Yeah, sometimes the straddle kills the action by causing the table to tighten up. Like in 1/3 with 6 UTG straddle, people take hands they would normally limp for 3 and just fold them, people take hands they would normally raise to 15 and they just call the straddle. And when there is an open to $20, a player won’t 3bet a hand they would have otherwise 3bet without a straddle, which might be reasonable due to how tight the $20 opening range is.
That said, other times the straddle is really good for action. You still see a lot of 5 or 6-way limped pots, giving you plenty of opportunities to squeeze the dead money. It can be really easy poker when the table plays a loose passive style and you capitalize by playing aggressive with a tighter range. You don’t have to wait for JJ+,AK. You can put in squeeze plays with hands like AJo, KQo, or weaker.
In my games the straddle is usually good for action so I put it on at every opportunity, in the hopes that I can encourage others to do so. Usually it works and half to 75% of the table will straddle.
