TL;DR, Cliff at bottom.
when I was like a freshman or a sophomore in college, i was sitting in my room grinding probably and one of my roommates popped in and was like "yo you want to split a 30 (beer)" and i'm like yeah sure.
i was multi tabling or busy doing whatever i was doing and didn't even look at him during the conversation, but apparently he thought this meant i gave him access to my car to go and buy beer with a fake ID. i just presumed someone else was buying for us and he wanted the $ or something, but he rushed out of the room so i figured he was covering me.
little did i know of course, he was taking my car to store 24 to get a case.
about 1.5-2 hours go by and im like "wtf is this crap" since it was getting late. i look at my phone and right when i do that it starts ringing.
it's my roommate and he's like "yo yo, listen" as i'm about to be like "yo where the **** are you."
he just goes "yo i don't know where your car is but i'm getting arrested i gotta---" then he either hangs up or whatever. i have no idea whats going on. i try to call him back a few times, and at this point i didn't even realize he took my car still so when he said that it was a total WTF moment.
i realize my car is gone and he must have taken it. so i'm stranded in our off campus house with no real clue what's going on other than my roommates are both gone and likely in jail, and nobody knows where my car is.
so i call the PD, and they say that they picked up two kids who bought beer with a fake ID at store 24, and got caught because they were walking around the parking lot in a confused state and the cops thought maybe they were drunk. carded them and it's a done deal. i ask if they know anything about the car they took, and the cop was like "your drunk friends lost it."
so i had to convince the cop that they weren't drunk and to see if he can ask them about it. cop is generally rude and not having it, and eventually ends the conversation.
so i'm sitting in my room tilted as hell being like what the **** is going on feeling like im in bizarro world.
about three hours later (like 1am), another cop calls me and is like "are you the owner of a 98 nissan blah blah." i'm like "yeah! where is it!" and he's like listen you need to come down to the station. i'm like yo i don't have a ****ing car dip**** and he's like ok we'll send someone to pick you up.
about 1 hour and 45 minutes later (what the ****?) a guy starts pounding on my door and we go down to the station.
they sit me down like murder interrogator style and are like "so what were your friends really doing when you gave them your keys"
and i'm like what the **** are you talking about, did you find my car or what?
they keep grilling me acting like i know more than i do, and it was pretty relentless. it was ****ing crazy new hampshire nonsense, they concocted this whole story trying to act like i was some international drug smuggler sending my friends on stealth missions but my friends are obv drunk college kids who ****ed it up.
after about an hour or two of this nonsense they finally cave and decide to believe me that i didnt know what happened. i told them all the honest truth, that my friend took my car without asking to buy beer with fake id, and that i knew we were getting beer but not that he was taking my car or even using the fake.
so it turns out, some clown stole the car and probably went on a joyride or something cause it was found unharmed with everything still in it about 20 miles into maine from the NH/ME border.
The cops however still weren't totally buying the story and apparently as part of "standard practice" the car was kept as evidence of a possible crime scene for i want to say 90 days?
I had a real job back then and had to get rides or borrow cars for three months straight.
Pretty sick beat.
Like two years later they busted some serial car thief who was stealing cars like mine frequently from the U too, and he was from Maine, so I'm guessing its the same dude.
Cliff:
Roommate inadvertently steals my car, gets detained, car is property of New Hampshire for 90 days.
