Don't get to retire yet. Staying in for five years after finishing was part of the deal for the Air Force paying for this.

Yeah, Air Force only allows three years for a PhD they're paying for. That's apparently relatively normal in the hard sciences, but in the Liberal Arts, that's ridiculously fast. A lot of schools told me not even to apply if I only had three years. Part of why I chose Purdue is that they have an accelerated four-year program for students who already have their MA, so I was only a year faster.

Close. Teaching at Air Command and Staff College. On the plus side, teaching graduate students. On the minus, Alabama.

LOL. I was wondering how my speed compares to average in the PhD world, and I found this:

Quote:
There are probably few universities that nudge students out the door as rapidly as Princeton, where a humanities student now averages 6.4 years compared with 7.5 in 2003. That is largely because Princeton guarantees financial support for its more than 2,000 scholars for five years, including free tuition and stipends that range up to $30,000 a year. That means students need teach no more than two courses during their schooling and can focus on research.

“Princeton since the 1930s has felt that a Ph.D. should be an education, not a career, and has valued a tight program,” said William B. Russel, dean of the graduate school.
Princeton as one of the "fast schools" amuses me, because they were on of the ones which told me not even to apply. They said the fastest they could do was five years.

For comparison sake my school was debating lowering the maximum from 10 years to 8. Pretty sure the history dept was designed as a 6 yr PhD not including unexpected pregnancies. I thought science had a standard 5.

I mean, it varies a bunch, especially in how much difference it makes to come in with a Masters Degree already in hand. Apparently the average for Education is 13 years, but those are almost all taken by full time teachers/administrators working on their PhD/EdD part-time.

Garick moving to Bama might be enough to move it from the 50th ranked state for education to the 49th.

Congrats, I had no idea it took this much work. How did you find the three years you got for school? My friend just finished theirs and has to go back to active duty now but it was pretty much only school for three years while in the marine corp program

Since I’ve never opined on this before

Sopranos > Better Call Saul > Breaking Bad > The Wire

Shows that are very different but somewhere above The Wire: Seinfeld, Futurama, Curb Your Enthusiasm

I love the too cool for school people who are like,

"Sopranos was meh. Fat guy that eats a lot and talks funny. Don't know what all the fuss was about."

But they say this type of thing for every single show widely regarded as good whether it be Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Full House etc.

Curb is the funniest show I have ever seen, I think

Rick and Morty> futurama

South Park> all other animated shows

When you consider the acting job did while taking enough tranqs to put down a horse...

Speaking of which, I forgot to add Bojack Horseman to my list

Thanks for keeping the dog meme exchange going.

I guess there's poker within 3 hours at the Pensacola dog track, or 3.5 in Biloxi. Doesn't compare to charity games 15 mins from the house here.

Yeah, pretty much only school. I'm the senior officer student, so a couple of hours a week of admin duty, but really it's almost like a sabbatical from the military. Only wear my uniform if I'm on campus on Thursdays, etc.

It's a great deal. The only downside is how compressed it is. Still, to get paid my normal salary, plus a full-ride scholarship is an amazing deal. I can't complain. (but sometimes I still do)

Sopranos is the GOAT show. And it has the best poker content including a hand played by Robert Patrick aka the T-1000 from Terminator 2.
