Off the top of my head, I've always liked this cover (think I've mentioned it before):

Spoiler:

And I'm probably in the minority on this one:

Like that Stars cover GG and am good with the Devo cover Squiddy.

The others...not so much

I like most Madonna stuff but don't think her voice fits this song too well. ANd Shatner...well

Just the Devo choreography alone wins.

Bauhaus Ziggy Stardust cover is vg and almost the only Bowie cover I’ll allow.

Not technimological enough to link it

In terms of making the song their own I think Devo still holds it as the moast creative cover. Not only that but they are tight as phuc as shown on this snl performance

Vote for Sqwid! saving the thread for 10 years straight.

This is a pretty good list.

I'll add:
While my guitar gently weeps - Phish
You Keep Me Hanging On - vanilla fudge
She came in through the backdoor window - Joe Cocker
With a little help from my friends - Joe Cocker

Don, you need to, as Gil would say, put down the likker.

Joe Cocker's Beatles covers suck.

Meh, hard disagree but it's ok

Joe Cocker and Vanilla Fudge are among the rare few that can make a cover better than the original, imo

If by better, you mean, "sound like a stumbling drunk with a nerve disorder," sure.

Never surprised me one bit that Cocker threw up on his fans during a show. He pretty much always sounded like he was about to hurl.

Not that I have a strong opinion on this.

Cocker's With a Little Help from my friends is great, I think the song is associated more with him than the Beatles. Also was the theme for the Wonder Years right?

OTOH. Belushi did a great Cocker.

That’s because it’s a Ringo song. Ringo should not have had songs to sing.

Yes, it was the theme for The Wonder Years

Several of these the cover is better known than the original and/or a different cover is better known than the original, so I included original artists in here if anyone wants to compare.

Tainted Love by Soft Cell (Original by Gloria Jones)

Istanbul (not Constantinople) by They Might Be Giants (Original by The Four Lads)

I Fought the Law by The Clash (Original by The Crickets)

Superman by REM (Original by The Clique)

Black Magic Woman by Santana (Original by Fleetwood Mac)

China Girl by David Bowie (Original by Iggy Pop)

And to return the favor, Real Wild Child (Wild One) by Iggy Pop (original by Johnny O'Keefe)

Take Me to the River by Talking Heads (Original by Al Green)

Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood by Elvis Costello (Original by Nina Simone. No, not The Animals. Their version was a cover too.)

I also really like Shiny Toy Guns cover of Major Tom, but it really isn't different from the Peter Schilling original except that it has a female vocalist.

I grew up on Zep and they have bin a major influence on me. That being said they need to make the list as they are in fact one of the best cover bands (plagerizors) evah
