I started playing FR NLHE last month full time (2/4, mostly on FT), and am having second thoughts about it. My original reason for switching to FR from 6max was because my final goal was to be more comforable playing large buy-in tournaments (which is mostly FR), and because 6 max is a subset of the FR game, so I would be getting better at both. Also, I'm still learning the game and figured FR would be a good place to develop the overall NLHE game. But now, I'm starting to think FR has a few major disadvantages:
* Win rates seem to be lower at FR vs 6max (assuming you are a good player), probably because you VPIP fewer hands. And you really don't play that many more hands per hour. Maybe this is offset by the fact that you can play a few more tables in FR than 6 max. But it seems to me that a good 6max player can make more than a good FR person (per hour) - let me know if you disagree with this speculation.
* There are probably twice+ as many 6max tables as FR tables, and this is especially important as you move up as there are fewer tables overall and so you have better table selection.
* There seems to be more "action" in a 6max game (the average pot is much larger than in FR, even though FR has more participants).
So I'm just curious why you online FR regs play FR. I'm trying to decide if I should stick with it or move back to 6max. I can always enter tournaments on the side for practice. Thanks for the feedback.
Since you're already a cash player switching from 6 to FR isn't going to improve your tourney game at all/if that much. If you want to improve your tourney game just play tournaments.
I started as a tournament player, so when I switched to mixing in cash, FR was an easier transition. However, I agree with VINNY, that learning FR cash isn't going to help your tourney game that much. MTT's are more about adjusting to various stack sizes at the table and learning to play with 20-30bb effective stacks. FR cash doesn't help much in this regard.
So in other words, if you are profitable at 6max, then I would recommend just staying there. Then if you want to learn MTT's, maybe read some books or post in the MTT forum's etc.
I still think full ring is softer than 6-max. That and it is less stressful to play the same amount of hands in an hour at FR than at 6m. For me at least.

lol so to improve ur tournament game u move to full ring ? heh how about play some mtt sngs rather ? or how about tournamnets ?
imo 6max game improve ur game much more cos u need to read better etc also i think 6max winrates are definately bigger /100 and its not just hands /hr obv. and 6max is fishier then fr imo coz of what was said, better selection and better fish/******ed reg ratio.
i wonder is anyone 24tablign 6-max ? i'm definately thining about it but i didnt play it for a year.
I'm not saying FR is the same as tournaments. I just wanted to be more comfortable on a 9 person table - the dynamics, hand reqs, etc are different. I hate actually playing tournaments because I get blue balls from doing okay for a long stretch and not cashing (in mtts), or cashing but not winning (1 table sngs). So as a money maker, I prefer cash games. But I do want to enter some of the larger tournaments eventually on the side. But yes, I do realize the best tourney practice is to play touneys.
I'm just finding that in FR there isn't a lot of action, even when it gets down to 6 handed. So I don't even think it's helping my 6max game. I suppose this makes it easier/less stressful to multitable (also less drawdown potential), but this also makes it harder to make money, no? I'll probably give it another month or two. My sample size is small, but my win rate was better when I played 6max. But maybe I haven't found the right mix of plays in FR, which I'm tinkering with.
The better tournament players are very good in very short handed and HU.
9 max don't help for donkaments, only for the 2-3 first level where you have a large stack compare to the blinds. But that is not here you can win the tourney, only lose it.
After, you just need to steal a lot, reshove and pick your spots. 6 max help a lot imo.
FR are only for the nits who cant play SH or who love FPPs.
