it's not VCs it's LPs, they are investing the money of others who specifically looking for absurdly high risk stuff that could all get wiped, if they wanted a rational investment, they wouldn't park it with a vc
hence the vcs look for nothing but moonshots, i work with a few early stage vcs and they are totally up front that they'll just throw a little bit of money at anyone they think has that 100x potential regardless of how crap the company is because they are looking for 1 in 100 to suceed and that one that succeeds will be more profitable than if they invested in 100 normal businesses without that absurd ceilings but with safety nets

Also the common thread of a lot of these unicorns is:
Exemplary Product
Disastrous Financials
yup, ipoing is how they wash their hands of them so that's more done as an exit practice for the old investors, it's ironic how the founders are often stuck to holding the stock and selling is viewed as a bad sign while the vcs are able to liquidate and nobody thinks twice about them doing so
also, the absurd valuations we've seen in the past few years is because saudi arabia has been so eager to invest and because only softbank would take their money, there was suddenly a single investment firm with a mandate to invest in big tech and a boatload of cash but the people investing it didn't actually own any of it so they were just focused on getting a deal done rather than at a proper price
