If you want to lose weight, I would recommend intermittent fasting (IF). I'm in pretty good shape and on the toned side. 5'10" 180 with about 42 inch chest and 32 inch waist. I went without working out for a month and still intermittent fasted 6 days of the week and went from 185 to 180 and I can see the fat I do have on my stomach shrinking. It will be uncomfortable the first couple days maybe, but always good to get out of your comfort zone.
Here's what my diet looks like that is giving me good results.
So, the fasting approach I take is only eating in an 8 hour window every day and fasting the other 16 (with the exception of a banana and coffee in the morning).
First meal is at 2PM, this is my biggest meal of the day and I keep it healthy. Mostly no bread ever, sometimes I get a greek chicken sandwich on pita bread but most of the time no bread and mostly meat/salads. Sometimes I eat chicken, rice and bean burrito that are similar to chipotle style.
[If I am working out I eat a snack before the gym when I get home at around 6PM
I get home around 9PM from working out. Steak and eggs for my last meal, finished before 10PM rinse and repeat. In bed by about 12AM]
If not working out, I have a protein bar or shake around 6-7 PM and a healthy snack before 10PM.
Sunday's I treat myself and don't fast. The other 6 days, I stick to that schedule, eat my first real meal around 2PM. In the morning I have a coffee with a little half and half (no sugar) and a banana.
There have been a lot of studies done about the benefits of fasting. It really helps our brains fire on all cylinders. I notice, as soon as I eat a meal I slow down.
I notice too, whenever I eat something unhealthy like McDonalds here and there or even a burger from In'N'Out sometimes, my body shouts at me and my stomach feels uneasy.
I took a nutrition course in college that taught me how bad all bread and carbs (except fruits and vegetables) are for us. And actually wheat bread is even worse for us than white. This is because wheat bread has a protein in it called lectin that our guts cannot digest (see leaky gut). Animals have the same problem. This is why people try to get grass fed meat. The quality of meat is so much better when the animal is eating grass instead of grains that messes up their guts. Interesting stuff IMO. Contrary to what the government is trying to tell everybody, whole grains are actually one of the worst things we can continually subject our bodies to.
Before I took the course, I used to eat tuna sandwiches / PB&J sandwiches on whole grain bread. I often felt my stomach feeling very uneasy after.
Our bodies are our temples.
