especially because I had so little previous experience with mtt’s. In the end it seems to have been a great to join the stable, since it left me no other option than to improve my game and grind it out.
June – A New Apartment and a New Beginning
While being nearly 10k$ in make-up, I had just started adding 44$ games to my schedule. It seemed to pay off quite fast since I won a 44$ Bounty Builder early in June which allowed me to pay off all my Make Up. Right after the bink I went to visit my family back in The Netherlands for 2 weeks, while I was there I got another decent score in a 44$ tournament, followed by another one when I got back to Thailand.
It was at this time as well that I started looking for a new apartment since the previous one was very cheap (125$/month), but also very small and inconvenient. First I considered moving to Koh Samui, a Thai Island, but after visiting it I didn’t feel like I wanted to live there, it was still a nice trip tho.
So when my gf and I got back from Samui I went to visit some apartments, both in the outskirts and nearer to the centre of Bangkok. I ended up going with one in the outskirts since I didn’t want to live in a touristy area, to this date I’m still very happy with the decision. The apartment has a Tesco and a big shopping centre right next to it and is roughly 20 minutes from the City Center.
July-August – Time for an upswing
Having just moved to a new apartment and being free of make up for the first time since February it really felt like a fresh start. I had spent a lot of time studying in the previous months so now it was time to get my grind on and turn those hours into money. Even tho I had a rough start, near the end of July the best month of my short career commenced. From July 24th – August 24th I won $19,647, when I add up the little bit of RB that I get as an MTT player it made for a 20k$ month. Since I had virtually no cashouts since I moved to Thailand this gave me a huge bankroll boost and a much better perspective of the future.
September-October
This was by far the best period for me in terms of volume and life balance. I played over 2000 games in the 2 months, of which 1200 just in the month of October. Besides the volume I managed to stick to the same schedule for the whole period, and since I didn’t go on any trips in the period it was just a solid 2 months of making volume and balancing life.
Unfortunately this didn’t lead to any results however, since I ended up making just a little over 300$ in the 2 months.
November-December
As I wanted to do some travelling with my gf in Europe and didn’t feel like waiting until summer, I figured I’d spend the last 2 months of the year In Europe. It’s been a busy 2 months with little poker (1300 games total), but I had a great time so it was worth playing a bit less poker for a while.
In the meantime I also ran pretty good in the few games that I played, everything combined I managed to make a little over 10k$ in my time in Europe.
Summary of 2016
All with all it was a pretty amazing year for me. Poker-wise it’s been a huge step up, both in understanding of the game and in results, and my life has also dramatically improved. I feel much happier and have a much clearer view of where and who I want to be in life. I’ve learned a lot and met a lot of great people, definitely feel blessed to have had so many great times and experiences.
As for my goals, they were very lofty and unfortunately I couldn’t live up to them:
[ ] Win $100k – My sharkscope currently shows 32.600$ excluding Rakeback.
[ ] Prove to be a winning player at stakes up to 215$ – I changed my goals from moving up as fast as possible to grinding out a more steady profit at lower stakes. Right now I’m playing all games up to 55$, so I still have a long way to go to grind 215$ games on a daily basis.
However, despite failing my initial goals I definitely don’t view the last year as a failure in any way.
Biggest Scores of the year
1. $11,979 – $22 Double Deuce – 22/08
2. $7,732 – $44 Bounty Builder – 04/06
3. $6,099 – $44 Bounty Builder – 24/11
4. $5,269 – $33 TPSKO – 19/12
5. €4,186 – €50 Sunday Warmup – 28/11
2017 – The 100k$ goal
I’m currently in Warsaw to celebrate New Years, when I get back to Holland I’ll spend the last 2 weeks playing a bit of poker and seeing friends before I head back to Thailand.
Back in Thailand I’ll pick up my old schedule again, which means getting up early and grinding during the day, 4 or 5 days a week. I’m hoping to add higher stakes, up to the 109’s, sometime in the near future since there’s a handful of soft ones in my schedule, and then I’ll probably try to grind those games out for the rest of the year trying to maximise my ROI with some peak-grinding during big series.
As I’m currently up over 40k$ over the last 6 months, I still have a (delayed) shot at getting 100k$ in 12 months time (June ’16-June ’17). It’s still a long shot but I’m very motivated to give it my best, to be continued…
Oh and have a good NYE guys, hope you all have a great 2017
