IMO this idea of "if you are smart enough to play poker for a living you could also excel in a corporate job" is super flawed. Given the current economy in most countries it isnt just that easy to finish college/uni and get a job which pays you 50k+ per year.

Besides the fact that not everyone wants to grind a ****ty 9-5 job you can also contributing to society by giving some of your earnings to charity if you wish to do so.

What are doing athletes for society besides entertainment value? IMO poker players are in that sense pretty similar to them.

Re: 10,000th Post: SNE 2012, Jdawg91 Style (+ more!)

If you stipulate that pro poker players help facilitate games going off, then poker players offer as much to society as actors or athletes. Gambling may be viewed as a vice by a lot of cultures but people are spending their money to be entertained the same way they do when they go to a movie or ballgame. And not everyone entertained is losing money in the process. Poker has become a spectator sport in the last decade.

But it's not an exact comparison because games would still happen wo pros (just go off less often). I guess movies and ballgames would still happen without pros, we'd just be watching pickup games and homemade youtube movies.

Poker is strategic game to be studied as much as it is a way to gamble. Poker pros have made some advances in game theory and probability and it can be argued that playing poker is an artform that top pros are taking to another level.

But who gives a **** if your job doesnt contribute to society. People have more to offer to the world than the activity they do to earn a living. Having a job where you can earn large amount of money in a short time period on your own schedule makes it easier for people to donat to worth causes and spend more time volunteering and being a better husband, father, friend, etc. Not that many players take advantage of that but that's on the individual, not the profession.

This. Coming from a full time player myself, I feel playing full time allows me to contribute to society in ways that I otherwise couldn't with a 9-5 job.

First and foremost, it allows me to work my schedule around my wife's, spending more time with her which nurtures a relationship. Secondly, it allows me to drive my 85 year old grandmother to her daily/weekly activities that would otherwise be difficult for her to attend. Thirdly, I am available to babysit my nephews durin the day so my sister-in-law can get things done that benefit society that she otherwise wouldn't be able tondo without a free day time sitter. Lastly, I earn income which gets poured back into the US economy and by doing it in this fashion, leaves a job opening for someone else that needs that job to support their family rather than working two lower paying jobs or simply collecting unemployment/welfare.

There aren't enough jobs in the US to support the number of people that wish to work. By finding an avenue to earn income that doesn't deduct another job from society could be argued that I contribute significantly more than most of the positions being implied in this thread as an alternative to playing poker.

Yep I'm backed for $20s-$100s on Merge, I add in a few $5s/$10s on merge too that aren't covered on stake. I'm also not backed on PS anymore and just sold out a bap for some PS sng action and took as much as I felt comfortable taking (only 30% this time), so I'm slowly working towards getting on my own BR, I'll continue to sell SNG baps on PS and continue taking larger %'s of myself as I go obviously.

I'm hoping by the time that my 15k game SNG contract ends on Merge for $20s+ that I'll be able to afford to BR myself up to $20s and be backed for just $35s-100s. Slowly getting there

    ___________________________________________

Just wanted to update and say that I did accept my offer with sitnogrinders.com, I'm pretty excited about this new opportunity, should be fun .

I'm hoping that I don't have to do many live action vids of Merge ST's, but would rather have my video's be related more towards a lot of stuff that was suggested itt, but we'll see what happens!

I will obviously keep this thread informed with what plans are in store for me wrt working for them, not sure exactly what my first project will be, will have to figure that out with Pete.

Also, with the whole "poker players contributing to society" discussion, I hate taking part in these discussions mostly because I'm a pretty non confrontational person and just enjoy getting through life without getting in arguments over topics like this, so I don't really have anything to add to it tbh. If I were asked to write an article about this topic, I don't think I'd be able to do it lulz, what a fail. I agree with a lot of what Ruse and Blake just wrote though and I also think that a lot of people are idiots if they think what they're doing for a living (not naming specific jobs obv) is doing anything more for society than me sitting at my computer mashing buttons .

Anyways, I'm about to go get on the grind, I'm kinda shocked I'm not more tired than I am, only got 4 hrs of sleep yesterday and then Yoko came over last night and didn't leave my place til 6 and I had to be up at 11:15 for the hot 75 at 11:30...finally weening myself off sleep again, had gotten into a nasty routine of sleeping 9-10 hrs a day. *** that ldo!

    Gla on the grind!

Hey jdawg, mind if I ask you a question?

Knowing our opponent is going to be shoving atc from sb, what would you call with in this situation.

      Poker Stars, $6.71 Buy-in (50/100 blinds, 10 ante) No Limit Hold'em Tournament, 3 Players
Poker Tools Powered By Holdem Manager - The Ultimate Poker Software Suite. View Hand #13713132

      Hero (BB): 722 (7.2 bb)
      BTN: 106 (1.1 bb)
      SB: 2,172 (21.7 bb)

Preflop: Hero is BB with a relatively good hand.
BTN folds, SB raises to 2,162 and is all-in

        Tyty sir ^

Yea theres more to the Merge story than I'm shedding light on, still am owed a lot of money from the network, I'm sure I'll see it by the end of the month but still not good. Games are clearly tougher at higher stakes than on PS, like $52s and $100s on Merge are certainly tougher than $60 and $100 hypers on PS, I just happen to be better at the 10bb/no ante structure than the PS structure. $5s and $10s on Merge will have like 5-6 regs/semi regs per game, like $7s on PS simply have like 5 complete randoms in almost every lobby.

Anywho, put in a big grind today on PS and about to get in some more volume in a bit too. Started off the day well but ended up giving it all back :P

Also am selling an MTT package this weekend, buy buy!

Hey dude would you mind saying what percentage of your br you might have tied up in games at any one time? I don't need exact numbers, just curious as to how much to fish at one time. I know 100 buyins might be the norm butdepending on how many tables a person plays at a time obv they are exposed more. Thanks and gl!

nope, norm is 200 for small stakes, 300-400 for midstakes, 500-1000 for highstakes
