Did some quick searching now at expedia.com for prices at for example Linq and Harrahs wich are double the price that Strat charge, and on top of that we get 3 nights for free. The price differences is huge imo.
You do need to tell us what you intend to do in the desert so we can give helpful advice. "I want to play WSOP events" is a lot different than "I want to do a pub crawl." I've stayed in like ten different places.

otherwise

There are no bad strip hotels, just different was of being good.

There's one called The Royal Resort which may be a plausible walk from the W.

I got a great deal at the Hard Rock last year, it was fine as long as you were far away from the pool.

The Gold Coast is fine if you want to play at the Rio but want slightly cheaper room.

Why not use the web to look around Koval Ln and Paradise Rd?
Hooters is fine if you don't mind being in the South Strip.

We just want to get the flights/hotels as cheap as possible= more money for poker. We are looking to maybe fire some tourney bullets in the 500$-1500$ area if we can get the opportunity moneywise to do it, so every dollar counts. At the same time we dont want to live in horrible places with shabby rooms, unstable wifi connections and that kind of stuff.

Hard rock is a decent alternative for sure, i know friends who had stayed there who was very pleased with it- and same as the Stratosphere its great value for money with cheap roomrates plus beastmode poolarea.

I would love to live on the strip, however i dont think its worth it if i have to pay double the rates compared to Stratosphere.

I can show you my roulette system. This way you can pay for your trip in one spin and have more money for poker.

Okay, the most important thing to do is make a reservation NOW with a free cancellation policy. I did it at the Silverton.

Then you and your friend take turns over the next few months checking Vegas.com and Priceline.com etc for deals. Have an idea what you would be willing to pay for a small upgrade in quality. IF you see something great, book it and cancel the old reservation.

Since you are coming to vegas with mercenary intent, ignore hotel luxuries and amenities that you will never use.

In addition to the already mentioned names, look at:

Linq
Ameristar
La Quinta Inn
Orleans
Ballys

I have no skin in this game but need to factor in how many extra cabs per day are you and your buddy gonna take and what is that cost? Together and separate

Then what is the opportunity cost of the time spent queueing for the cabs and being in the cabs and finally how much is it worth to you if being on a strip location being around all the noise and excitement etc?

Not much at all in cabs and potenally Uber. Lets say 15$ pr day for each of us if we only take cabs, less if we can use Uber. (1 trip pr day, 15 bucks each way)

As far as i remember the other hotels also charge extra pr day for using wifi, wich is included in the room at the Stratosphere for free. Also the resort fee seems to be bigger at the strip hotels compared to the Strat.

I am open for living somewhere else closer to the strip for conveninent reasons mostly- but i need some incentive to do so= whats in it for me? Because moneywise or when it comes down to getting a decent hotel for the smallest amount of money total added up it seems to me that nobody else can compete with the Strat.

Being close to the strip/living on the strip due to being close the the noise, clubs and that kind of stuff have pretty much zero value for us. Both of us are going on a dedicated pokertrip, we are basically gonna live at the tables- thats pretty much all we care for. My buddy played for 25 hour straight one session when he visited Vegas last time in November, and at my last trip i had an average of like 12 hours of poker every day. Brag asides: we are both beasts when it comes to volume Feely, we basically never gets enough

it is a pain in the ass to get to any where from there

these are the top 3 reasons why people do not like it
TBC plays there tho so it must be good.

IMO, if i have to use 300-400$ more for hotel expenses just to live on the strip, i would rather use that money as a bullet in a WSOP sideevent as an example.

This thread is everything I hoped it would be

Gil-read Feelers post. If the items he details are not worth it to you then you have basically answered your question and the Strat is probably the best bet for you

Imo, you are greatly underestimating having a sizeable poker room within a few minutes walk of your room.

If this will be a dedicated poker trip, then try to stay at the hotels closest to the rooms you will hit the most.

Harrahs, Linq, V... That's what u should be focused on.

I just did som research as i mentioned earlier Lapi and Harrahs have almost double the roomrates compared to Strat. Wifi we have to pay extra pr day instead of free and approx 15$ pr night in higher resort fee. I just cant justify that.

wp Zoltan, love the second one

pokero, you lured me into checking that hotel out. $372 for an 8 night stay but yikes, not sure I'd want to be leaving my bankroll and passport in there/come home drunk late at night
