I've seen today described as a 'coup' on Facebook

After reading Twitter the past year I have determined that we are all fascists.

I can't imagine being against fascism is a bad thing. But I agree, precision of language is a thing too.

That's exactly what a fascist would say.

I am fine calling these rioters/insurrectionists "terrorists" if you also describe those who occupied and/or burned/vandalized city property (ex. police stations) this past summer.

Wolf Blitzer, the Cuomo ****, and Anderson Cooper's inconsistency between defining protesters versus rioters is just as bad as what goes on from the opposite direction from the Fox crew.
Ehh armed people breaking into a federal building with the hopes of overturning a presidential election result they disagree with I think is different than vandalizing city property because cops keep killing black people.

I'd say the former fit more of the terrorist category than looter/rioter category.

It's a bad thing to claim to be against fascism when you and your organization forcibly suppress those that disagree with you. Also, if you call everyone that's not in your organization a fascist, you're going to have a hard time convincing those people to be against fascism.

Yes.

being against a government system led by a dictator who forcibly supresses (and worse) opposition, prejudicially treats large groups of the population and forcibly controls business and industry is clearly a good thing

calling someone or an organisation or political party 'fascist' (and then attacking them or w/e) when they don't at all resemble the above and operate legally but don't mirror your views is probably not to be encouraged in my humble opinion

Coup > Terrorist.

I don't know if there is a minimum # of participants to constitute a coup attempt but today's gang has nothing in common with the 9/11 hijackers.

This was a failed coup. It pretty much is a textbook definition of it

Definition of coup d'état
: a sudden decisive exercise of force in politics
especially : the violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group

The DoD definition of terrorism has been consistent for as long as I remember, and it doesn't require a bomb. "The calculated use of unlawful violence or threat of unlawful violence to inculcate fear; intended to coerce or to intimidate governments or societies in the pursuit of goals that are generally political, religious, or ideological."

I mean, I could see that stretched to vandalizing an empty building, but vandalism is hard to call violence in and of itself. Some of those folks used violence against the police who were trying to stop them, so for those people I think it could apply.

And DC, please don't play the post provocative things and then say "no, you misinterpreted me" game. I have no patience for line stepping tonight.

I don't like their reasons but storming the capitol is pretty cool, IMO.

I don't cite Noam Chomsky often, but he used that definition to argue the USA commits acts of terrorism quite often.

Early rumors of a pipe bomb found in the Capitol. That would be terrorism.
On the coup side we'll soon find out if any had planned on taking the Capitol before they left on their trip.

It's pretty cool that it illustrates how doable it could be to overthrow a fascist government. The illustration of how doable it could be to subvert our democracy through force, not so cool.

I went to watch Noam Chomsky speak when I was at university. I had no idea who he was at the time (not impressive given I was a politics student). It was during the Gulf War and while I didn’t share his politics then and I don’t know, he was really ****ing impressive and he definitely changed how I looked at the world.
