they had a lot more leverage too though. Elway played for the Yankees in a short season A league in 1982, he was drafted in the NFL in 1983. Eli had pedigree in that his father, before Drew Brees came along, was considered the greatest QB in Saints history, and his brother had 4 double digit winning seasons already. idk anything really about Trevor Lawrence, so idk if he thinks he could sit out or force a trade
but look further at the teams involved - how did those trades work out for all teams involved?
the Broncos and Giants, who received the QB, won multiple super bowls each and both QBs were HOF caliber players (albeit Eli to a much much lesser degree than Elway), while the Colts and Chargers didn't play in any SBs while the traded QB was in the league.
granted, the Rivers/Manning trade is much closer in hindsight, as Rivers is probably also a HOF QB.
