Limping range? Limping range?

03-15-2015 , 02:54 AM
I'm mostly an online player. Have taken 2.5k from bankroll to play 2/4 live. Have been very tight/solid and built the bankroll up to around 5k. Very, very, very early days still.

Online 6-max I know ranges pretty well. I have stats etc. Not a lot of limping so I know what to do when folded to me in each position, ie, raise on the btn with T8s when folded to me. Also pots usually heads up so I know how important it is to have the lead and position for fold equity (more fold equity in HU pots then multiway)

The biggest problem for me, live, is knowing how to play in limped pots preflop. KJo in MP when everyone before has limped?
I havent faced these problems often online. (So far I've been opting to just fold, and generally playing VERY tight)

My Question:

2/4 typical game
You're 1 from the c/o. 3 limpers before you. What is your limp-along range. What is your raising range. Same for Late position.

(I don't feel I'm ever "priced in" preflop with hands that can make decisions difficult and lose a ton in big multiway pots like kj, 96s etc)

(I have tried forever to find something in the forums to help me out but with no luck, I'm sorry if this question has been posted and answered before)

Biggest problem with some of the online players is that they're "sandboxed" into approaching the game a certain way, making it almost mechanical.

And once they're taken out of that box and out of comfort zone, they lose control of how to think about a hand.

Here's a thought, perhaps you never really knew how to think about ranges and was simply following a script that is no different than "don't play 72o."

So maybe start doing some fundamental work in hand reading and quit trying to recreate the online script?

I agree with most of what you're saying. I understand that online vs live play is totally different. Things that work online are absolutely spewtastic live, and probably vice versa.
I believe I have a good understanding of online play but still grasping live play, and I'm just looking for some thoughts.

You're right, I am out of my comfort zone here by far. In limped pots preflop. online 6-max is totally different to live full ring. I don't even come close to approaching the games the same way, other then to try and make the best decisions with the information I have.

All I'm doing is looking for some initial guidance to get me going.

Welcome to the forum, OP.

While LLSNL is an introductory forum, there are some basics that are assumed you already understand before you ask questions. On of the biggest is a starting hand guide. That is a question that is more suited for the Beginner's Question forum. Therefore, I'm going to lock this thread.

As Shell Gas hinted, you're asking the wrong question anyway. The answer will depend on the villains and your plans post flop. You should start off by asking, "Why do I want to limp instead of raising or folding in this particular situation?" You'll need to answer those questions because unlike on-line, the rake is far higher live. If you aren't exploiting your villains' weakness to a far greater extent than is done on-line, you'll be a losing player.
