Yeah. Most other hobbies we at least share so there isn't a ton of clashes. WE both play MTG and Boardgames with our group of friends. Poker is one of the only time consuming hobbies that she has absolutely 0 interest in, so she would be on her own when I play.

I appreciate the tips. I usually try to go out once every other week (was once a week, but bought a house so just haven't been playing as much). Found a great group that runs while a lot of the casinos in IL are still shut down.

Thank you for the tips everyone.

I was married to someone previously who was needy and unsupportive of my hobbies. Poker was an excuse but it was the same when playing basketball or insert anything that wasn’t directly involving her 24/7. That didn’t last and I found a parter who is truly a partner. I was upfront about my work / life balance and other interests from the start amd so was she. We get along well.

when the little ones come on board, 'time for yourself' becomes almost the most contentious metric in a marriage for a few years. I managed to hold a 'once a week within reason' habit through most of those years, albeit I never pushed it if it was too difficult.

tbh, I'm still on once a week (plus a little more during the 3 mtt series and a week in Vegas) and I'm fine with it.

obviously if you're doing it for income, either main or a secondary income that supports the relationship, then that's a different discussion

^ this is my boat too.

When the kiddos are younger, but will sleep, I typically won’t leave until after they’re asleep. I’ve also told my wife that if she wants to watch a movie or something, I’ll stay home. She seems to like going to bed early though, so it works out more times than not

i consult growth strategies to tech companies so tons of free time with occasional 100 hour weeks

looking to transition back into product management this year, i've done this a bunch and it's very cyclical

i'll be with a regular company, that gives me street cred and get tons of offers, leave said regular company to consult, after about 2 years i no longer have that allure of x position at y sexy company so go back to working to restore my mana - pretty much entirety of covid been out of mana, huge reason why i waste so much time here lately - but on the positive note i do well enough in dfs to support myself to survive this work lull

ya know I haven't tried one of those Asian-Mexican "Fusions" before. Seems like kinda sharp opposites.

Microsoft doesn’t advertise it but it is built into windows now (mainly for gaming). Hit windows button + g (i think). You may have to download or enable the optional screen recording pack - but it is buried in there somewhere. I think it can handle the audio stream too.

Interesting bit about the cycle.

Can dfs actually beat playing poker for earnings?

So, Michigan legalized online gambling this year. A year ago I could not beat 5NL on an illegal reg infested site that I would liken to 100NL on Bovada in 2015.

I stuck $100 on Stars last week. It's Michigan only. I have been shocked by how soft it is. 5NL reminded me of 2NL in 2010. I ground out $100 and just moved up to 10NL. It's like maybe 10% better, but still incredibly soft. It seems online poker is alive again in Michigan. There are multiple 85/8 whales at 10NL. And no I am not one of them (45/12).

Starting May 1st it looks like NLH will be spreading here in CO. Curious to the effect on the underground scene around here.

i've been very fortunate with dfs, there's a lot of much smarter and more capable people than myself who've dropped out - which is very confusing because i can't understand why i'm able to succeed while they decided to call it quits and sometimes makes me wonder when the rug will get pulled out from under my feet as well - i'll periodically have a really bad downswing and each time that happens will think "ah it's finally happened, the market has caught up to me"

in 2020 got just shy of six figures in profit and on pace to exceed it this year knock on wood

unsure what i'd make if i went back into poker, will definitely dip my toes in a bit in the future but realistically think it'd be an incredible struggle to exceed 50k a year and that'd be after many months of study - i'm talking online though, i still think i could comfortably move to vegas tomorrow and beat 5-10 so long as i table selected - how much i could beat it though remains to be seen

I think if i focused on dfs i could proabably boost income by 15-50% i definitely lose a lot of ev not being online to enter more contests, not having enough time on to spend paying attention to news or not having the time to improve and backtest alterations to my projection models - at least once a week i'll be afk when news comes out that a player was scratched late or a game was rained out where if i were there looking at my monitor in that 5 minute stretch i would have caught it and fixed my rosters in time

also, dfs is really hard to break into because whether or not you play a $1 contest or a $500 contest, it's you 2 other randos and 7 of the best players in the world, there's no bunny slopes available, the scalability means the top guys are literally in every contest so most people just get destroyed when they start not knowing they're up against 5 of the best in the world in their 10 man $1 contest

imagine sitting down at nl2 and it's the same exact pool of players you find at nl20k

What's the betting cap?

I am planning on some post-covid pokah trips.

Arizona, Texas, and Colorado?

Apparently the limit in AZ is now $600. IT had been $500 for the last ten years.

this dries up eventually. i'm in NJ and we've had online poker since 2015. when i play on stars now at 30nl and 50nl it's mostly people playing 25/20 or tighter. there are the occasional fish, whale or maniac, but it's mostly tags and rocks. it's been like that for 3-4 years now.

wsop might be better because they don't allow HUDs and NJ, Delaware and Nevada have shared liquidity. i just don't have stats, so i can't say for certain.

I don't think there will be one anymore. Previously it had been $100 but the limit was on the ballot to be removed. Ameristar is now advertising the following:

6 max / $3 is legit

I might even come out of retirement to play that

Last night fired up the app for the first time in a few weeks. Interest has definitely waned as I’ve become more immersed in binging The Expanse.

Flopped too set 10s and doubles up 2x in an hour. Ez game. First hand they gii with 1 out so that’s nice. Second time he flopped the nut straight and one timed me. River pairs obviously.
