Actually had to Google that one as I didn't know that, looks like it was the bassist (who eventually died by getting swept off a sailboat).

A guy who drummed in a pre-Loverboy version of the band and went on to drum for another local band is a reg in our poker game.

FW - at what point do you finally decide the casino is charging too much for your entertainment? Is there a rake amt that you simply refuse to pay? Or are we in a frog in the heating pot scenario?

I’ve only played about 40 hours of cash this year given all the **** I’ve had going on in my life (+3500, wassup!) so it’s not much of a thing for me any more anyway.

Now that I’m close to the end of the separation process I had planned on playing a little more, but this is a huge deterrent. So I don’t know. I don’t trust private games and tbh I don’t get many invites - I’m not friends with the young refs who organise them and I’m not bad enough to be a VIP in those games.

There’s one rake free 5/10 private game I trust but it’s a 2 hour drive away and it plays too big for my roll.

Mtts are huge here but they’re all too far away and too big a time commitment for me. So tbh I think I might be close to the end of my poker journey.

Good luck Feely. Nothing wrong with randomly dropping into a game when you have the time and energy.

Every other hobby I do costs me money (I obviously do them because I find them enjoyable), so I've always wondered how I would view my poker hobby if the game eventually became such that I could only like ~breakeven at best. I'm not exactly sure. If the process is still enjoyable enough, I think (?) I could convince myself it is a worthwhile pursuit (for the appropriate amount of hours)... although perhaps I wouldn't think that if I was actually not winning.

two weeks ago I had KK from mp so opened to 25

a mid 50s or early 60s nit in a hoodie who's played one hand since i sat down and happened to have a boat very quickly and loudly slapped down $84 when he had about $200 behind and I folded KK

later found out via another reg who talks hh's with him that he indeed had aces and was mega tilted when i folded

currently in seattle, staying with two old friends from college who got married and their two kids

got in right before thanksgiving and still here (but getting my car worked on right now)

they are repeatedly telling me they want me to stay as long as possible (even saying i can stay in their house while they go abroad for xmas which is not something i'm doing but i believe them when they say that's a genuine offer) and I believe them but also am very concerned about not overstaying too long as even though i'm sure they like my company, at some point the constant presence will become tiresome - i always trying to help out where i can and stay under a "roommate" rather than as a "guest" but it's a tricky line to straddle

the guy was my best friend in college and the woman was a friend, i actually introduced them and they met at a party in my dorm (i knew he liked her and warned him that she was coming to hang out so he should pop on over)

but it's great just hanging out and playing catan with their kids etc

flying back east for xmas and new years and figuring those logistics out and possibly flying from seattle, which would entail quite an extended trip here

i can't do dfs nor sportsbet on legal books in washington state so this is the least amount of work i've done in years during this time (I'm still doing some things but not much) and while it's kind of refreshing to just mentally reset, i'm getting a little antsy to get back on the 24/7 grind

starting in early january I'll start making my way south, with possible stops in portland oregon, camping in the redwoods, going to reno, doing some biking on route 1 (one section is currently closed to cars due to a landslide so it's amazing biking and i'm hoping usa bureacracy moving at a snail's pace will keep it that way before i get there)

will then spend some time in vegas (probably going to get a 1-2 month rental at some dump and see how that goes - not being able to do dfs in nevada is not the deal breaker it was in prior years because it's now less than 10% of my overall income) - i'm guessing i won't like living there but there's only one way to find out and in the meantime there's plenty of virgin out theres for me that'll give me some runway

after that it's off to LA to stay with some old friends again for a week or so, from there perhaps swinging down to san diego and then making my way through the southwest with a final stop in austin to visit some old friends who live there

at that point, i will compare the places i've been, along with cost of housing, etc and then go move permanently

denver area is heavily in the lead right now, black hawk colorado was a treasure trove of ev and it's one of the more dfs/betting friendly states so there's a plethora of online options as well

Lolz.

My 17 month winstreak is in jeopardy as my 2024 flatlines to a close. The bad news is that I'm 0 for 3 in December so far. The good news is that I'm only stuck 45bbs.

Yes. That was quite a weekend. Now he tucks the shirt into fancy pants.

that was the Australian Schools champs. My friends' son got silver in the 1500m. Fairly decent genes - his dad was a pro rugby player for a decade + and his mum went to the Olympics in 4x400.
on the other end of the march, I did a 'turkey trot' 5k with the relatives. Nephew Walking, with absolutely no preparation at all, beat me handily.
He was asleep in the car and then woke up and walked over to the starting line and finished #15 in a large field. I never caught up to him.

So it's been one heck of a weekend in the Garick house. Friday as we're preparing to go to an arts-themed medieval event where Mrs Garick is teaching a class for which she'd done a ton of research on embroidered 17th century Persian lady's pants (entitled, appropriately enough "Fancy Pants: A Look at Persian Naqsh-e"), she informs me that there's also a Toys for Tots tournament scheduled. So I stop by the store on the way home from work and get a build-your-own dinosaur kit and a remote-control stunt shark, because they are the two coolest toys on offer.

When I get home, I check my work email, because my editor at UVA Press told me their editorial board meeting was that day, so hopefully my book would get approved for publication. It did! My book should be coming out in Fall 2025.

At the medieval event, I am fortunate enough to win the tournament, the prize for which is a bicycle donated to Toys for Tots in my name. Very cool. Maybe even cooler than a remote-control stunt shark.

Mrs. Garick's Fancy Pants class goes great. It is the highest attended class at the event and gets rave reviews. Then in the closing ceremonies, she is informed that she has been selected for our organization's highest award for lifetime excellence in the arts.

Just an amazing weekend.
Thanks Garick!

and Congratulations !!!

Kind of a strange occurrence last night. Took the Subie to my dealing gig, as it hadn't been run in a while. Part of the route has not been swallowed up by suburbia quite yet, and is unlighted.

Get up there and comment to one of my fellow dealers that it seemed dark out tonight. He agreed, no moon, darker than usual.

Get pulled over on the way home because my taillights aren't lit. When telling me, the officer is shining her flashlight into the car, as you'd expect.

Says, "looks like your selector isn't on Auto." Somehow, I'd gotten it into running-lights only mode.

Well, that's explains a thing or two. Doh!

My wife does this to me when she drives my car. Not sure what the difference is between the always on lights and the running lights only setting, but maybe I'll look next time I venture out...

I don't drive the Subie much, and even less at night, so (obviously) didn't notice that the headlights weren't working.

Before I had my cataract surgery, I had to turn off Auto. I was having trouble seeing in the dusk before the car would turn 'em on by itself.

I assume somewhere in there, I flipped to selector on the end of the stalk. Probably not purposefully.
