GL OP, subbed. Two things based on my attempt at the same challenge last year:

- The monetary goal is a bad idea and could seriously warp your expectations and understanding of variance if you don't already have an extremely solid mental game.

- You probably stand a better chance of making $100k if you don't play $35/$60 180s at all.

Challenge is def doable if you game select right and keep up the grind, so best of luck with it. Hope you do better than I did!

I know its gonna be really tough but thats the whole reason i opend a thread.

I've seen statistics that show a large group of randomly selected winning 180 regs can end up -$40k in them over a sizeable sample, and I can only think of two players (one is widely considered the best 180 reg in the world and also plays at off-peak times, the other is one of the best MTT players in the world) who have >10% ROIs in them, and even those aren't with a sample size big enough to really be conclusive.

Basically, because of how few of them run, almost no-one is able to play a big enough sample of them to work out their true ROI, and they are really high variance games where about 60-80% of the field are solid regs, even more so at peak times. Obviously play them if you want, but considering how long it could feasibly take to actualise any edge you might have, it's probably not worth it, because by the time you realise "yay, I have a 6% ROI!", you'll probably have been through some pretty insane swings, and no-one needs that. Not to mention, a lot of guys who crush the lower 180s just don't have positive ROIs in 35s and 60s. One reg who made $100k from 180s in 2011 (everyone probably knows who I mean) has one of the biggest samples of 35s and 60s, and he's only up $1.7k or so. That's the difference between winning a 35 and bubbling it.

Good post. Within a 1000 game lolsample I've had multiple 8k up and down swings. And that's months worth of games and not anywhere near a meaningful sample. Even if you do determine you have a ~10% ROI, that's tree fiddy a game and you can get close to that in the lower buyins without the heartache of disgusting swings.

I have a question, i am grinding 45 turbo sng's atm but since i have a fulltime job it is hard to make volume, is it a good plan to mix in 180ers since there's more variance in these one i guess you need more volume? Can you give me any idication on volume needed?

The thing with 180s is that the variance is just sick and you will casually swing 100-300 buy ins and with low volume you need ages to grind out downswings, so if i had not that much time to grind i woud probably stick to 45s and mix in some 18s.

my new years evening and the following days were really nice, i had a lot of fun. Im not going to write a long tripreport about this because this is my poker goal thread, just some cliffs :

-really really drunk.
I came back on 4. january and ive played a couple of games since im back. The results are good, but coud have been way better. I binked 4 45s, got 2nd in a 3$r and 8$ and ive binked 2x 2$ 180s. The only thing im worried about is my volume. In november and december i had no problems to grind 200 games on everyday i grinded and now im getting bored after about 100 games and stop registering. Im not sure why this is so but i hope im getting more motivated soon.

gl man. just fyi though....assuming i am reading this right, u are going to need to put in A LOT more volume to do this. 142 games is all you've played? u should be playing 100+ 180 mans/day. they have huge swings. with your volume you can go on a month breakeven (or losing) stretch due to variance.

Im running awful.....thats really much all i can say. I cant win a single hand, when i somehow get a decent stack i bus 9/10 and it seems like stars is trolling me hard. But whatever, im doing a lot of studying with different guys and everyone telles me that my game is fine. Swings are part of the game and i think i can handle this. My volume is still lolbad.....

Dont play in sets !!! if u play in sets your table count is low all the time which is not good for you hourly.
