Well, but if you are looking to determine whether you are putting in the correct percentage of money vs. your equity, then you want to do it as a factor of the whole pot.
For example, Kolb's call is approx 41% of the whole pot (including his call), so as long as he has at least 41% equity, the call is a push.
It's really just a different way to express the same thing, instead of converting your equity into pot odds and then comparing to your pot odds, you are figuring what percentage of money you are putting in, then comparing that to your equity percentage.
*Truthfully, I just find it easier to do it this way sometimes, although either way is correct.
