Lol, looks like the Edmonton Eskimos actually played for the Stanley Cup in 1923 (but lost).

My understanding is that their initial rename choice was Rough Riders.

You can never have too many CFL teams named the Rough Riders. Gotta spell it differently, though. Maybe Ruff Ryder for maximum Tom Cochrane reference points.

for years, i was convinced that lunatic fringe was featured prominently in heavy metal, it was not, it was however, prominent in eastbound and down

That was a great soundtrack. Spent many a night in college spinning those disks on my AIO FM stereo/cassette deck/turntable high AF in my off-campus apartment in Tempe.

Pretty sure this is the only Tom Cochrane / Red Rider on the iPod, my fingers get tired just listening to this bass line. ETA: Always thought The War on Drugs is currently mining similar stuff; Slim?

Yeah, I'm too lazy to look up exactly what a Redblack is, but super lame name. Red Greens would actually somehow be better / more Canadian.

I grew up on the border. The local radio stations sucked, so I listened to a Vancouver station. Got to know a lot of CanCon artists.

Follow this up with a slightly mispronounced "and what you you like have my Cochrane?" and you're golden, imo.

damn i am completely unfamiliar with red rider but I wanna see where they sit as far as timeline of releases.

im hearing a lil bit of krautrock influence, definitely dire straits and a touch of rick ocasek even. maybe a tinge of late 80s talk talk too - dash of Simply Red even? i dont know, i hear a lot of similar sonic overlaps - will dive into their catalog and pull em up on the discogs.

i know war on drugs as a current group and i was on a whale watching boat off the coast of cape cod with the one dude his parents and that actress krysten ritter. she was ****in stoked i have a video of her screaming all happy and excited when we witnessed a whale breach the ocean (it was ****ing cool). the WoD dude had zero emotional reaciton though - looked like he was somewhere between catatonic and sleep walking. some reasons why that might be but not really worth repeating.

there was a flurry of animated films geared towards adults in that era with excellent soundtracks. i still enjoy the weird synth ****. like mort garson's work and i never saw the movie (i should try to find it online maybe) but if you like jazzy/synth maybe some pop but period piece pop not modern this one is sublime:

I am on a Belgian kick ever since I found an article explaining what their names mean. So far my favorite is the Orville Pale. My New York in-law buys wicked expensive big bottles of Brasserie holiday ale.

Weird part is that the defense has been pretty bad, and they haven't had a lot of injuries. Offense has been mediocre, even with all its injuries, so if defense was dominant like in years past, they'd still be in contention.
that was bad. Although the snow games are the only thing fun about the NFL.

Mostly early 80s. There's a good rundown of them from an American perspective here:

Ordered some shoes from Kohl's online on the 27th. Figured I'd have them ship to store, since it's only about .5 miles away; when I got to checkout, they only gave me the option to have them shipped here. It's free, so that's ok too.

They gave the package to UPS, who gave it to USPS. It should arrive today. Slow, but ok; no need for the shoes right away.

I find this shipping strange, as Kohl's accepts returns for Amazon. Wonder why they don't partner the other way too.

Both versions are on the iPod. BNL's version is surprisingly good (far and away the best thing they ever did, imo, but that's just cuz I find most of their stuff unlistenable).

54-40's (bordertown band I'm guessing you've heard of?) original "I Go Blind" or Hootie's cover? (welcome to my Ignore List if you get this one wrong, imo)

Have not previously heard of 54-40 (great name, BTW. Makes me want to fight) and didn't know Hootie's was a cover. I don't really like either version much, but the original is better. Got a little early REM going on.

I actually like BNL, but yeah, Lovers is definitely out of character for them. I think their harmonies add something, but their lesser guitar takes it back away, making the two versions a wash, but both quite good.

Would have definitely thought you had heard of 54-40, as they got big radio play in 80s/90s (they're actually still around) and they're from just above the border here.

I've always wondered what USA#1 bands I missed out on at the time (ones that all Americans were very familiar with) due to unlikely to be played above the border.

I guess they didn't fit the CFOX format? Though they seem like a lot of the bands that were big on that station in the late 80s/early 90s. I listened to a few songs on the intertubes and didn't recognize any of them. Not really my cuppa, tbh. They have some elements that I like, but they just sound kind of... lazy?

Pretty sure they woulda been big on CFOX back then. You remember Larry & Willy hosts from back in the day? Willy now the morning host on the classic rock station, and I think Larry has some lunchtime gig on the 80s station.

I got my first ever speeding ticket to this song:

ETA: Lol, just realized my goto radio station for live gigs is on your side of the border, do you ever check out the KEXP (Seattle) You Tube stuff?

The only DJ I remember was the guy who used to be in Loverboy. I think he was the drummer, or the bassist?

When I lived there, most of the Seattle stations didn't reach up to Bellingham, which was why I listened to CFOX.

My Spotify unwrapped summary arrived yesterday. Guessing one of you can beat my 66,000 minutes?

(gg, Spotify is a ridiculous new fangled music platform where you pay a small subscription and don’t actually have to buy the music. It’ll never catch on so you should stick with your iPod and gramophone)
