Its all mental. Look at the people and how they play. You get used to it after a while.

This is why its important to follow all the hands even when you fold pre.

It's unrealistic for most people to do so much math in their heads and remember it for so long. Just watch folks tendencies and put them into categories, then as you watch their play you can see how their individual actions fit the archetype, and adjust your read accordingly.

People either bet too much, call too much, or fold too much. Just figure out who's who and it's pretty much a game of rock/paper/scissors.

Thanks for reply - really appreciate it.

Paying attention when not in hand and considering strategies to beat different types of players has improved my game massively.

Feel stupid that I was previously playing the same way regardless of the type of player.

Had a great session the other night, correctly folding top pair on flop twice against action from certain players.

Online game improved also by pulling out different plays for different types of players.

Have copy and pasted the above to my study papers for quick reading before playing Live

Don't try to keep a precise VPIP/3bet%/etc. for other players unless you're Rain Man. Usually the opponent (or you) will leave before you have enough hands to nail stats down with much accuracy, and you're not going to keep perfect tallies anyway. Much more important is being able to identify large deviations quickly, e.g. noticing that someone limped 4 hands in a row after you sat down. As SpexDome suggested, identify the nits, stations, and maniacs as soon as you can, and then hone your reads from there as you go.

Watch some Live At The Bike episodes. The anouncers talk about it, that they know the stats exactly but the players should have a sense of it. And usually in the last half hour they'll show the VPIP and PRF #s so you can check yourself.

It is pretty straight forward. Someone playing 1 hand or less and orbit is a tight player. Someone playing 3 or more hands per table is loose. Someone raising much more than calling pf is so rare that you should notice it quickly.

If you see someone playing about 2 hands per orbit, raising when opening and mostly calling only in LP after a raise, move to another table. They probably know what they or doing.
