1/3 NLHE, 9 handed.

V1 - 1200$ BTN. Solid TAG regular that plays a disciplined game and is friends with a lot of people in the room, came over to our table and I made some jokes and poked some fun at him for leaving the other table (where all the good TAG and LAGs are) to which he got uncharacteristically upset. Not sure if he's been losing. He's folded every hand since he came over except one where he showed down QJss after opening UTG+1. So he's not a NIT but he's not super loose.

V2 - 760$ BB. Have never seen him before, loose passive losing player that stacked three people on a K T 6 5 board when he had 7 4 (and led the betting putting stacks in OTT) and the river was a 3 but somehow no one had a . Only played with him an hour or so but he's VPIPing around 30%. Every action he's taken has been to x/call other than the above HH.

Hero - Covers UTG. V1's image of Hero is that Hero is tight, not sure what else he thinks of me. Weeks ago I fast played JTs OOP against him and he folded AJ on a J-high board, another player was in and I rivered a T for two-pair and took it down and he couldn't believe I had been so wide.

---

Hero sees A A and opens to 10, folds to V1 who raises to 25, SB folds, V2 calls, Hero re-raises to 100 (?).

First question I have is would you ever flat here? What if BB hadn't called would you ever flat against the described V1? I feel like 4-bets are so face up at this game and I know deeper you can flat big hands like this more so that's why I ask.

V1 folds, V2 calls, HU IP.

Flop 225 - 6 6 3

V2 checks, hero bets 75, V2 calls.

Turn 375 - 7

V2 checks, Hero?, V2 has 585 back.

Where are you playing that a $10 open gets you heads up in a 1/3 game? If I play for 8 hours I can count on one hand the number of times someone opens for $10 or under and it goes heads up or taken down. What I’ve noticed is that most people don’t pay attention between $10 or $15. Anything they call for $10 they are calling for $15. Anything they call for $10 they will call 80% for $20. Anything they call for $10 they will call 50% for $25. Sounds like you are ultra deep for 1/3, start sizing up to 5x minimum if your range is that much better than the people you play against. As tight as you always say you are, it should be.

Id bet $145 looking to get stacks in on the river. Preflop makes this look like he has a lot of overpairs also, which from the HH he is not releasing. But if you had made it $15 or more to go off the bat, and he still 3b you can be a lot more confident about what you are up against.

Never ever flatting pre no matter what. Not this deep in these positions. 4bet is fine, can even go bigger to like $125 imo. The 3 bet was small, you are deep. And you are OOP to the 3bettor. 4x 4 bet when mega deep without cold caller is reasonable to me, so 5x with cold caller is also reasonable.

Flop is fine. Turn ~175 - 200 and jam river.

He called 100 pre, he should have a lot of med/big PP's, why so small otf? I would be betting around 125, then it would be around a PSB ott to gii while he's committed.

When ranges are this narrow, I’m actually sizing UP on my flop bet, even on a dry board, to put his TT-KK in the worst spot possible. (Rather than betting small to target his Ace-high hands, since he should not have many of them with this action and our blockers.) We’d really hate to let him off the hook light if the Turn is an over to his pair.

But anyway, as played, bet 180 on turn to set up the River jam.

Okay yea I knew my sizings were a little weird. Once he called the 100 pre and then the 75 I felt like its 88-JJ so often. This guy I figured had to be sticky and I thought any further betting would commit me as any reasonable bet would be 150+ and he'd have like 400 and change left and the pot would be over 500.

Result:
Spoiler:
V checks turn, Hero overbet jams, V tank folds saying "I hit but I'll let you have it"

I think this sizing is a mistake. 33%, 50%, 67%, 75% pot, anything is better than this overbet jam. Now you are likely folding out many of the pocket pairs you want to get value from. Like, if ever there was a time to hero fold queens, it would be when you overbet jam turn.

I know it's tempting to represent a polar range when the flush draw comes out, but the reality is, the core of your range is 6 combos of AA, 6 combos of KK. You can have AdKd, and then partials of AdQd, KdQd, Ad5d, Ad4d, tiny bits of hands like KdTd. If you add those all up, maybe it amounts to 3 combos of flush draws, and your opponent isn't even going to give you credit for most of them anyways. You're really selling the story that you are sometimes going to jam a hand like AK without a flush draw on the turn sometimes to balance out value jams, and I don't think people will buy it. They will assume you line is underbluffed and they will fold a ton.

It also might be tempting to put max pressure on villain's draws, but the reality is that villain does not have many draws. We can't be too scared about pricing in a hand like AdKd to call, allowing us to get another value street. Maybe a small bet induces a jam from diamonds on the turn even. But at the end of the day, most of his range is going to be pocket pairs and hands like AK that floated flop, most of which did not pick up diamonds on the turn.

4bet pots are one of least frequently played pots in live poker, but they have a disproportional impact on the game. My beat advice is to use an app like GTO Wizard or Postflop+ to study 4bet pots to get the feel for them.

Preflop 4bet sizing is fine. The ideal scenario is that button folds and the fish in the blinds calls (which is of course what happened). With AA you can be somewhat relaxed about things going 3-way or being OOP, you still have AA.

You've ended up in the middle. Either you want this to be a 2 street game, in which case size up, maybe 150-170 which gives just under a pot sized bet left on the turn; or a 3 street game, in which case make your turn bet about 150-170 on the turn for a gentle river jam.

man worst possible choice by far imo

your logic made sense. if you bet 150 you will set up a less than pot sized jam otr and price him into calling (i think a slightly bigger bet is better as hes probably inelastic as long as you dont do something silly like bet 1/10 or all in), but then your conclusion was to reject that and just jam 1.6x pot lol. the type of guy that calls an overbet ott is still going to call down vs normal sized bets

if you wanted to do this for some reason (not sure why you need to force the money in on 663r but sure) size up otf
