I bet like 66 bucks or something. The turn came like a 5 or something and checked (to tarp obv). Marc, being the SOB that he is, checked back. The river came K and I bet like 150 and he shoved over the top of me. I called and he had JJ. My original thought was "lol, what a donkey." Then I realized later what had happened. That hand really helped my progression into thinking a lot more deeply about the game. I will try to pull up this HH later.
Can you expand on this some more?

He turned a hand with a ton of showdown value into a bluff. Calling is profitable there vs me probably (maybe not at the time). But my line looked weak and definately not like AK. It looks like a scared QQ imo, and I am almost positive that is what Marccus put me on. So instead of calling he shoves to get me to fold QQ or AA which I have there a lot.

It was one of those "Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I see what you did there" moments. It was just a really sick play, a play I was not capable of making at the time.

For sure. I think I heard the same thing from several others that were there this summer.

what do you think are some of the intangibles that make a certain person a successful poker player.

for example, i think most would agree that they know people who they'd consider far more intelligent then themselves, but would almost certainly fail at poker.

why is this? has your experience offered you any new insight into what might cause this?

how old were you when you lost your virginity?

rate the experience 1-10

what's the highest 1-10 score you've slayed based on a scale of 1 = john belushi and 10 = tara reid in her prime

Nolan coming through with some great questions.

I think to be a great poker player one has to be extremely focused. One can be extremely smart but they might get bored with poker after an hour or two. I can stay focused for 5-10 hours with no problem. I think that is the most important trait.

You also have to disassociate yourself with money imo. I know a lot of people that could beat the game but they are too worried about the money involved. It is wierd because before I started playing poker, I was a huge money nit. I never bought anything unless I was sure I needed / wanted it. But once you play a 10k tournament and don't cash, or have a 20-30k downswing, you might not realize it, but it will likely change you.

So I would say the biggest difference between these people you mention and us would be general interest in the game, which leads to dedication and the ability to handle volitile swings that they might originally think to be 'crazy'.

why do you start every post on here with a capital letter (even if it's just "Lol") yet your screen name is in lowercase?

18

Probably a 5. It wasn't that good at all.

Legitimately, I would say 9.5. But my mean is probably 6.5 and median probably 7 or so.

It depends. If we are talking about just poker players, I would say a much higher % than a non-poker player. For example, one big tourney score or hot run while you move up can motivate a person to play more / get better. I believe that short term 'luck' can have great long term effects through confidence building / providing more opportunities, etc. Therefore for poker players I would say about 30-40%.

For the normal person, I would say somewhere around 10-15%.

re: having a real job

do you ever think that part of the reason you keep a real job is to stay within the realm of conservative society? i assume its a relief that you can tell people you work for x x blah blah rather than saying you're a big money hustler.

how much $/year would you have to be reasonably sure you could make from poker to quit the job

pro choice/life?

if you had unlimited funds what city would you reside in as your home base for the rest of your life?

do you think there's a reasonable explanation why canadians seem better at poker per capita?

do you think the USA should encourage multi-lingualism?

how much % of your bankroll would you have to lose before you quit poker?

dumbest thing you did when you were drunk?

do you have any brothers/sisters?, would you encourage them to try poker? if you had children, would you encourage them?

top 5 favorite movies, in no order.

baaaaaam.

I have not been to one, not sure it is possible.

Sean Nolan has told me that Boston fits this category... multiple times... go figure.

Just a force of habit, I guess. I really wish my SN on here was ZepHendrix. My original intentions were to just lurk here when I joined, but I outed my SN like a day in anyways. Real smart, right?

It doesn't seem like you a big spender. If you played less and made maybe 1/3 the money from poker you do now do you think it is worth the boost to your overall happiness?

1) Haha, I thought that would be a nice touch.

2) This is a factor 100%. I always just think about how my parents and this girl whose opinion I care about would react to me becoming a pro. I don't think they'd like it, but if they knew exactly how much I was going to make this year playing a few hours a night, they would probably change their minds.

3) Probably over a million. If I ever turn pro poker, I will most likely never go back to a real job unless its way down the road when I own my own business. I would give this a lot more consideration if the future of online poker was more clear.

4) Pro Choice, but I would not be an advocate of this if it were my baby.

5) Chicago obv.

6) I was actually wondering this the other day. It does seem like there has been a big influx of good players from Canada. Maybe it's because there is cool **** to do there.

7) No, I think if you want to live here, you should learn our damn language imo.

8) I am like the biggest bankroll nit ever, so I don't see this ever happening. But I will say 100%. I don't think I would quit unless I lost it all, and I'd still probably find a way.

9) Oh man, I don't even know on this one. I have gone to the hospital a bunch of times, been arrested a bunch of times. Probably should be dead.

10) I have a younger bro that goes to Iowa. He is getting his CPA this year. He is a smart kid but I will not tell him to play poker or try to convince him. If he wanted coaching or something I would probably help him out. My kids can play if they want but it's the same scenario as my brother.

11) Shawshank Redemption, Tommy Boy, Step Brothers, Tombstone, Predator.

12) Blaoooooooow

I believe in a Greater Power that I am not capable of fathoming, but don't really practice religion. I was raised Roman Catholic though.

I basically do not like the government for many reasons. I try not to talk politics because it always just ends up with people arguing about opinions that don't matter anyways. But I would consider myself apathetic in this area.
