Worked at a theater when I was 16. The general policy was to ask people to be quiet but we weren’t allowed to ask them to leave. They’d rather appease you by giving you free ticket than piss off the other people because movie theaters make their money from concessions, not really box office.
It was explained to me that opening week the theater made 0% of box office sales, 2nd week 10% of sales, 3rd week 20%, etc, etc. considering most movies never make it more than a few weeks, they’re not losing money by giving you free tickets. Plus you’re more likely to use those free tickets on a new movie rather than an 3+ week old movie
