Case in point...I actually don't think I knew this was a cover

I've posted this before but this is a LCD cover of an early Human League song. It's actually not too different and yet it sounds heavier to me. I really like this a lot and I LOVE early Human League

Spoiler:

Also, Ryan Adams did a complete redo of the whole Taylor Swift 1989 album and it's really really good. One of my favorites

Yeah, that LCD Soundsystem version is really good. Gave it a nice dark vibe.

This makes a decent case but I'm not a huge fan.

Good one.

They were the reason I started playing guitar.
Over the hills and Stairway were the first songs I learned.

guitar, you said guitar

I'm seriously considering picking up guitar. Ima old dude, played trumpet and baritone in Jr High. So I can read music, but no skill whatsoever. Can't sing. Regardless, I want to play Stairway, and stuff like it...

Is there any reason for me to start with acoustic guitar? I don't wanna. Can I go straight to electric and still learn fine?

No reason to start with acoustic. Acoustic is actually more difficult for a beginner because the neck is generally wider and the action on the strings is much stiffer.

Yeah go for electric, it will make it way easier on your hands/fingers in the beginning and you won't want to quit.

I would recommend learning the chords first and different shapes of the chords.

After that just look up tabs of the songs you want to play and it should be pretty easy.

If you want some method, fretboard logic is a pretty good program.

Oh also learn and practice the chords G C D first.

Once you get proficient at this you can play quite a lot of songs.

Cool. My son was taught to play a simple song without knowing any music. He just did the motions, but it sounded awesome. Honestly, at this point, I just want it to sound cool. Maybe memorize ten easy songs. But I'll bare (bear?) the GCD thing in mind.

Since you mentioned Dave, Foo’s drummer Taylor Hawkins can hold his own singing

Yeah biggest thing is to just get comfortable and proficient with like 3 chord shapes and the transitions between them.

After that you can play pretty much anything. After that learn some scales and solo phrasing stuff and you're pretty much set to sound cool lol.

When I started out I played a lot of Zeppelin and Clapton stuff.

If you ever get really into it give the Dave Matthews stuff a try. His songs are more difficult.

Then of course you got like the high end stuff like Phunkdified and Ben Lapps stuff which I never got that deep into.

Bah humbug.
You aren't a musician. Musicians play and record cover versions because it is a big part of how we relate to the songs we cover.

And, if they are pros, they get paid for it.

I'm most shocked there are shades on those doors. Our offices have wide open, glass walled conference/meeting rooms.

I studied Jazz piano reasonably seriously. I had a fantastic instructor that kept me highly motivated. I stopped playing after my accident and knew I was missing something in my life. Approx a year ago I began studying the guitar. I treat it like its my job and generally play/practice 4+ hours per day. I really dig the blues and am fascinated by the acoustic blues. I have subscribed to a few online courses - but they werent quite right for me. I finally found a bluesman (online dude) that both motivates me and his insturctional style really works for my way of learning. My whole point is find out what you want to do and find an instructor that you dig and GO FOR IT. It is incredibly rewarding and tons o fun. However, if you go about it willy nilly and dick around with random youtube videos you will get lost, bored, and frustrated imo ( I wasted a few weeks doing that)

@ Jots - I dont actively seek out greta - but I dig their sound and like that they are keeping that whole vibe alive
