Poker Is Good For You: Managing Risks Poker Is Good For You: Managing Risks

Hi Everybody,

In Characteristic 5 we wrote: “Life is intrinsically risky, and learning how to handle risk is an important part of growing up. Poker teaches you to think of risks and rewards before acting.”

In Characteristic 26 we got more specific. We briefly discussed the way poker teaches you to perform risk-reward analyses. We also pointed out that many people make costly mistakes because they don’t thoroughly analyze the risks, rewards, and probabilities. Take a mistake you made about your work, investments, or relationships (not poker).
• How could poker-type thinking have prevented or reduced that mistake?
• Why didn’t you think that way?
• What will you do differently the next time you have to make a similar decision?

In many other threads most posts are theoretical and impersonal. I'm not surprised because I have repeatedly written that poker players tend to be anti-introspection. We are much better at reading other people than at looking at ourselves.

That's why a major theme in my writing has been LOOK AT YOURSELF. So take a look at one of your mistakes and answer those questions. The feedback from the rest of us can help you to avoid similar mistakes.

Regards,

Al
