My current perception of Live Games vs Online Games My current perception of Live Games vs Online Games

I am a winning (25nl) online player over a 500k+ sample size, making a slow transition to live game. Currently, I have played more than 150 hours of live games. I struggled to adjust initially, making a few bad plays (mostly bluffs that went very wrong). However, I am coping well now, and I am pretty sure I am currently crushing the game.

Here's my current evaluation of Live poker dynamics and player's type.

1) Generally, the play is very passive. Limpings, over calling, check calling etc are the "norms".

2) 3/4 bets are almost exclusively KK or AA.

3) Raises are normally nutty types of hands, especially river raises. Well, 25NL river raises are usually strong hands too but in live poker, it is very rare to see people trying to raise river as bluff.

4) Most players fail to understand the difference between "relative bet size" and "absolute bet size". For example, at river in a $5/$10 game, pot is $600. Most players regards a $200 bet into this pot as a large bet sizing when it is actually not.

5) Most players do not understand the meaning of absolute hand strength.

For example, Player A had bottom two pairs on the board 4569A in 6 way pot. Player A cbet flop, cbet turn and face a river shove. Almost no one (at least in my casino) have shown me that they are capable of folding this type of two pair hands. Not only that, most players would almost always take the bet/bet/bet line with disregard of the calling range of the other players.

6) Players tend to over generalize "players' types". For example, anytime you show them that you have the tendencies to fire double or triple barrel bluff, they would almost instantaneously tag you as a "bluffer" and will always call you very light in the future.

To these players, they always associate betting with "having a hand" and checking as "not having a hand", which seriously is a big big leak imo.

7) Players like to play in multiway pots with hands that are likely to be dominated. Eg., Kx suited types of hands, Ax, suited gappers etc. They simply arent good enough to recognize that it is -ev for them to play these hands.

8) Players are generally passive with draws. They play to hit monsters and they do not play their hand such that it give them positive expectations.

9) Most players (barring those online wizards) are idiots with regards to the Mathematical aspect of poker. Once, I shove AJ on a 782 flop and an old man told me that I was very daring to shove with no pair. I said I was ahead of you (he had 99) which he immediately replied, "In what sense".

to sum it up, live players are generally worse and less agressive than online

I'm not sure about low limit online, but pretty much everything you described is very accurate for 5/5 and below. It starts to get a bit better at 5/10+.

Nice write up and all, but I am not sure where you are trying to go with this. As it stands right now the most likely course it will take is an online v live thread where people debate where the better players are, etc.
