Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but I was wondering what people's thoughts were on raising preflop in 1/2 games. Should I just go with the flow and make it 10 or 12 everytime, or is making it 6-8 ok? True, $7 doesn't thin the field much, but neither does 12, it's not like they're suddenly gonna fold K9o because I make it 12 ... I usually play limit and don't have much experience with nl outside of tournaments, but am looking to start playing nl more/better/more better so just wondering what you guys think.

Raise to 11.5 - it REALLY confuses the rest of the table.

Depends on the table, I will definitly fold K9o when it is raised at all, especially 12 lol.

Vary your raises

raise sizes should be based on table dynamics, player tendencies, stack sizes, etc.

You should generally try to raise an amount that thins the field against you down to one or two others. At some tables, that may be ten. At others it might be 20. Pay attention to how the table is responding to your raises and the raises of other players.

If you are betting 12 and are getting five callers, you need to increase your preflop raise, especially when you have a premium hand like QQ that is much stronger against 1 or 2 opponents.

Make a decision on what you want out of the hand before raising. Do you have a hand that plays well multi-way with implied odds, like sc or small PP? Put a smaller raise in. Do you have a premium hand that plays well HU with a low spr? Make your raise bigger. Always have a reason and a plan for raising before putting your money out there. Now obviously you can't do this consistently because you will develop a betting tell, but tbh most 1/2 players won't pick up on it anyways. If you haven't read Professional No-Limit by Ed Miller and Matt Flynn there is some good stuff in there on PF strategy and SPR.

I think you need to be like a trader/sales person. You need to bet what the table will bear.

this...

if its like a drunk saturday night game 16 is the same as 8.

i make it less in a shorthanded game, or when i open from lp barbecue i'm doing it wider and am fine with playing a smaller pot.

Your raise size PF also depends on position/# of players in pot. For instance, if you're on the button with a premium hand, and 5+ people have limped, you should be raising a large amount (probably $15-20). There is no reason to raise to $7 when 5 people have limped. With that said, if you're UTG, I think opening to $7 or $8 is fine.
