You get what you deserve for stacking off with a dominated hand like an idiot.

The blanket statement that "More than 300 is a lot to risk at one game of Texas hold them" is pretty much garbage. Ever hear of a $2/5 game? We also play larger games than that.

A better question might be "where's the card room you play in?"

Rec 1/2 player here who is thinking of taking a shot at 2/5. About me...

I'm a player who mostly plays on the weekends. When I decided to take poker seriously, I granted myself a 4K bankroll, which I've run up to a little over 10k. Admittedly, my results tracking in the beginning was spotty in terms of total hours, but the money total is spot on. Since I've begun meticulously tracking my result in March I've "achieved" a $8.52 hourly in 236.5 hours played. I guessimate before that I played around 120 hours. I do not include promos, comps and tourneys in my results*. I'm only interested in measuring my cash game skills. My tracked hours are evenly split between my home casino, the Horseshoe in Hammond, which has a 5+1 rake with a 200 dollar max buy-in and Las Vegas (various rakes, buy-ins). Ironically, I feel like I've improved a lot this year, but I know my hourly has been lower, which I mostly attribute to variance. This year I've studied videos on DC and listened to a lot of Bart Hansen's podcasts, which has helped me with thinner value betting and folding. Additionally, when I sit down at a 1/2 table I often feel like a best and most aggressive player. That said, I'm not prefect and I can always find room for improvement.

So, I guess my question is - I know the sample size is small, but do you think it's like I can be a winning 2/5 player? How do you think a $8.52 hourly will convert to 2/5? Again, I realize the sample size is small.

*I won a WSOP tourney circuit seat and binked 16k in it. I also won 600 dollars in a vegas free roll tourney. Plus, I've gotten some high hand payouts in vegas. But again, I don't include that.

Yeah dude give it a shot. Carry the confidence from 1/2, it is as important as anything. Congrats on the circuit score.

Personally I hate this idea of "taking shots". If you are a regular in a room then you should know by now the biggest winners and the biggest losers in the room. For me it's simple, if the bigger game is better than the smaller game (and my roll permits) I play the bigger game. If the smaller game is better I play that.

To me the whole notion of taking shots is so ego driven that people lose sight of the fact that just because you may play regularly at a higher limit that sometimes the games you are playing in at that limit are worse than a limit right below you.

Don't take shots, if you're rolled for a few different levels, walk around the room look for the best game and sit down at it.

Cheers Mac

You are more than rolled to start playing 2/5, and imo you are giving up a lot of money if you continue to only play 1/2.

if you feel outmatched or increased stake is causing you to play scared/sub optimal, then drop back down and begin working on increasing your tolerance. It won't take more than a few winning sessions, which will come sooner rather than later, to gain the confidence to make 2/5 your main game. the difference in skill set you currently use to beat 1/2 won't be much different than what it will require to beat 2/5.

While most of what kosh said is true I must warn you that $8/hr at $1/2 over less than 1000 hrs is easily in the realm of a losing player on a heater. Maybe not but you likely have some major leaks. I think it's fine to take those shots at te bigger games but you need to really focus on figuring out exactly why you're not beating 1/2 for 2-3x your current win rate because when the shoe drops (if it is just run good) you're going to really feel it at 2/5.

Good luck though. You could be a crusher running bad and 2/5 may be just fine.

An $8 hourly doesn't bode well for 2/5. That being said you may just suck at 1/2 (no offense) and perhaps you will do better at 2/5. Just take a shot or two and see how it goes.

But if he has never played or beaten 2/5 then he should just take a few shots rather than commit to it 100%. I do agree in general about how players play higher due to ego (myself included at times) when the lower games may actually be more profitable. But in general at a big casino like Hammonds a good 2/5 player should be way more profitable at 2/5 than 1/2 nearly 365 days a year.

If he barely is a winner at $1/2, how do you expect him to be a $2/5 winner at a better clip?

That said, at $10k rolled up, I agree - take a shot. If you feel like you're not the best or 2nd best player at any point, get up. If you can't find another $2/5 table where you are the best or 2nd best player, step down to $1/2 again.

$8/hr win rate at LIVE casino $1/$3 cash games vs mostly rec-fish??

IMO, need to improve win rate / fix leaks at $1/$3 before doing anything else.

Yes, it's unlikely but possible just because the games play differently.

If you play optimally it is. However if you are only making $8/hr at 1/2 you aren't play optimally so it is certainly within the realm of possibility.

So if you aren't playing optimally in 1/2, you should move up because higher stake will make you play optimally?

Not at all. But your suboptimal play at 1/2 may be less suboptimal at 2/5 or 5/10 :-)
