General question about Vegas low stakes tables. I recently went to Vegas for CES. I hit the 1-3/1-2 tables because I didn't want to bring a huge roll. About half the players at the table claimed they moved to Vegas to be a 'poker pro.' They were laughably nittish and straight forward. They simply cannot sustain a lifestyle based on their play. Literally none of them were winning players long term.

Not sure this is the right forum, but is this normal for Vegas? Do wanna be pros show up in Vegas and burn out within a couple months? Is Vegas full of trust fund babies who float along playing poker? Do they think it's 2003 and they'll grow into the next Phil Ivey?

Apologies in advance to the mods if this post is not within the scope of llsnl.

Probably better for Las Vegas Lifestyle, tbqh, but I'll leave it be for a bit to see how it goes.

In what rooms was this at? I don't remember ever asking everyone at the table what they do for a living and I do see a lot of new faces in Vegas so I don't assume half of them are pros or wannabe pros. Also, there are guys who are unemployed that will just say they are poker pros because they think that sounds better than saying they have no job.

In short, yes, the 'poker pros' are just claiming they are 'pro' because it sounds cool but in reality, I doubt they survive more than a year. Almost every player I've ever met from 1/2 to 2/5 to 5/5 who claims to be a pro is probably not - If I can spot their very major pre-flop & flop leaks, and I'm not even that good, they can't possibly be a pro.

The only players that I've played against who I thought were pros were very good, kept quiet about their 'pro' status, and were nice and social at the tables. They never ever tapped the glass, talked about strategy, or berated anyone. It was a pleasure to have them at the table, socially. AND I never found out for sure because they never told anyone.

Most good, smart pros trying to grind up are not going to be advertising this even if they start at the 1/3 or 1/2 level. It's just bad business. Those who are are probably just yapping for the brownie points. Trying to be pro and actually being pro are two completely different things.

Poker News had some nice podcasts re Vegas pro players on the 1/2 and 2/5 tables.

In short, it's very difficult. They said the win rate was about $20/hr ... and it's very hard to sustain oneself on that unless you show up with 6 months in the bank. Most pros would want to get to 5/10 asap.
