Two old soccer stories which I'm sure I've posted before (prolly in old chat thread).

Had to go to one of my brother's confirmation (a Catholic church thingy) which was being held at the exact same time of (I believe) the '82 World Cup final. WTF.

Back in the old days most of these games (especially weekday games) weren't broadcast live on the 3 channels I got (2 of which were the same mothercorp station playing pretty much the exact same lineup). They would wait until midnight to show the game. It was pretty easy to go thru the day without finding out the score (lol @ dinosaur times, ldo). But the trickiest thing was not to catch the score on the late night news sports segment, which was always on just prior to the game being started. And I stupidly ruined multiple games for myself accidentally catching the score moments before kickoff.

Just the most glorious tweet from the England Goalkeeper who Maradona scored the ‘hand of God’ goal over in the 86 World Cup

I've read some about the GOAT cricket guy... (without knowing much about cricket) his all sports GOAT case is based on how many standard deviations above what normal production was.

When Ruth came along, he was a similarly dominant outlier. These days his levels of production aren't as uncommon, but they completely changed the game when he played.

Plus 100 years later, he still holds some very meaningful baseball records. Most runs scored in a single season, (which is a big deal across all eras of baseball, including steriods), and highest career slugging pct.

I don't know much about the history of cricket, but I doubt that it's been played at a high level across 6 or 7 generations of professional sports.

why do you suppose baseball has been played for longer at a higher level than cricket?

honestly, Babe Ruth while having a case for the GOAT in his sport isn't even close to the same dominance as Bradman

for Ruth to be as dominant as Bradman, he'd have needed to retire with a batting average over .500 and to have scored over 1000 home runs

average
in test cricket, an exceptional batting average is 50 runs per innings...probably the equivalent of batting .300 for your career.

there have been 6 people in the 150 year history of the sport who have averaged over 60 (and 3 of them are current players playing a game that now far more suits scoring more runs due to technology advances)

the second highest average in history is 63.3. Bradman's average is 99.9.

centuries

scoring over 100 runs in one innings is seen as a significant achievement. it's the closest parallel to a home run, albeit it's more difficult relatively.

in the history of cricket only 26 players have scored over 100 in 15% of their innings, only 3 have scored over 100 in 20% of their innings with the second highest being 24%.

Bradman scored over 100 in 36%

Wilt is probably the closest in American sport, if his scoring and rebounding dominance had continued through his entire career

Ric Flair hands down.

Serena Williams is pretty good at tennis.

Stopped reading at “scored over 1000 home runs”

One doesn’t “score” home runs

Our ethnocentrism is unparalleled. As a 3rd worlder you simply can not comprehend our awesomeness at everything, and the only real sports are baseball, hand egg, and hoop. Everything else is obviously a cheap knockoff.

I don't know anything about lacrosse and only the other Jim Brown? Any stats?

Bolt would need to have run something in the 7 second range.

Bob Beamon or those Chinese women mid and long distance runners were probably the biggest outliers I can remember in track, but obv one was early into EPO and the other was just an incredible one off caused by altitude & variance

actually, maybe Ed Moses is the best example

Serena is an all timer but there’s no clear distance between her and 3 or 4 other players in a goat conversation

7 seconds is a bad take bc humans have limits

Do you realize how much faster 9.58 is than 9.72? I skipped Tyson gay bc he is a ****ing cheat.

Yeah it doesn’t work in a sport like track where it’s not so much skill as human potential.

I actually don’t think there’s been a sub 9.8 by anyone else who hasn’t subsequently been banned for PEDs. Which means that either he’s more incredibly dominant than people realise or that he got the drugs covered up far more efficiently.

I really hope the former and unless they retro test his samples and find something then he’s in the clear now anyway

At least Bolt has a stride and build where I can be tempted to believe his performances were legit.
