DMW you’re probably right. By now, I’ve learned that the industry doesn’t lend itself to a high retention rate. It just seems too hard for most to stay interested long-term. Specifically children who have friends with cooler (i.e. less productive and mentally stimulating imo) hobbies.

also unrelated, since when does one need to dedicate all their time to school? It’s quite easy enough (well at least kindergarten through undergrad) to ace school without it being a priority. Parents and their excuses smh. school is a freakin breeze.

bmf Ah okay whatever

This is very individually dependent. Everyone hits their wall at a different point. I was always told in HS "you won't be able to coast like this in college," but like you, I was fortunate enough to still be able to. Some of my friends though were like "man, they were right, I have to study my ass off to ace this stuff now." Of course, most of them didn't, they just accepted that they weren't acing it and got by. Some people have to work hard to ace school even in first grade. It just depends.

yeah sorry. That is a good point Garick. Not judging, I’m similarly stunted elsewhere.

my point was that for the intelligent, hard working, and driven kids (which is the vast majority) I’ve been fortunate enough to teach they absolutely can dedicate at least 40+ hours on top of that to extracurriculars even in college while getting close to straight A’s and learning all the material. I have several friends do so as well. which is why I don’t talk to them much. It’s just how it is (I think)

so tldr; a surprisingly large # of parents are paranoid that some time spent swimming will inhibit their child from working at google in the future. (obv sarcasm if not obv)

DC looks older because he's so tall

I would make the over/under on avg chat age at 42.3

Probably a reasonable line since some of the more recent regs who are all younger aren’t here anymore

Randy
Big head
11
Tootie
Dane
Duke
Etc

high school in particular is as much a factor of maturity and drive as anything else imo, likewise even college. also of course how much people enjoyed their subjects and actually valued doing well/attempting to achieve

I was the youngest in my year and immature through most (ahem all) of high school and only started doing well in the final two years when a) I'd matured a little and b) I only had to do three subjects and could choose the ones that I enjoyed and hey presto, I started being seen as bright because I was doing things I was interested in.

it's the same in professional life - passion, enthusiasm and determination are the most common differentiators...of course people have aptitudes and talent, but Want it More wins most of the time

feelsbad Miami. :/ Those colluding boys don’t deserve your money.

feelie you are a legend. if I said the same thing I would not be able to fade a lecture from lapi about how wanting it the most is not a substitute for experience. 42.3 is the only correct line imo.

bmf, anyone who enjoys telling me I have no clue how the world works. so basically anyone who’s posted itt in the past 3 months?

Also the herd will measure how your drive & capacity pair up. If everyone is clawing to be valedictorian then the same amount of work will get you vastly different results then the typical high school.

Do you think the 'rents cut out chess lessons so jayden would do more math?

I find out that I’ve lost a client by them not responding over a few week span half of the time- so a follow up may be difficult in those cases.
Oh and people stop dialogue 'ghost' without warning or the slightest sense of shame. That might comes as a surprise if you were raised properly.

Kind of. I'd like to think I've always (and will continue to) work incredibly hard but since time is limited you can't approach everything this way.

So wrt school I've found it natural to put in the least amount of the work needed to achieve the best results (grades). i.e. Working smarter rather than harder

So like 3hrs of studying for me may = 12 hrs of studying for Jayden. Similarly, 1 hr of studying for Garick may = 3 hrs studying for me.

but for valedictorian yeah i guess this doesn't apply. Since everyone's a "crusher". More so like top 3%.

wrt to parents cutting out chess lessons, no of course not. That was the point: it's a bs excuse. For xyz reason. i.e. i was able to crush chess while also crushing school, so speaking from "experience" (thread's favorite success attribute). And also these kids don't have similar goals as I did so the time dedicated is only a fraction of my my efforts.

That being said, i used to think it was a lack of satisfaction. It sometimes it, but I'm more coming around to it largely being out of my control now. but feelie gave a lot of great food for thought for me to keep in mind as well.

qft. came as a huge surprise initially. This applies to a surprisingly large % of people too. i.e. even parents who are very successful at their craft and should know better.

don't do this guys! seriously. ik it's uncomfortable to end things but just face it. :/
