My kid just got into the union for computer artists in the movie biz. She worked on 2 different projects prior to trying to gain admission (tick tick boom and time travellers wife). The application/admission process is absolutely brutal. Multiple interviews, portfolio presentations and defenses, project simulations, interview with the board, and finally the waiting period. Her unions application process is every 2 years so this was a very big deal for her to get in with so little time under her belt.

Grats to Squidspawn. I have some friends in that business, though they didn't have any such challenging entry requirements. They kind slid in when it was all new and they were the youngsters who understood computers, instead of relying on wet film and models on strings like the rest of the guys at ILM.

the union pay is nothing short of sick. She got her first gig through a former prof. who rec'd her. The crews tend to stay together from project to project as once a good team is in place it makes everything so much easier. So she got the invite to the second gig cuz of the first. But now she can pretty much write her own ticket wherever and whenever. She is taking the winter off and hanging with me in PC and getting back to her mountain roots. I am now hopeful she can get off the east coast and get back to the western US where everything is a whole lot more kewl.

Thanks for all the kind words guys, I am beyond proud. She got seriously injured skiing when she was 15 and it took until her sophmore year in college where to where she seemed fully recovered. There were several years in there where we were really worried, so this result is kind of like a hallmark movie of the week ending for us.

the worry you feel as a parent when your child is going through major issues is unlikely any other, so I'm really glad for you and her mumma that she's survived and prospered after a load of adversity and hope the journey out from that strengthens her will and resolve.

my middle child has had a horrific 18 months one way or another and the impact it's had on my wife has been remarkable....which then means it's then had a huge impact on me/my marriage and the family. I think my daughter is beginning to come out the other side of it, albeit there are continuing issues, but whether my wife's mindset can recover and whether the psychological damage lingers and becomes an ongoing burden for my girl remain to be seen

I have two friends who got their movie union thing for working a camera a few years ago (something like that, obviously I'm not too knowledgeable on this), and it completely changed their career. I believe it took them over a decade of pretty low pay and poor treatment. If all of the movie industry unions are that way, then Squiddaughter really hit a major milestone.

Set a PR at the gym. The Friday before Thanksgiving I returned to the squat rack. I expected pain when bending down to my shoe rack, but I stopped short; I had left my sneakers in the locker at the gym. I didn't get back to that branch until last night. They were still right there in the locker along my vintage glow in the dark NWO t-shirt
