Yeah.

I mean if your bankroll doesn't grow when you win. Eventually you will go broke...

Risk of ruin should go down the more you play and yield EV.

I know that the standard bankroll rule for NL Hold'em is 20 BI for the stakes that you play. Here's my dilemma:

The local casino in my area does not spread a 1-2 NL game, 2-5 is the lowest stakes (and as an aside, yes it is awesome because it plays like 1-2 because it's the lowest stakes here). They also have a peculiar rule that the buy in for this game is $100 min to $300 max (yes you read correctly, $300 max for a 2-5 game). Now typically for 2-5, I would think that you'd be buying in for $500 (if not more), which would mean that you ought to have $10k (if not more) to be properly rolled for that game.

In this particular game, where the max buy in is only $300, would then $6k become sufficient to be properly rolled for this game, or would you still want $10k plus?

I have a day job, and so I won't be short rolled for the game either way. However, I want to be serious about tracking my sessions, and do want to keep my finances separate, and I'm trying to figure out how much money I ought to set aside for this. Thanks in advance for the replies.

6k seems plenty. 8k if you doubt your game

6k is more than enough, especially with the BI capped at 300. I read some people here playing with 2-3 bis for their limits who run good and now have a decent BR. Variance can be a ***** but with your 20bi br and a job to add more funds if needed you should be fine.

20bi is more than sufficient. If you're a winning player it's unlikely you'll lose 20bi even with it being $300 capped.

The key is that "you" have a day job. So you could play with $1500 or even less as risk of ruin doesn't really matter because you have money on the side coming in to pay bills.

If your sole income was from poker and had $1000 or more in monthly expenses then 6k would not be nearly enough.

how many angles can you balance on the head of a pin??

you are asking the same question in regards to bankroll requirements.

what is your hourly win rate?
are you a winning player?
becoming a winnar at pokerz doesnt happen by accident?
in general people that ask "how many bi do I need for x" need an unlimited roll b/c they can't beat the game

just a heads up

It's more like 5-7bb per hour in live not per/100hands. Per/100 you would be looking at something like 17-23bb/100.

So I've recently taken poker seriously in the last few months (around 6 months).

I'm just curious as to everyone's thoughts on my situation is.

I'm studying in a university right now and am pulling a part time job. I have an account on partypoker with about $150 in it, playing mostly NL10 but I've found my true game at the 1/2 No Limit at the casino. The only problem is bankroll management. I'm thinking I should have at least $2000 to have a playable bankroll. The only problem is I hardly have a single buyin to spare (I like to save, in case my car breaks down or something).

I would love to grind it on partypoker until I make $2000 and then withdrawl and play live, but as everyone knows, online games are much much tougher and even at +5bb/100 hands that's going to take forever. So should I save up my paycheques and play whenever i have $200 extra spending money from the 1-2 months of working? or should I just give poker a long break until I have $2000. Any other thoughts are welcome too. Thanks.

$1/2NL 50min 200max

Net Win $3,529.00
Hours Played 77.9
Hourly Rate $45.32
BB/hr 24.6

Running good? I had two 10 hours sessions +$1000! Been having really soft tables.

How many hours is an accurate sample size?

I think playing when you have a spare 200, after 1-2 Months of work is a bad idea because in any one session there is more luck involved then skill. Long term is where skill is king. I would either grind up online ( its still poker) or just take a certain amount of money from each paycheck and seperate it and build up a poker bankroll that way.

Plus, online you see 2-3x the hands which is 2-3x the chances to make more money!

Just posting an update from my previous post around January.

Ended up having a losing two months during february and march.. lost a total of $522. Ended up winning $1,309 in April and so far $2,284 in the month of May.

I think my leak as far as my poker game is playing tournaments.. I've played in 6 tournaments since 09/11 and lost $1,242 sadly never cashing.. They've all been multi-table tournaments (3 of them were $125k guarantee pools) and I feel that even though I haven't cashed in any of the tournaments that I haven't played that bad.. however the lack of results is definitely discouraging.

Anyways, here are my stats since 09/11:

ALL POKER
Sessions: 130
Hourly: $27.82/hr.
Hours: 474.33
Profit: $13,196

Cash Games Only
Sessions:124
Hourly:$31.27/hr.
Hours:461.75
Profit: $14,438

not cashing in 6 MTTs is nothing to get discouraged about.

That is amazing. Assuming good game selection, high skill level, and 100BB cap the top 5% of winners (aka <1% of the player pool) will have a true WR of ~10BB/hr or ~$30/hr @ $2/3.

So, you are essentially in the top .001% of players assuming 1000hours+. However, I suspect you have a small sample size, faulty record keeping.. or a combination of the two.

It's terrible. Quit poker.

I mean really? Thinly veiled brag/serious sample size issue.
Don't even think 50 is possible at 2/3

So what is the total amount of hours? If its less than 1000 then its fairly meaningless and even 1000 doesn't give a true winrate only a good estimate.
