The most expensive thing I've bought since I got this house was removing a bunch of ****ing diseased elm trees. $7200 to literally ruin my backyard.

**** yes.

Why didn't you just chop them down with a hand axe like a real man?

And then turn the stumps into a sweet dining room table

Took a quick trip to Utah and stopped in Denver...haven't been around there since I was a kid and didn't really remember how breathtaking it could be. GF also really wants to find new horizons so it's a thought we're tossing around, but really no clue where's good etc, so just lots of looking right now

i dig out the root of what i thought was a small tree in the spring. that was a significant mistake. probably took 12 hours total to get most of it out.

burning them out seems less risky.

I've never chased the roots around the yard. Just cutting out the stump is a pita.

After grinding out one stump with a chainsaw, I'm definitely going back to the dynamite method for my future stump removal needs.

i only chased it around the footprint of the branches that stopped grass growth. it was probably an 8' diameter. i actually had a guy chop the stump up with one of those giant chainsaw machine on wheels and he got a lot of the roots too, but they were all over the place as i was leveling the ground.

would love to try it, but i think my neighbors might object. no HOA, but side setbacks are only 10' in my town i believe, and they're generally close to that. probably 50' max between houses

$7200, tho. Lot of things I'd rather do with 7k

But in general I agree, happy to spend money to save myself time.

Lol modern men and power tools. Real mean go rooting with a hoe&mattock, because real senior thought power tools (and obv homemade bombs) are dangerous.

So when I was a kid, we took out a bunch of stumps with dynamite. Most came out with one stick. One big one didn't even move. So my dad tried again with two sticks. It moved a little (apparently enough to break most of its connection with the ground, but not enough to lift it out). So my dad got mad and put 5 sticks under it. It flew up about 20 feet. I thought it was cool, but apparently it wasn't supposed to do that.
