Not sure how many got the reference here - but we can watch 2 versions of their most popular tune which dovetails nicely with our brief topic of best covers of tunes. So who did it better. Cant answer neither!

Starland vocal band

Or Ron Burgundy and Friends

Also @ DOn I am aware of we built this city - but I took a littel liberty as it was an opportunity for me to hate on Styx. Unfortunately for me growing up many people in my age range listened to this and the emotional scars run quite deep. Thank you for understanding

Obviously, people can do whatever they want. It's just strange to me and kind of annoying. Like, people who take comic books very seriously and have be speeches about how it's art, which I sort of get. But at the same time they have no interest in Renoir or whatever. They just want to read about Captain Electricity fighting Professor Ape and act like it's great. It's kind of perverse.

So, with the term "artist," this is a recent thing at least with frequency of use. To me it feel obsequious in one way. Like, I can see this starting with A&R people kissing butt. "This room is for artists only."

On the other hand maybe it is people trying to make the pop culture they consume sound more important and themselves more smarter.

Anyway, they were previously known as musicians, bands, singers. People usually refer to music as music, rather than art. Why has the more honorific term become the default?

Sure, technically, anyone who makes a creative expression is an artist. But it's still pretentious. And many people called artists are just faces chosen to perform the work of others, so they aren't even artists in the loosest sense.

Discussing pop culture can be fun, but there's this certain brand that drives me nuts. There's this show on NPR where they will sit there and talk about a Beyance album like it is Shakespeare and Bach rolled into one.

I normally change the channel as soon as I realize it's on. However I recently heard The Misfits on NPR. I was like, whoa, what's going on here? I really like the Misfits. But, I also think their path to mass popularity is fascinating. I can't think of anything else like it. They weren't even very popular in punk circles when they broke up, now they play the same venues as Kanye West... like 40 years later.

So anyway, it turns out to be this terrible show and this guy is like "I've never gotten The Misfits" and they pretty much leave it at that. And I thought, of course you haven't. It's just insanely catchy, energetic music where the guy says he raped your mom. You're too stupid to get that. Intellectual yet idiot.

You just reminded me one of my brothers has high five figures collection of rare and mint condition comic books he refuses to move in me despite being in constant financial stress and needing help. Super frustrating!

Misfits 1 or Misfits 2, there is a large difference imo.

Is misfits 1 Danzig and Misfits 2 the other guy? If so, Misfits 1.

Though, I recently stumbled on some youtubes of the other guy doing acoustic sets and he is pretty darn good.

I'm not an expert but this is the path as I understand it.

Late 70s/early 80s. Punk band forms. Achieves minor succuess with in a scene that was very tiny. Breaks up.

Mid 80s. Danzig is doing Samhain. I wasn't there, but I think the Misfits stuck a little within the punk scene.

Late 80s/90s. Punk is bigger, and this is when I was into it. The Misfits were a classic punk band like DK or whatever. Also, Danzig the band was pretty popular. Also, James Hetfield was always wearing Misfits shirts.

Somewhere in here, we have Metalica, one of the biggest bands in the world covering Misfits songs. The Misfits reform with the other guy.

What's interesing to me is that The Misfits were now pretty popular. Millions of rock fands were exposed to them, yet they didn't become huge. But...

Late 2010s... NOW the band absolutely catches fire. You see mainstream teenage girls wearing Misfits clothing. They reunite with Danzig and play basketball arenas. You hear them on places like NPR.

As I said, I can't think of any case like it.

I didn’t know anything about them before reading this. That’s super interesting!

Pretty sure the budget for this video was about $7k and $6900 of that was spent on cocaine and hallucinogens.

Just came back from the Mart they have a small cd section still. I saw that Van Hale and Poison as I passed by. I don't think you've mentioned them at all. Sign you're old as both were superstars for the kids back then. I had to pretend to like them.

If not taken seriously then Styx can be a lot of fun

Not surprisingly if you drunkenly say Domo arigato Mr roboto to people in Japan they don't catch the reference

PS skip you shared the same video twice and both times I don't think it was what you meant to share, which was obviously this

The Misfits had more and better pop melodies just about anyone, but live stuff doesn't sound good if you don't know the songs already.

It's a really good choice, but n00bs need to hear it clean.

It's funny how low key Danzig is in the live vid. "I don't know why you're here, but I'm here to go out of my effing mind." Sounds like he's ordering a pizza.

Watched a bit of a live show from 82 just for comparison. You could hear each individual fan clapping or cheering. Front row is about 4 people deep.

I found the clip of Michael "the other guy" Graves. I never listened to The Misfits with him. A lot of jibber jabber in the beginning. But I was impressed by this starting about 1:10.

I think the R&R HOF is kinda silly. The fact that Kraftwerk has not been admitted speaks to that silliness. But I guess it comes down to whether they value influence, commercial success, etc. Here are this year's nominees. Who would you vote for?

I'm very curious how Depeche Mode qualifies.

I love them, but I haven't a clue what makes them rock and roll.

This should just be renamed the your dad's favorite radio station hall of fame.

Soundgarden was quite generous. Thanks to Wikipedia I see they were there with Nirvana from the start.

i dont get all the hate for music. just listen to what you want to. who cares about other stuff. i used to get all pissed off about my mom and country music (granted, she continually tried to compare Brooks & Dunn to Metallica, because they're obv the same) but i stopped being an ***** ass teenager and realized i dont give a **** what she listens to because it doesnt change what i listen to.

I think the definition of what constitutes the Rock and Roll part of the Hall has been liberalized over the years. Now a lot of what would otherwise be considered decidedly not R&R seems to be eligible.

It is a silly thing but somehow I'm always interested in the results.

Picture this: you're (still) tripping balls as the second set of the Grateful Dead show you've waited 6 months for comes to a close. You anticipate some awesome cover for an encore, like Baba O'Reilly -> Tomorrow Never Knows or some trippy ass **** like that, but instead, they phone in a 2 minute version of I Fought The Law, leaving you hanging, and a bit disappointed (even though the experience as a whole was A+). That is my own circle of Hell, and I fully expect to suffer thru it for eternity.
